Can someone tell me if and how I can access copies of the "Edgefield Advertiser" c.1841, or is there someone out there who has access and can do a search for me? ---Randall Buchanan (kilt2000@netdoor.com)
I keep seeing your posting, and I have wanted to ask, are you kin to Roy, the famous guitar played from Va.? It was a shame that he died, or was killed back in 1988 while in police custody. Great guitar player, one of the best. NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ABBEVILLE BANNER", Abbeville, South Carolina for NOVEMBER 1847 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, NOVEMBER 3, 1847 TRIBUTE TO LT. J.B. MORAGNE At a meeting of the Abbeville Light Infantry, held at the Court House on Friday the 29th ultimo, occasioned by the intelligence lately received of the death of Lt. J.B. MORAGNE, who was Captain of this Company, the following Resolutions were unanimously adopted: Resolved; that we have heard with deep regret of the death of our brave and gallant Captain J.B. MORAGNE, who nobly fell in the storming of Chapultepec. His many virtues which commanded our respect while living, will endear to us his memory. Resolved; that in his death the Abbeville Light Infantry has lost of its brightest ornaments, and Abbeville District one of her most talented and promising citizens. Resolved; that as a respect to his memory, we will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. Resolved; that we tender to the family of the deceased our sincere condolence and that in testimony thereof, the Secretary furnish them a copy of these proceedings. Also Resolved; that we have heard with regret that another of our Company, Lt. SELLECK, was severely wounded; we earnestly hope that he may live, to enjoy the rewards of his valor. J.H. WILSON, Chairman J. McILWAIN, Secretary --------- On Saturday the 30th ultimo, the Abbeville Bar paid a just tribute of respect to Lt. J.B. MORAGNE, once one of us, but now gone, when he met his death nobly on the bloody field of Churbusco. We can truly say, "he lies in the red grave his good sword has dug", and surely this will be a great consolation to his afflicted family. On Motion, B.Y. Martin was called to the chair and E. Noble requested to act as Secretary when Hiram Tillman, Esq. offered the following resolutions which unanimously expressed the feelings of the meeting. Whereas, intelligence has reached us of the untimely but glorious fall on the late bloody field of Chupultepec, of our much beloved and gallant young friend and brother, 1st Lt. John B. MORAGNE. One whom we have uniformly respected for his talents, and admired for his integrity, and loved for his virtues, and who we had fondly hoped, after fighting the battles of his country, might be permitted to return to his home and again live amongst us, the pride of his family, an honor to his country, and an ornament to the profession he had so auspiciously begun. Be it therefore resolved by his brethren of the Abbeville Bar, that whilst we deeply deplore his premature death, and mourn for him as for our own household, it is a proud satisfaction to know that he died a sweet and noble death, that of the soldier in defence of his country's rights and honor. Resolved, that we deeply sympathise with his bereaved family and relatives in their irreparable loss, and their deep anguish for the death of one so much beloved and so justly esteemed. Resolved, that in token of our sorrow and our high regard for the memory of the deceased, we will wear the usual badge of mourning for the space of thirty days. B.Y. Martin, Chairman Ed. BIRDSHAW $10.00 To cash paid for pension to William PRICE $10.00 ------------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, NOVEMBER 10, 1847 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF COLONEL PIERCE MASON BUTLER The desire to know every thing which relates to the past career of this gallant hero, who fell so gloriously leading his cherished Palmetto's to victory before the walls of Mexico, is a feeling worthy of his name. We feel it is a duty we owe to his memory, to publish the following biographical sketch, the facts of which we have derived from the most authentic and reliable sources. There was such a rare combination of circumstances in his conduct and death, circumstances and events calculated to excite the pride of every South Carolinian, that we feel the general curiosity to know all about his family and previous life, should be gratified. He was the son of the late Gen. Wm. BUTLER of Edgefield, S.C., a distinguished officer of the Revolution, and for many years a member of the Congress ot he United States. The ancestors of General BUTLER came originally from Ireland and settled in Pennsylvania. Thence the branch of the family from which General Butler descended, removed to Loudoun county in Virginia. The father of General Wm. Butler, Captain James Butler, settled in Edgefield District in this state, where