    2. Gloria You might try the Wallace State Library. They have all the records on file and a wealth of information available. I have emailed them for Rev War and Civil War Records. They charge $5 search fee and then 25 cents per page to send you copies of the records. I even emailed them to see if the records was available. They have military records for all states, census records, death and marriage records and lots and lots of other genealogy data. The library even has seminars and trips for research and information purposes. I only wish I was close enough to go there myself. Betty at the library is one of the most helpful persons I have run across and responds to all inquiries within a few days. (let's hope she doesn't get too many now that she can't respond as fast as she usually does). You can do a search on the site yourself or email her for help. www(dot)wallacestate.edu/library/genealogy.html Betty's email address is betty.lott(at)wallacestate.edu Jan In a message dated 9/18/2007 4:34:13 AM Pacific Daylight Time, glowells@bellsouth.net writes: Audrey, Do you have any suggestions on how to find out about the South Carolina 3rd Regiment, and its men, a roll call, anything?! The genealogist who worked on my papers said if he lived in Abbeville he was not in the 5th regiment, he was a minor, and I have not proved service. What I should do, he said, was find his father and learn where Thomas lived during the War. I have looked for Thomas' parents and his siblings all these years - I would love to be able to prove Thomas' War time residence !!! I went to Google and learned the South Carolina 3rd Regiment formed at Ninety-six and the 5th regiment formed at Charleston! 3. Here is the one from Abbeville. Audrey Source: Abbeville District, SC Wills and Bonds: "HILL, John, Sr - Box 42, Pack 939: Will dated Oct 15, 1812 in Abbeville Dist. Rec. April 16, 1813. The HILL book states there isn't much on Sam'l HILL, perhaps he stayed in Fairfield (don't think so). He may have been in Abbeville. 2. There is a will in Edgefield I'm going to type in for you also. Both of these wills appear to be part of the Fairfield HILLS. 3. Hi Sharon, I just found a will for John HILL, Sr in Abbeville and will post it soon. This is most likely the same family of Fairfield because of the MABRY name as a witness. I'll type it in and you decide. However, think our Samuels are different ones; my Samuel's Elizabeth married my ancestor, Milton MAXWELL in TN. Back soon with that will abstract. I also have a HILL book and because of locale, you very well may belong to the same ancestors. CHATHAM Of Greenwood, Abbeville District. ------ DIED Died on the 12th inst., Mrs. Eliza M. KENNEDY, wife of M.B. KENNEDY, and daughter of William BARKSDALE, in the twenty-sixth year of her age. Several years since, the deceased became a member of the Presbyterian church at Providence and she has since exemplified by a consistent life, the doctrine she professed. She and her babe both lie in one coffin; but those left behind feel assured that their irreparable loss is her eternal gain. ----------- STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, Abbeville District Court of Ordinary Whereas, David F. This is therefore to cite all the kindred and creditors of said dec'd to appear at the Court of Ordinary for the said district, to be held at the Abbeville courthouse on the 10th day of March next, to show cause, if any, why the said administration should not be granted. This 22nd day of February, 1856. William Hill, Ordinary of Abbeville District --------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 6, 1856 MARRIAGES Married on the 13th ult., by Rev. David Wills, Col. John D. WILLIAMS of Laurens to Miss Anna Eliza BARNETT of Abbeville district. Married on the 21st ult., by Rev. W.P. Martin, Mr. David A. GREER of Anderson district to Miss D. Adaline, daughter of Capt. N.R. REEVE, of this district. --------- OBITUARIES DIED, on the 22nd ult., near Warrenton in this District, Mrs. Nancy Woodrow BROOKS, daughter of Andrew GILLESPIE. Her disease was a malignant Typhoid affliction; she languished for seventy-six days and died in the 25th year of her age. The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church and a woman of extraordinary piety. She was remarkable for the constancy and ardour with which she studied the bible. Her pious temper and her amiable manners rendered her an object of affection to all who knew her. She was perfectly and calmly resigned to die; it did not cost her a struggle to meet the king of terrors, except that it invovled the sundering of sweet domestic ties; death