    3. Three wills listed in Index of South Carolina for CHASTAIN: 1. John CHASTAIN - Anderson County 2. John CHASTAIN - Abbeville District 3. Rane CHASTAIN - Abbeville District I have two abstracts of the wills mentioned here, and these families, or relatives, are also in deed records of Edgefield County. The name caught my eye because the CHASTAIN families are named in The Douglas Register..."refugee" records, some birth records, etc. These if early VA. Audrey

Then, there's an online 1830 census of Abbeville District: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/abbeville/census/1830/ So, start with your 1840 census and draw up a list of neighbors to your family of interest. Then, go back to the 1830 census and look for that same set of neighbors. Then go backwards to 1820 and look for some of that same set of household heads. From there take a listing of wealthy neighbors (those with large numbers of slaves) or else those who were well-known (such as members of the Calhoun family) and then match them to their presence on that 1825 map (based on 1820 information). It's not perfect, but it provides you with a better chance of finding out something than hoping for a possibly non-existent post-1840 map. I have the census documents, I know where they lived, I just am looking for an 1840 or later landowner map of Abbeville County, specifically the area around the dividing line between Abbeville and Anderson Counties, along the Savannah River. Anyone with a link to this type of map, or if you know where one is, please let me know. Thanks! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are two items that should be of great interest to anyone trying to understand early 19th century Abbeville District settlement. First, there is a collection GIF image files for the 1820 census of Abbeville District. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/abbeville/census/1820/ Second, there is an online image of the 1825 Robert Mills Landowner's Map of Abbeville District. This does -NOT- display all landowners. Instead, it displays principal and important landowners and sites such as mills, meeting houses, etc. as were found during a survey of the district in 1820. Both the census and the survey were conducted in the -SAME- year! This map image can be zoomed into and scrolled across in search of place names and those places where important personages resided. http://www.davidrumsey.com/maps860022-23855.html If you can find your ancestors in that listing of the 1820 census alongside their neighbors, then you can compare those neighbors against that map's display of landowners. There are possibilities in comparing these two resources. Sincerely, Dale E. Reddick __________________________________ These links have some interesting maps and other info as well. Some are more detailed than others. You can see the 1825 Abbeville County map that "winn" spoke of in yesterday's post, here: http://www.historicmapsrestored.com/countymaps/a-d/abbeville1825.html This shows some landowners and is very detailed for towns, rivers, creeks, streams, churches, etc. Very nice. I have seen some older ones for Anderson County where the landowner's name was handwritten in, and they are great. I was hoping to find one like that for anytime after 1840 in Abbeville County. I did learn there is one from around 1895 in the Abbeville County library according to the first post; I just can't get there right now. I appreciate everyone's help. Joanne B. However, the only one of Abbeville County is the 1825 Landowner map that I spoke of in my post; my ancestors did not come to Abbeville until around 1840. The other site only has maps of the Charleston area. The maps will surely help others, though. Thank you, again, for the information. Joanne B. 3. about a year ago I was doing a little online research (ancestry.com) on Martha Hamilton, a colateral line of Archibald Hamilton of Ulster and Augusta Co. VA. Archibald's son, Major Andrew Hamilton is a well known revolutionary figure from Abbeville. To my surprise, Martha's name appeared in a book on Carter genealogy! Don't know if there is ANY connection to what you are interested in or not, but thought I'd mention it just incase you wanted to follow up on it. > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this > mailing list. > > Author: sandracarter849 > Surnames: CARTER > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.abbeville/2331/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Any one out there, have any info on a Carter Family, between > 1870,&1900 in this cty?Cemetery, marriage,or obit for this > cty?Appreciate any help. > > Important Note: > The author of this message may not be subscribed to this > list.