he resided at the commencement of the War of the Revolution, in which he, together with all his sons, who were over fourteen years old, bore an active part from the commencement, until near its close, when he was killed with his second son, at Turner's Station. He was confined in prison and on board the prison ship for eighteen months during all which time, the most urgent importunities were used, and the most flattering offers made to induce him to abandon the cause of his country. With the sufferings of the heroic men confined in that prison ship, all are familiar. General William Butler, his eldest son, entered the Army of the Revolution as Lieutenant at the age of 18 and at its close, when not more than 21, he was a Captain. (page torn, but appears to say he died in 1821...) Colonel Pierce Mason Butler was born in Edgefield District on the 11th of April 1798. After receiving a good English education, he was sent with his brother Senator Butler to the school of the celebrated Doctor Waddel. He abandoned his purpose of a regular classical education and in the fall of 1819, entered the Army of the United States as a Lieutenant and remained in the regular service until he resigned his appointment as Captain in 1828. He was then elected Cashier and afterwards President of the Branch of the Bank of the State at Columbia. On the breaking out of the Florida War, a Regiment of Volunteers was raised in South Carolina of which Colonel Butler was elected Lieutenant Colonel. In that campaign, he gave such striking evidence of all high and generous qualities that without the slightest agency of his own, he was elected Governor of the State by the unanimous vote of the Legislature. Shortly after the expiration of his Gubernatorial term, the office of Agent of the Cherokee Indians was tendered him by President Tyler, which he accepted. At the period of his agency, the Cherokee people were unfortunately divided into three factions of the most imbittered character. So high was the conduct and so pure all the purposes of the Agent, that on the election of Mr. Polk to the Presidency, the leading men of all three of these parties earnestly requested that Colonel Butler might be retained in office. But it was not done. He was afterward employed by the Government to make a Treaty with the Comanche and other Indian tribes of Texas, in which he entirely succeeded. It may with truth be said that in filling as he has done so many offices, civil and military, the duties of no one of them has ever been more faithfully and ably discharged. Whilest he was absent negotating the Treaty with the Comanche Indians, a call was made upon the State for a Regiment for the Mexican War. Colonel Butler was called to the command of it, by the almost unanimous vote of the Regiment. He was at the time prostrated on a sick bed, the victim of a complication of diseases, amongst them an acute neuralgic affliction. It was not in his nature to refuse the call, although there are very few men who have not under the circumstances, done so. For several months before he left home for Mexico he was unable to walk and scarecly so, when he took command of the Regiment. From that period, his life and actions are known to all and will forever fill a glorious page in the history of his country. He was so generally known, that it would be superflous to say more, but we hope we may be pardoned for saying that we have rarely known a man more highly endowed, an intellect of a high order, a heart the home of all noble and generous sentiments beyond all comparison, the noblest form and most striking person we ever saw, and manners and address of which no word but fascination will convey an adequate idea. The immediately family of Colonel Butler are a widow and six children, his venerable mother, two brothers, the present Senator Butler and the Hon. Wm. Butler, and an only sister, the wife of General Waddy THOMPSON. -------------- CITATION South Carolina, Abbeville District Court of Ordinary Whereas, Dounce CALHOUN has applied for Letters of Administration on the estate of John CALHOUN, deceased. David Lesly, Ordinary, Nov. 10, 1847 --------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, NOVEMBER 24, 1847 THE PALMETTO REGIMENT We regret to learn from a letter from a Company raised in our District for the Mexican War, of the death of another of our brave sons, a gallant spirit who has fallen in the enemy's land, Lieutenant Benton W. STEWART. When his country called for volunteers he was among the first to respond to that call and nobly exchanging the rank of Major for that of a Private, sacrificing wealth and the affection of friends, rallied under the Palmetto banner. Though not permitted to die amidst the clash of arms and the roar of cannon, his memory will nevertheless be cherished by his country. It appears that he died after the battles around the city of Mexico, we presume from some disease incident to that