There is a Uriah Brown listed as living with Allen and Elizabeth Weeks next door to a Redmond Brown in the 1850 census. I believe that he was their father. Redmond was my gg-grandfather which would make Uriah Brown the ggg. If you have found out anything on him or his parentage, I would love to know about it. He continued to lived with Elizabeth Brown through the 1870 census and then probably died before the next one. He was 75 in that one. 3. NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM the "ABBEVILLE PRESS and BANNER", Abbeville, South Carolina for NOVEMBER 1869, and DECEMBER 1869 NEWSPAPER Issue of NOVEMBER 12, 1869 OBITUARY OF SALLIE MARGARET NORWOOD "Cometh Up as a Flower" The angels have another sister in their midst; Sallie Margaret, the youngest daughter of Dr. W.C. NORWOOD of Cokesbury, S.C. died October 20, 1869. During her severe illness she exhibited many lovely traits of character, together with the more spiritual graces of the Christian. Her protracted sufferings extorted moans, but no murmur. No word escaped her lips expressing distrust of God or opposition to His will. She suffered meekly, believing that the Divine Father is "too wise to err, too good to be unkind." "Pray", she said repeatedly to her sister, "pray to God to let me live for those I love and to glorify him by a christian life, it it is His will; if not, to make me resigned and happy in His love." There was much around her to make life here very sweet. Having completed her education in Baltimore, she hurried home last June to be present at the death bed of her father. That father still lives, and on the day of her burial, kissed her cold brow, bidding adieu to his darling child with the words, "dutiful and beloved daughter." An elder sister was to her both mother and sister. Oh, how constantly, tenderly she nursed the suffering one. And there was one who loved her with all the strength of a true manly heart, and who had won her love. After a long engagement of more than a year, they felt that their nupitals would unite "two souls without a single thought, two hearts that beat as one." The 13th of October was the day appointed for the marriage of Miss Norwood to Dr. James F. FURMAN. That day found her extremely ill of typhoid fever. Death, the messenger of the Lord, touched the frail human flower, so loving and beloved, and she ceased to suffer and began to live. When dying, she strove to comfort her father, saying how much better it was to have children with the angels in Heaven, than dwelling on earth. Trusting in Jesus, she was willing to die. She is as she believed she would be, with the angels now. Her form glows neath the jasper light and soft her feet are treading with bliss, the gleaning golden street with the angels now. ---------- STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, Abbeville County Probate Court Whereas, George W. David Greer was endowed in a large degree with all the ordinary virtues that adorn humanity. As a farmer, he was thrifty, frugal and economical. As a neighbor he was kind, generous and social. In domestic enjoyment he was happy and cheerful and a good provider. As a citizen, he always took a deep interest in public affairs. As a Christian, he was sincere, humble and consistent in his walk. He was during his whole Christian life, a member of the Baker's Creek Baptist church where he had his first and last connection. He was an affectionate husband, a fond father and a kind master, as the staying of his freedman with him, fully proves. They had both been engaged with a number of others in pulling fodder and when about to return home, Evans was requested by another to bring his gun which he had forgotton; and in drawing it though the bushes, he accidentally discharged it, and deposited the contents into the head of the deceased, who was standing some twelve paces distant. The Jury of Inquest found a verdict in accordance with the above stated facts. --------- SAD ACCIDENT We regret to announce the sad accident on Monday evening last, which resulted in the death of a young man, Mr. Richard TAYLOR, who lives in the upper part of the district. Soon after leaving the village he was thrown from his horse and falling upon his head received such injuries as to be entirely insensible. He was immediately removed to the Marshall House and was given all that medical skill could render, but to no avail. He lingered until Wednesday evening when he died. He was under age and unmarried and leaves a mother and brothers and sisters to mourn his loss. -------- OBITUARY OF ANNIE BAKER DIed, Sept. 23, 1869 of Typhoid Fever at the residence of her father-in-law near Lowndesville, S.C., Annie, wife of Albert T. BAKER and daughter of Esan and Delphia BROOKS. She was born in Edgefield county, on Dec. 16, 1846. She early felt there was a void in her heart nothing earthly could fill, and wisely she sought and found in God, the rest her soul desired and made a covenant by sacrifice with God and joined the Baptist church and consecrated her life to His