was even a welcome guest. She was able to part from the dearest earthly objects, from venerable parents, from a devoted husband, from tender babes, without a murmur, almost without a tear, not that she loved them less, but her Savior more. The divine, transcended the human affection; her heart was in heaven because her richest treasure was laid up there. ---------- DIED, Mrs. Nancy MARTIN, consort of Jacob MARTIN. She departed this life on the 3rd of October last, at the old family homestead in Abbeville district. She had lived a long and useful life, being at the time of her deceased in the seventy-first year of her age. She was an affectionate wife, a devoted mother, and a kind and benevolent neighbor. Being a woman of frank and open disposition, with admirable traits of character, she never failed to inspire confidence and produce a favorable impression upon all who moved within the circle of her acquaintance. And although the rude hand of Death has applied the withering touch, and drawn over her the black veil of mortality, yet she still has an abiding place in the hearts of all of her neighbors. Mrs. Martin was not a member of any church, but had always been piously inclined, and entertained a strong belief in the truth of the Christian religion. In her last moments while her friends and relations were solicitously encircling her bed and death seemed to be stealing over her like a serene slumber, she waked as if from a profound reverie and told them not to grieve for her, that she relied implicity on the Savior, felt secure in the reliance and earnestly entreated them to do the same. She has left a large and affectionate family and an extensive circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn her irreparable loss, but we feel confident that their loss is her everlasting gain. ----------- DEPARTED this life on January 24th 1856, Mr. James HERRON at his residence in Tippah county, Miss. in his 85th year. He was for eighty years a citizen of Abbeville and Anderson Districts, S.C. The Anderson Gazette ---------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 13, 1856 MARRIAGES Married on the 6th of March 1856 by the Rev. Joseph Gibert, Mr. J.J. CAMPBELL to Miss J.S. TAYLOR, all of Abbeville district. --------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 20, 1856 OBITUARY DIED, in this District, on Wednesday the 27th ult., Mrs. Elizabeth BROOKS, consort of J. Wesley BROOKS, in the 37th year of her age. It does indeed seem true that "death loves a shining mark." The subject of this notice was one of those whose worth and usefulness, whose uniform amiability and sweetness of disposition endeared her to every heart. She had been a member of the Presbyterian church for sixteen years and during that time, she illustrated and enforced the truths of the religion she professed, by a Godly walk and conversation. It is hardly necessary to add that at the close of such a life, there was a peaceful death and the hope of a glorious immortality. During her long and painful illness, she frequently repeated the following lines, which doubtless indicate the comforting hopes which sustained and strengthened her soul for the last conflict: "There is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign, Infinite day excludes the night, and pleasures banish pain." She has left behind a bereaved husband, a widowed and heart-stricken mother, and a large circle of mourning friends. "Green be the turf above thee, Friend of my better days, None knew thee but to love thee, None named thee but to praise." ---------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 27, 1856 OBITUARY DIED, in this district of Scarlet Fever on the 4th inst., Miss Frances E. BARMORE, in the 20th year of her age. Thus, by an inscrutable Providence, one who was in the morning of life, and who promised much usefulness, has been called to experience eternal realities. She was amiable and lovely, she was eminently endowed with those virtues which are calculated to inspire esteem and confidence. Kind, generous, affectionate and confiding, she was loved and respected by all who knew her. By her death, a breach has been made in a large circle of relatives and friends, which time cannot repair; a mother's heart has been wrung with anguish; the hearts of her sisters and brothers has been made to bleed, and a vacuum created at the maternal board which can never be filled. But her surviving friends have the satisfaction to believe that through faith in God, she triumphed over the "last enemy". The subject of personal religion had occupied her attention, and in her last sickness, she