climate, after having passed unharmed through the conflict. By another letter from Dr. McLaren who has charge of the General Hospital at Perote and addressed to his brother in this place, we have the following list giving the location of the wounds in the Palmetto Regiment, which we believe has not been published before: KILLED Col. P.M. BUTLER, shot through the head, in the battle of Churubusco Lieut. W.R. WILLIAMS, shot through the head, in the battle of Churubusco Lieut. J.R. CLARK, shot through the head, in the battle of Churubusco Lieut. D.L. ADAMS, shot through the abdomen, in the battle of Churubusco Lieut. J.W. CANTEY, shot through the abdomen at Chepultepec Lieut. O'BANNON, wounded slightly at Chepultepec Lt. C.S. KIRKLAND, wounded slightly at Chepultepec ------------ ANOTHER LETTER FROM PALMETTO REGIMENT We have been favored with the sight of a letter from an officer of the Palmetto Regiment, to one of his relatives in this city dated the 27th ultimo, from which we gather the following particulars. That in the battle of Chapultepec on the 13th inst. the fragment of the Palmetto Regiment that went into action had 19 killed and wounded in their advance on that city; that in storming the wall of the fortification where the slaughter of the Regiment was the greatest, Lieut. MANIGAULT was the first person that reached the wall, and Lieut. ROBERTSON was the second; that Lieut. J. WILLIS CANTEY received a wound and died that night; that Lieut. MORAGNE was killed; that Lieut. STEEN was wounded and has since died; that Lieut. CLARK was wounded in the leg and Lieut. SELLECK also wounded. That Lieut. ROBERTSON was wounded in the leg by a piece of wood splintered off by a cannon ball, but is now doing well. Maj. NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ABBEVILLE BANNER", Abbeville, South Carolina for AUGUST 1847, SEPTEMBER 1847, OCTOBER 1847 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, AUGUST 4, 1847 OBITUARIES DIED, at the Court House district, Abbeville, on the 28th ultimo, Anastasia Rebecca, wife of Stuart Adair GODMAN, in the 21st year of her age. That "we must die" and that "in the midst of life we are in death" are truths which this sad bereavement is well fitted to impress on every serious and thoughtful mind. For at the close of a single day's illness, we have seen the young, devoted, fondly cherished mother and wife called to part with all she loved, and all by whom she was beloved on earth, and to resign her spirit into the hands of her Creator. Surely such a scene is fraught with wholesome instruction for the living. Address any information to the Banner office. --------- OBITUARY DIED, on the 13th of May last, in the hospital at Vera Cruz, Mexico, in the 19th year of his age, James Leonard WATSON, of Company E, Palmetto Regiment. It is with sorrow, moderated, we trust with submission to the sovereign will of Him who gave and hath taken away, that we record the death of one who was young and talented, liberally endowed with those gifts which would recommend him as a man and Christian, which would endear him as a companion and friend. But especially is it a mournful task, when with youth there is associated what are commending in the qualities of the mind, ennobling in the virtues of the heart. Indeed, it with reluctance, we can even realize the fact, that Death has removed him from us; that we are debarred the privilege of intercourse with him, that our reciprocal interchanges of thought and feeling are forever at an end. We could have wished that the sun of his existence which arose with promise, had attained its noon of brilliancy, its gradual decline, and at last have set where around it, were gathered the clouds of the evening in all their gorgeousness and glory. We lament, but may not murmur, at this dispensation of Providence, which has taken from us one whose life was of the strictest propriety, one so admirably qualified to exert an influence for good, one who was so widely and deservedly esteemed. Never was the tyrant messenger Death more insatiate, more uncompromising, nothing short of such a mind would satisfy, no sacrifice but of such an age of one so gentle, to appease the King of Terrors. Such as one who has left us, and we can but remember and mourn. ----------- LAND FOR SALE The subscriber, desirous of emigrating West, offers for sale his tract of land, situated in Abbeville District on the Vienna road, 6 miles from Liberty Hill, containing 487 acres, 250 of which is cleared and in cultivation. This 20th of Aug. 1847. David Lesly, Ordinary -------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 1, 1847 OBITUARY It has become our melancholy duty to record the death of an amiable and pious female, Mrs. Talitha Goode STUART, consort of Dr. John A. STUART of this District, daughter of Col. Larkin GRIFFIN, who departed this life on the 13th ult., in the 35th year of her age. Mrs. Stuart had been an orderly