service. During her short illness she often expressed her entire resignation to the will of God and with joy would exclaim, "Bless the Lord, oh, my soul". It is sad to know that one so loved in the associations in life, one, who gave so much of sunshine to her own family circle, has been taken away by death. On earth, her soul was but in the bud. She went to a fairer clime, that she might blossom. She leaves a devoted husband, an infant child, an aged mother, kind brothers and sisters and many friends to mourn her loss, which to her, is eternal gain. --------- BY ORDER OF THE PROBATE COURT, Abbeville County I will sell at public auction on Sale Day in November next, the real estate of Josiah ASHLEY, dec'd, comprising eighty-one acres, more or less, situated in said county, ajdoining lands of Joshua ASHLEY and John T. DONNALD in Williamston, S.C. on the 14th of February 1869, in the 45th year of her age, Mrs. Margaret DONNALD, wife of William DONNALD of Abbeville district. The subject of this notice embraced religion and united herself with the Baptist church when only nine years old, and for thirty-six years, was a living illustration of the trust of those scriptures which declare" they that seek me early shall find me" and "suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of Heaven." Mrs. Donnald died as she lived, a true, consistent Christian. Perfectly resigned to the will of God. "To live with Christ, to die was gain" she repeatedly expressed to sorrowing friends, her willingness to depart and be with that Savior who had been to her, for so many years, a hiding place from the wind, and a cover from the tempest, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Conscious of the approaching end, she bade farewell to her husband, relatives and friends and breathed her life away in earnest prayer, that they all should meet her in Heaven. May God hear and answer that prayer. ---------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, JULY 16, 1869 MARRIAGE AFTER THIRTY-THREE YEAR ENGAGEMENT On Sunday last, Miss Matilda GRIFFITH, who has long been a respected resident of Greenville, and Mr. John GRANT Of Ireland, were married at the residence of the former by Rev. E.T. Buist. The Greensville, S.C. Enterprise says: The incident is a pleasing one; a romantic history attaches. Thirty-three years have fled since the parties became engaged, nor have they seen each other in that time and during a long portion of it, were ignorant of each other's whereabouts. They were both attached, when mere children in their native Ireland; but when the engagement became known, the families of both were opposed to it from opposive religious views and the family of Miss Griffith, contrived to send her against her will to the United States. Mr. Grant, all disconsolate, enlisted in the British Army, not being aware of first whither the lady had gone. His career as a soldier continued twenty-six years; in the meanwhile, he fought through the terrible Sepoy rebellion in India, making as many hair-breadth escapes in the imminent deadly beaches of Othello. He returned to England some three or four years ago and having in the meantime had some correspondence with the lady by letter, for his devotion never faltered, he sailed for this country. She was on her voyage at the same time to old Ireland, and the ships passed each other. He found his way to the great West, and having been prostrated by cholera, and losing the means brought with him, he went to Montana. Last Friday he arrived by the cars in Greenville, suddenly and unheralded and sought the house of Miss Griffith, who knew him instantly on sight, but he did not recognize her in the same manner, for she had changed from a fragile girl to the mature woman. Of course she was agitated and overjoyed as he was, and there being no longer any impediment, an immediate marriage was determined on. The result was their union on Sunday, as before stated. " --------- MARRIAGES Married on the 11th inst. by the Rev. W.P. DuBose, Mr. Nelson T. SASSARD to Miss Maggie SMALL, both of Abbeville, S.C. ------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, AUGUST 6, 1869 STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, Abbeville County Probate Court Whereas, James A. CORLEY has made application for Letters of Administration on the estate and affects of Emily ISOM, dec'd, late of said county. This is therefore to cite all kindred and creditors of said deceased to appear in the Court of Probate on August 20th next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, to show cause, if any, why the said Administration should not be granted. This 2nd day of August, 1869. Wm. Hill, Judge of Probate ---------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, AUGUST 13, 1869 TRAGEDY IN EDGEFIELD; TWO MEN AMBUSHED; One of them Killed, the other seriously wounded Yesterday evening we were informed by a gentleman from the Edgefield Court House that the CRESWELL difficulty had culminated in a fearful tragedy. As our readers are