expressed entire resignation to the Divine will, cheered by the hope that she would be received to the enjoyment of that "rest which cometh for the people of God." ---------- $100. REWARD Ranaway from the subscriber on the 24th of February, my boy AARON. He is of yellow or copper color and has a large scar on one of his arms running from the wrist upwards, supposed to have been burned. He is a keen, shrewd boy with a rather sly look, over 6 feet high and weights 200 pounds or more. I will pay the above reward of $100. for his delivery to me with proof sufficient to convict any white person or persons of harboring him, or $40. for the delivery to me without proof, or $25. if lodged in any jail in the state, so I can get him. 3. While doing research on the 1840 and the 1850 census records some extra information can be obtained. If this is information you already know pay no attention. This is for the rest of you. I observed, while doing Alabama research, that the 1840 census has an extra page for counting Revolutionaries who are drawing a pension. The 1850, of course, is the first year that they counted the families by name. In many areas they also had a Mortality Schedule listing people who had died within the last year. Many slave names are sometimes to be found by name on that schedule. 3. NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ABBEVILLE BANNER", Abbeville, South Carolina for JANUARY 1856 NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JANUARY 3, 1856 A MUSICAL PRODIGY We clip the following from the Columbus, Georgia Sentinel: "There is in this vicinity a blind negro boy, only six years old, the property of James N. BETHUNE of the Corner Stone, who exhibits the most wonderful capacity for music and is able to play almost any piece, even the most difficult, on the piano after hearing it only once or twice. He has never been instructed in music; the knowledge of the science is therefore, instinctive. He has the most intense passion for music and exhibits the greatest emotion during his performance. We have never seen so wonderful a musical prodigy before." ------------ SHOCKING AFFAIR >From "The Atlanta Republic": A son of Col. A.W. HAMMOND of this city, came to his death in a most shocking manner on Tuesday morning last. We understand the circumstances to be these: It seems that he had by some means gotton on the track of the Macon and Western Railroad, near a mile from the Depot, when the engine attached to the passenger train, which left the Depot at a quarter past five, smashed him up on the cow catcher and it was not discovered until the train reached East Point, some six miles from this city. 3. I hope someone who is interested in Abbeville is also interested in the origin of the South Carolina 3rd Regiment which was formed 6 Jun 1775 in Ninety-six Courthouse in Abbeville County, SC. I have looked for years for background on Thomas Donaldson who enlisted in Rev War 4 Apr 1776 in Abbeville - didn't know if it was city or county. When the National Archives finally was put on the computer I wrote (I had written for years but evidently the records were lost until everything was digitalized!) and received two pieces of paper, preprinted for the South Carolina 5th Regiment. I thought: Glory Hallelujah and sent off a supplement on Thomas Donaldson to DAR. I was refused!! The genealogist who answered my application said if Thomas lived in Abbeville he could not have been a member of the 5th, he was a minor and I would have to find where his father lived to prove where Thomas lived during the Rev War. So there! The 5th Regiment was formed in Charleston instead of Abbeville, so I can understand that objection. One time I was in the Caroliniana Library in University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC and was telling a gentleman that I was looking for Thomas who was supposed to have been in the 3rd Regiment. The gentleman, who worked there and seemed to know about these things, told me the 3rd was one of the elite groups, Riflemen, but as time passed their numbers dropped so low they merged with the 5th to be able to keep going. Since I had been told that by the gentleman in Caroliniana Library, when I wrote National Archives I asked for Thomas Donaldson, 5th Regiment. That is what I received - two pieces of paper preprinted for the 5th regiment and having Thomas Donaldson's name written on them, and that is what I sent off to DAR. So, does anyone have knowledge of the South Carolina 3rd Regiment formed in 1775 in Ninety-six Courthouse in Abbeville County, SC?? I feel like the man was in the Rev War but I need help to prove it. Since so many boys enlisted in the Rev War were underage and served as drummer boys and the like, I feel that my Thomas being underage should not mean anything. As far as telling who his father was and where the father lived - - - I would love to know that myself. Gloria Donaldson Wells gdwells@bellsouth.net