member of the Baptist church for 16 years, being one of the many who obtained a hope in the Savior during the interesting revival of religion enjoyed by the churches in the year 1831. The writer of this brief obituary remembers her with pleasing recollection, having had an opportunity of witnessing the exercises of her mind whilst under distress for sin and of rejoicing with her at her conversion to God. And now that she has been called away by death from the society of her friends on earth, whilst we deeply sympathize with the afflicted parents and other relations, it is no small consolation to be able to state that her consistent course of Christian conduct for 16 years has proved the genuineness of her conversion and the sincerity of her profession. It is the testimony of her husband that "she enjoyed religion much in health and in sickness." Her afflictions were protracted for twelve months, during the last six months of which her sufferings were great, all of which she bore with christian fortitude; not a murmur against the dispensation of Providence escaping her lips. Convinced in her mind from the symptoms of her disease that she could not recover, she expressed herself as being entirely resigned to the will of God. A few days before her decease, she desired that a chapter of the Bible should be read and pointed out the 14th chapter of Job as a suitable one. Truly may it be said of her, "she cometh forth like a flower and is cut down; she fleeth as a shadow and continueth not." She has many relatives and dear friends to mourn her departure, in whose memories her many virtues will long be cherished; and whose deep sorrow is only mitigated by the language of the Bible, "blessed are the dead that die in the Lord from henceforth; yea saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." ---------- CITATION South Carolina, Abbeville District Court of Ordinary Whereas, Thos. We allude to 1st Sergeant B.F. MATTISON. This young man possessed a pure and spotless character, unflinching integrity and undoubted piety. He was an ornament to society and an honor to his parents. "To err is human", but we believe that this excellent young man had as few faults as men can have. When his country called for volunteers, he was among the first to respond. He let a home where he might have lived in affluence, gave up the society of doting parents and admiring friends, forsook all, to obey his country's call. He went, and his blood has been poured out on the plains of Mexico, where his remains are now reposing, and in our opinion, when Gabriel's trumpet has fallen, in the sleeping dust of all those who have fallen, no one will arise with a better evidence of a well spent life than B.F. MATTISON. To his father and his mother we offer all the consolation we can, our heart felt sympathies. ----------- CITATION South Carolina, Abbeville District Court of Ordinary Whereas, S.C. NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ABBEVILLE BANNER", Abbeville, South Carolina for JUNE 1847 and JULY 1847 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, JUNE 2, 1847 OBITUARIES DIED, at her residence in Abbeville District on Tuesday morning the 18th ult. of Cholera Morbus, Mrs. Mary Caroline BRADLEY, wife of William K. BRADLEY, in the 26th year of her age. She has left an affectionate husband and two small children to mourn their loss. Her death was sudden and to her friends, unexpected. She was at church on Sabbath apparently in good health and in less than forty-eight hours was called by an all-wise Providence to the world of spirits. She was something more than 10 years, a consistent member of the Associate Reformed Church at Cedar Springs and Long Cane. She has been called in the prime of life to pass through the dark and narrow valley and although from the severity of her disease she was unable in her last moments to speak and tell those around her how a christian can die, yet from her past life, her friends have far better evidence of her eternal happiness, than can possibly be derived from a death bed scene or any expressions of those upon the verge of eternity. She was a humble and sincere Christian, a faithful and devoted wife, a tender and affectionate mother and an indulgent mistress. She was beloved and esteemed by all who knew her and her untimely end is severely felt and lamented by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. But we sorrow not as those who have no hope, but believe that our loss has been her unspeakable gain, and that she is now amongst those who have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb, and that she now joins in everlasting ascriptions of praise to Him that loves us and gave himself for us. ---------- DIED, on Thursday, the 20th ultimo at his residence in Abbeville District, S.C., two miles north of Lowndsville, Theodore G. BAKER in the 26th year of his age, second son of Joseph and Lany BAKER, leaving his family, parents