all aware of the nature of the affair out of which the difficulty between the ADDISON family and Mr. J. D. CRESWELL arose, we will not allude to it in this connection; but merely give the history of the recent tragedy as given to us by our informant. Last Wednesday afternoon, Mr. J. D. CRESWELL and an older brother Mr. Charles CRESWELL, left this city in a buggy to return to their homes near Ninety-Six, South Carolina. Late on the evening of that day the two brothers reached Edgefield Court House and stopped for the night at the village tavern. Yesterday morning, between eight and nine o'clock, the Creswells again started on their journey, taking with them a sixteen- shooter Winchester rifle, as if anticipating trouble. They had not been gone long when some one came into town and said that the two men had been murdered. A party immediately went out to ascertain if the rumor was correct. A mile and a half from Edgefield, on the road to Ninety-Six, the bodies of the CRESWELLS were found. The older, Charles CRESWELL, was nearly dead; the body being almost riddled with buckshot. J. D. CRESWELL was seriouly, if not fatally, wounded. One hand was pierced by two balls, the other hand by one; the chin was also struck; one ball entered the side, another the stomach. The latter is reported to have said that two men concealed by the wayside fired simultaneously as they saw the buggy, afterward making their escape. He identified one of the parties as George ADDISON Jr., a brother of the young lady of the affair. The wounded Creswell is now an inmate of a private home in Edgefield. No arrests have yet been made. -------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, AUGUST 20, 1869 STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, Abbeville District Probate Court Whereas, Geo. W. RICHEY has made application to grant him Letters of Administration of the estate and effects of Mrs. Elizabeth RICHEY, late of said county, deceased. This is therefore to cite all the kindred and creditors of said dec'd to appear in the Court of Probate on the 3rd day of Sept. next to show cause, if any they have, why said Administration should not be granted. This 18th day of August 1869. Wm. Hill, Judge of Probate ----------- THE EDGEFIELD TRAGEDY The Edgefield Advertiser gives the following particulars of the shooting of Charles and J.D. CRESWELL at Pottersville: "At old Pottersville, one mile north of town, on Thursday morning last, was enacted one of the most horrible tragedies the pen was ever called upon to relate. On that morning, after usual breakfast time, two brothers, Charles and J.D. CRESWELL, well known citizens of the Ninety-Six section, left the village journeying homewards. They had spent the night at Glover Hotel on their way from Augusta. They traveled in a buggy drawn by horses. On the morning in question, J.D. CRESWELL, the younger of the brothers, was driving. As they neared the foot of the hill upon which stand the residences of Mr. A. RAMSEY and Dr. H. PARKER, they were fired upon from the corn field on their right, a very short distance below Mr. Ramsey's house. At this point, very near the corner of the field, there stands a small plum thicket. Out of this thicket came the shots. Charles Creswell received some four shots in his right breast and lived not more than an hour. J.D. Creswell was wounded in five places, the right hand, left arm, chin, breast and stomach. The horses continued to go forward, but at Dr. Parker's gate, about two hundred yards from the scene of the shooting, the latter though severely wounded, succeeded in stopping them. Here Charles Creswell fell from the buggy, the wheels of which ran over him, and J.D. Creswell, calling for assistance, had him removed into the house where he lived for upwards of an hour. In connection with the circumstances which led to this terrible tragedy, the public mind of our community has been previously sadly and painfully moved, and when the late occurence was made known, it led to such a day of horrified yet undemonstrative excitement as we have never known in Edgefield. In the afternoon, a coroner's inquest was held over the body of Charles Creswell, the jury returning the verdict that he came to his death from gun shot wounds at the hand of some person or persons unknown. On the following day, the remains, attended by friends who had been speedily summoned, were conveyed to the home of the departed man's parents. J.D. Creswell, whose wounds were at first thought to be mortal, after remaining two nights at Dr. Parker's, was removed to the Glover Hotel in this place, where he now lies, attended by his father, mother and two sisters. His wounds, though very serious and painful are not considered to be mortal and well grounded hopes are entertained for his recovery. The parties who fired these fatal shots are George B. and James ADDISON, sons of our old and honored fellow citizen, Major George A. ADDISON. A few hours after the shooting, they rode quietly into town, and after the coroner's inquest had