It's not much, so far. I've been running around today and I'm still trying to catch up with my multitudinous e-mail missives. Dale ___________________________________ Hi Herb, I just pulled out my copy of the Screven County History, which is the county where my paternal Reddicks and maternal Taylors have been found since prior to 1800. Screven Co. is halfway between Savannah and Augusta. It began being settled in the 1750s. There's an item about a Moses Pengree II, born 1650 and died 1709 who originated in Amesbury, Mass. He moved to SC and married the widow Mrs. Abigail Hendricks, daughter of William Morse (she became Pengree's second wife). Moses Pengree II was in coastal Colleton Co., SC by the late 1600s. So, apparently there was a Hendrick / Hendricks family in the Colleton Co. area prior to 1700, since there was a widow Hendricks there who remarried to a this Moses Pengree II. The present county seat for Colleton Co. is Walterboro. Colleton was the second or third portion of SC to be settled outside of what we now know of as Charleston Co. Dale ___________________________________ Dear Dale, The surname I am looking for is Hendrick/s or a variant that leads to this surname. In early 1700 SC Hendrick was used. Later in the mid 1700s we find Hendrick and Hendricks. Any help will be aprpeciated. 3. Dear Dale, Your Pengry and Abigal Hendricks and the Willtown data is where we first exchanged information and talked about both the Dorchestor and Willtown settlers from MA in 2005/6. I have studied the SC Low Country Hendrick and have thier lineage tracked. However some seem to think this is the Daniel Hendrick of MA group by inference of allied families in the area and the Moses Pengry data. However I keep saying Moses Pengry died in MA and his will was probated there from all we know. Martin Hendrix of Las Vegas is our Daniel hendrick of MA expert and he concludes with what I said about Moses Pengry. In SC the only Moses Pengry of record is not found until 1834. Also no Abibail Hendricks or Abigail Pengry has ever been found. However there is a John Hendrick late 1690s in Colleton Co., SC area and his subsequent family. Many want to connect this group to the Willtown group. However if you search the records the group from MA for Willtown were wrecked at Cape Fear and brought to SC prior to 1700s by an order of Gov. Hargrove of SC. No records show the passenger list anywhere. Land grants for these Hendricks do not occur around Willtown until 1711 and follow up through 1734 where some of these Hendrick then show a connection to the Willtown Church. Another group of these Hendrick traced through wills show in Christ Church Parish Colleton Co., SC and have a young son named James whose age fits my James Hendricks to a "T". In fact he shows in 1776 in the Colleton Co., SC Militia and then disappears as to records. The group that says these SC Hendrick are from MA has merit as the Daniel Hendrick of MA's DNA does not fit my James Hendrick/s' DNA. We can't trace anyone from this group of Hendrick to a living day person. In fact they seem to disapepar off the face of the earth after the R. W. A Charles Hendrick (possibly a brother to James Hendrick) shows in Elbert Co., GA reconstructed census in 1790 the last ray of hope and he disappears. However John Hendrick is the administrator of an estate in the 1720s for a Floyde from Devon England. A trace to Devon shows Floyde and Hendrick family there. So who know if there is a connection here. So you have a circumstantial set of data that says allied families married into a set of Hendrick with similar names of those from MA but no solid proof that they are from Daniel Hendrick of MA yet. So I continue looking for other Hendrick sources which is why I asked about the Ships List where you found your ancestors in Savannah. Another note is that one of the Hendrick from the Colleton Co., SC group at one time owned land in GA. How he got it I do not know. So I'm interested in what and where you found the ships list of people into Savannah. I understand that Oglethorpe landed in Charleston about 1732 and moved his group of people overland to GA. Would be interested in looking at the group. Thanks for your time and effort. God Bless. Herb_316@Bellsouth.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Dale E.