and many friends to mourn his death. HIs confinement was short and his sufferings great. But he considered them sent upon him in mercy by his Heavenly Father and endured them with patience and fortitude and light, when compared with the Heavenly glory for which they were designed to prepare him. He is now released, and faith would rejoice that he has exchanged the chamber of sufferings for the mansion of eternal joy and the communion of the blessed society above. Oh, that his parents and family whose welfare concerned him so much, may imitate his faith and piety and share with him the blessedness of Heaven. ---------- CITATION South Carolina, Abbeville District Court of Ordinary Whereas, G. D. Lesly, Ordinary, May 24, 1847 --------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, JUNE 9, 1847 EXTRACT OF LETTER TO EDITOR OF ABBEVILLE BANNER American Camp, 6 miles from Monterey, Mexico May 1, 1847 DIED, on the 11th of April 1847, at Matamoras in Mexico, Corporal J.L. BOYD, late a member of the Independent Company of 1st Mississippi Volunteers, known as Company H., otherwise known as Mississippi Volunteer Red Rovers. The deceased was a native of Abbeville District, S.C. and emigrated to Mississippi two or three years since. When the War with Mexico began, and a call was made on Mississippi for troops, he was one of the first to tender his services to his country. After the volunteers were mustered into service at Vicksburg, they moved to the battle ground below New Orleans, perhaps as unhealthy a spot as in the United States. There we were exposed to the most inclement weather, and scores of our brave and patriotic fellow soldiers fell victims to disease and death. While encamped at that place, our friend and fellow soldier was attacked with intermittent fever, which he suffered from during our long and tedious passage of 32 days across the Gulf of Mexico, and which reduced him to infantile weakness before we landed at Point Isabelle. A few days before we landed, he was attacked with the horrid disease which has destroyed more of our brave army than the fallen, in fighting the enemy, to wit: Diarrhea, and which, in this climate, seems to defy the skill of the most eminent physicians and all the usual remedies. When our Regiment arrived at Matamoras, he was reduced so low that we were compelled, though with regret, to leave him and a number of others, in the hospital of that place and where he was eventually honorably discharged from the service. When the writer saw him last he appeared to be improving and his friends all hoped he would eventually recover and be restored to his numerous friends. It was then his intention to return to the United States as soon as he recovered sufficient strength. He afterwards relapsed and continued to suffer and decline until death released him from his sufferings. For the satisfaction of his distant friends, others who have been discharged from the hospital have informed me that every attention was paid to his comfort that could have been, even among his friends at home. He was strictly moral and perfectly resigned to his fate. His unassuming and friendly deportment endeared him to our whole company, both officers and men and his death is regretted by all who knew him. Any information respecting his business may be obtained by his friends by their dropping a line to Judge Huntington in Kosikusko, Attalla county, Mississippi. ------------ MARRIAGES Married, on Tuesday morning the 1st inst. by the Rev. NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ABBEVILLE BANNER", Abbeville, South Carolina for APRIL 1847, MAY 1847 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, APRIL 7, 1847 OBITUARY DIED, near Cambridge in this District on Wednesday morning the 31st ult., of Pulmonary Consumption, Mrs. Sarah E. CHILD, aged 23 years and five months. The deceased was the widow of the late Capt. Robt. CHILD, and eldest daughter of the late Rev. R.M. TODD. She has left many sincere friends and devoted relatives to lament her early death, besides a son who is entirely too young to have any knowledge of the great loss he has sustained. In 1839 while at school at Greenville during a revival of religion, Mrs. Child united with the Baptist church there, then under the care of Rev. Mr. Spaulding. If the friendship and kindness of neighbors, if the affection and tears of relatives, or the skill of medical aid could have retained her, she would still be here, but all were unable to change that inflexible truth, "Dust art thou, dust thou shall return." Her Heavenly Father had need of her or he would not have called her home. "Precious in the sight of our Lord is the death of his saints." Throughout her affliction she was patient and resigned, having as she expressed herself, confidence in Christ. But she is gone, and we shall see her no more on earth; no more shall we enjoy her society or hear the sweet music of her voice; she