been made and known, surrendered themselves to Sheriff McDevitt. On the following morning, attended by a legal adviser, they left for Lexington, to obtain bail from Judge Boozer of that place. On Saturday afternoon they returned, having, without the slightest difficulty, accomplished their object. Since then, they have gone to their homes. George B. ADDISON is a young man of some twenty-three or four years. James ADDISON is a youth not yet eighteen. They have been raised in our midst, where, with their families, they have been loved and honored. To see them thus, was and is, to our community, a cause of deepest and most painful sadness. --------------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, AUGUST 27, 1869 HOMICIDE We regret to learn that a negro named Bob Richardson was killed last Monday night in the lower part of the district, by a party of men disguised, who called him to the door and then shot him. No clue has yet been found to the perpetrators. We cannot too earnestly denounce the act of these lawless desperadoes who bring discredit upon the fair name of our district. We trust that they may be brought to deserved punishment and thus relieve us from a portion of the odium which attaches to the innocent. -------

    3. Yes, Jimmy's site was responsible for me finding my ROSAMOND cousins. On this page, http://www.gencircles.com/users/jdrosamond/1/data/1536 I found my g grandfather Benjamin Augustus "Gus" and his brother Joseph. The descendants of Joseph and I traded pictures and info. The real surprise was they had an email address from two of my DUKE cousins. Can you say "dancing the genealogy dance"? To find clues, documentation and 2 different lines in the same series of emails, I hit the jack pot. I've had the pleasure of meeting one of my DUKE cousins (we went to Harris County, GA to the courthouse looking for clues) and look forward to the time I can meet my ROSAMOND cousins. kemis Have you been to this site? http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosamondgenealogy/index2.htm 1. His parents were Ed and Matilda Richey he was born in 1870 and to the best of my knowledge their only child, but I have seen other Richey families in Abbeville on the census rolls and many of the families intermarried. Onie's daughter Daisy who was from a previous relationship, married William Wesley Crawford. What I do know is that the Crawford family keeps very good records and has a reunion every year. Doria Crawford Johnson has made extensive research on this family and you can go to this link to find out some of the information she has and how to reach her. http://www.afrigeneas.com/preciousphotos/photo231.htm Alice Fluegge Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My notes: This is Sterling FREEMAN. Also, commonly seen written as Starling or S. S. Freeman. (b1801-d1901). Betty was his 2nd wife (b1848-d1901+). His brother, Charles FREEMAN, was my GGG-Grandfather (1807-1871). H/O 1)Cynthia Harmon (1809-1866). Sterling is buried in the old Newby Cemetery near McCormick. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dilbert53 Surnames: Evans, Bishop, Cloninger, Branham, Torrence Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.abbeville/2325/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for information about the Thomas Evans (a teacher age 32), Oliver (age 6), and Daniel W (age 3) who are listed in the household of James Evens in the 1850 census for Abbeville, South Carolina. I'm trying to find out if the above Thomas Evans and Daniel W. Evans are the same people as my great grandfather Daniel W. Evans and great, great grandfather Thomas G. Evans. My Daniel W. Evans was born 3 April 1847, which makes him the same age as the Daniel listed in the James Evens household. Some records show my Daniel was born in Shelby County, Alabama, but other records show he was born in South Carolina. According to Daniel's death certificate, his mother was Mary Rountree. I don't have any more information on Mary Rountree. My Daniel's father was Thomas G. Evans. Everything I've seen about Thomas indicates he was born in South Carolina. I don't have a birth date, but I'm guessing he was born around 1820. My theory is that Thomas Evans and Mary Rountree were married in South Carolina, perhaps Abbeville County, and had two children, Oliver and Daniel. Mary died after Daniel was born and before the 1850 census. It appears that Thomas and Daniel moved to Shelby County, Alabama, but I don't know when. Thomas and Daniel appear in the 1860 Shelby County, Alabama, census. Thomas is listed (as "T.J.") with his wife, Johannah. (Thomas and Johanna, or Joanah, were married 3 March 1858 in Columbiana, Alabama.) I don't know what happened to Oliver, except it's possible that he also moved to Shelby County and is the Oliver Evans who lived next door to Thomas and Joanah in the 1860 census. So, if you have any information about Thomas Evans, Oliver, or Daniel OR Mary Rountree, please contact me. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