is gone from the evil to come, gone to the kingdom of glory. "Hark the golden harps are ringing, sounds unearthly fill her ear, Millions now in Heaven singing, Greet her joyful entrance there." None but those who were intimately acquainted with the deceased, can properly appreciate her character; to such then we would say, respect her memory, by obliterating her foibles and imitating her virtues. O, envy her blest abode, In happiness secure, Where streams of everlasing bliss, Their pleasant waters pour. She quickly shunned the yawning Gulf, Nor feared the threatening king, her soul to Heaven was safely borne, By cherubs on the wing. ----------- GREAT BARGAIN A great bargain is offered in that well known tract of land, formerly belonging to Mr. Samuel JACK and by him, sold to Mr. William BOWIE, for three thousand dollars in 1835. Said tract contains six hundred and forty-two acres. It lies within one mile of the Abbeville Male Academy. There are about 300 acres in woods, about eighty acres in tolerably fresh land and the balance more or less worn. No plantation is better watered, having a considerable creek passing through it and springs convenient to almost every part of the tract. There are probably sixty or seventy acres of lowgrounds, which, with proper ditching, might be made very valuable. The woodland is so distributed as to make the plantation susceptable of division, into three small farms, and, if I cannot sell it as a whole, I may be induced so to divide it. I also offer my dwelling house and lot on which I live, in the Village of Abbeville. The house contains seven rooms besides closets, all well finished. The lot contains one acre and is supplied with good out buildings; has an exceptional well of water with a patent, case iron pump. My weak lungs and enfeebled health warn me of the necessity of seeking a less changeable climate. For this reason, I will sell the above property very cheap. Franklin BRANCH, Abbeville, March 31, 1847 ---------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, APRIL 14, 1847 OBITUARIES DIED, at his residence near this place on Friday the 9th inst., Mr. R.H. LESLY. ---- DIED, at Oakwood on the 8th inst., Mrs. Mary CAIN, aged 65 years and some months. The deceased was a native of Caroline County, Virginia and was descended on the maternal side from some of the best families of that state. In 1796, she removed with her father to this District, where she has ever since resided. Having married at a very early age, she was left while yet young, a widow with six children, in which situation she had need of the fortitude and energy which she so admirably displayed. No one could have more fully exemplified the scripture representation of a widow, indeed, "but though broken in spirit, she was not cast down." Everyone who knew her can testify to the modest dignity of her manners, and to the cheerful hospitality of her house and heart. Her religious character was without blemish. More than twenty-five years ago she was a member of the Presbyterian church, and we can safely say that she never was a rock of offense, or stumbling block to anyone; but ever had a heart and hand deeply interested in the church and cause she so much loved. Of her uncommon devotion as a parent much might be said; but that is chronicled in the affectionate remembrances of descendants of the third and fourth generation. In private life she was remarkable for a self-denying spirit, a tender regard for the poor and suffering and a conscientious discharge of every duty. In her last years her mind was darkened by frequent shocks of paralysis, but with all the light of reason which remained, she was evidently waiting to be removed; and in one season of illness, expressed great desire to be gone. She sunk at last, yielding to the grave, like a ripe shock of corn in full season. And we sorrow not as those without hope, and humble hope of joys to come gives us blessed assurance that she has exchanged the dark prison of mortality for a place around the throne of the most high. We know, says St. Paul, "that when the earthly house of this our tabernacle is dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens." ----------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, APRIL 21, 1847 TO BE HUNG We understand that a negro boy belonging to Mr. Wm. David Lesly, Ordinary -------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, MAY 5, 1847 OBITUARY DIED on March 30, 1847 at Vera Cruz, Mexico of Dropsy brought on by protracted Diarrhea, Isaiah STARKEY, aged about 54 years. The subject of this notice was a very poor man and has left a family in destitute circumstances to mourn his loss. The following extract is from the letter of Capt. J.F. Marshall to Mrs. STARKEY, apprising her of the death of her husband: "While under my command, he was a prompt and efficient soldier and in his death I have lost, as well as our country, a patriotic volunteer. I tender to you as the head of his bereaved family, my sympathies in the loss of a husband and a father and hope you may all find comfort in looking to Him who alone can assist the distressed. BAKER, aged 23 years and four months. In the death of Dr. Baker, society has sustained a serious loss. HIs intellect was of the first order and well cultivated. As a physician, his judgment was sound and discriminating, and his attention to his patients was tender, kind and indefatigable. As a son and brother, he was dutiful and affectionate and as little tinged with selfishness as perhaps any. But all his fair prospects as a man and physician are obscured by the shades of death. The painful conflict now is o'er, disease and death can do more more, The well formed dust rests in the grave, the soul with Christ who came to save. After too long at geocities, I have moved the Abbeville SCGenWeb site onto a Rootsweb Server, not that it will make much difference, but I got TIRED of the 20% pop-up that Geocities/Yahoo instills on its free sites. The Abbeville website can now be viewed at" http://www.rootsweb.com/~scabbevi/ ". Thanks, David Christopher PS; I will hopefully get a few updates done on the site as I work on setting it up....... ____________________________________________________________________________________ Got a little couch potato? DUNN, all of this District. ------- OBITUARIES DIED, at her residence in this District on the 4th inst., Mrs. Mary DONNALD, wife of John DONNALD, in the 61st year of her age. She has left a disconsolate husband and eleven children, a numberous train of grandchildren and other relatives to mourn their irreparable loss; but they "sorrow not as those who have no hope", being persuaded that their loss is her eternal gain. Early in life she became a convert of the Presbyterian faith under the preaching of the Rev. Robert Wilson, then Pastor of Upper Long Cane Church, and was a regular and consitent member of Greenville Church under the pastoral care of Rev. Hugh Dickson, for forty-one years. Her remains are deposited at the latter place and we trust her spirit has ascended to the bosom of her God. -------- DIED, at the residence of William JOLLY in Pickens District on the 2nd ult., Mrs. Sarah J. BRANYAN, consort of the late Thomas BRANYON of Abbeville District, aged 63 years. ------- DIED, at his residence in Abbeville District on the 24th ult., Thomas BRANYAN, in the 68th year of his age, after a short and severe attack of billious fever. Mr. and Mrs. Branyan were affectionate parents and kind neighbors. Called to their exit in a few days of each other, they seemed indeed to be "one flesh", and the affliction is doubly severe to their family of eight children and a large circle of friends. "All that live must die, passing through nature to eternity." -------- DIED, at Alligator C.H., Columbia Co., East Fla., Mr. John RASOR, in the 47th year of his age. He was a citizen of this District and has left a wife and six children, an aged father, one brother and three sisters and many other relations and friends to mourn their irreparable loss; but they mourn not as those who have no hope." He was a member of the Baptist church for the last 14 or 15 years. Those seven gentlemen who were traveling with him, together with those kind friends about Alligator, are entitled to and hereby tendered the most sincere thanks of his relations, for the kind manner in which they treated him during his illness. -------- DIED, on the 19th of August at the residence of John A. SPEER, in this District, Miss Ferila T. PASCHALL of Lafayette Co. Miss., the eldest daughter of Leah and Samuel PASCHALL, in the 18th year of her age. She had been a member of the M.E. Church for three years. Her confinement was short and her suffering great, but she endured them all with patience and fortitude which Divine grace alone could impart. She considered them as laid upon her in mercy by her Heavenly Father, and light when compared with her desserts and the Heavenly glory for which they were designed to prepare her. She is now released and faith would rejoice that she has exchanged the chamber of suffering for the mansion of eternal joy and the communion of the blessed society above. O, that her parents, whose welfare concerned her so much, for whose salvation she would even have been willing to remain and suffer here, had it been the will of God. May we imitate her faith and piety and share with her the blessedness of Heaven. ---------- NEWSPAPER Issue of OCTOBER 21, 1846 CITATION STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, Abbeville District Court of Ordinary Whereas, Jesse REAGIN has applied to grant him Letters of Administration on the Estates of Joseph REAGIN and Young REAGIN, deceased; this is therefore to cite all kindred and creditors of the deceased to appear in the Court of Ordinary on the 1st Monday in November 1846, to show cause why it should not be granted.
