All I had previously was Robert S. Patterson born ~1837 in South Carolina. In his Conf. Army enlistment papers place of birth is listed as Anderson Co. SC. He married in Barbour Co, AL in 1855 and there was a "permission slip" from his father allowing him to marry because he was underage. His father's name is listed a Samuel Patterson. I find the following entry in the 1850 Census The Savannah River Regiment District in the county of Abbeville State of South Carolina. Household 1162 Samuel Patterson 66 m White Hireling born Via (Virginia?), Eula A Patterson 46 f w born SC , William J Patterson 18 m w Hireling born SC attended school, Louisa J 16 f w school , Lucinda C 15 f w school, Robert S 12 m w school, Sarah A 11 f w school Several facts match up and I'm hopeful that this is the right family. Redding, born in Abbeville, South Carolina about 1832. After marrying Mary McCartney of Ireland (Belfast) about 1850, he relocated up to South Bend Indiana before the War. My great-grandmother was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1857...she remembered when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. We have very little information regarding Louis' family. Family legend is that brother fought against brother in the War. There was a family photo album (tintype) with pictures of soldiers. I do not know the names of either Louis' mother or father. However, his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in South Carolina. I assume that when Louis moved to Indiana that his family remained in SC. I do not have any names of his siblings. Of note.....his first child, my great-grandmother, was named Elizabeth Annis Redding....born in 1857....other names of his children: Louis Redding, Jr. Edward Charl! es, Sara, William Ballagh, Mary (minnie), Arthur Jeffries, John. Hope to hear from you. Janis Rozich

Long years ago I wrote to the Abbeville Court House to the person who was in charge of the wills, and asked how much it would cost to have my fellow's will copied. She wrote me back telling me. (No need to tell you how much, it was too many years ago.) I sent a check asking for the copy. It came promptly. We exchanged a few letters. Then, some years after that I had an opportunity to go to the Courthouse and meet her in person. It was a pleasant visit. Gloria Donaldson Wells

Sam and Joseph are the children of Joseph and Agness McCleskey. Old Joseph's will abstract must be incorrect. What other dates are on that handwritten sheet? Just received this and it should be very helpful: 1851, 7 April: Wm McCluskey wrote "my mother left the following children: George, William (myself), Jane, Mary, Joseph and Sarah now living; Samuel died prior to the death of his mother leaving 2 children whose names I do not know; David who died leaving 4 children (Samuel, John, Joseph, and Julia Ann); Elizabeth died leaving Lucinda, Eliza and James N. and John died leaving children but names I do not know." This day personally appeared before me Crockett McDonald, an acting Justice of the Peace for the County, aforesaid Samuel McCleskey who after being duly sworn deponeth and saith, that he is now in the seventy-third year of life, that he is the brother of Joseph McCleskey, late of Lincoln County, State of Tennessee, that they were born and raised in Abbeville District South Carolina that said Joseph McCleskey was a soldier of the revolution and before the final termination of the war (but in what year affiant cannot now recollect), he intermarried with Mary Green of the last mentioned District and State, that said Joseph McCleskey and Mary Green were married according to the then existing laws of said State in relation to marriage. That said Joseph departed this life in the County of Lincoln and said Mary McCleskey his widow who still resides in the said county and State last named, that the said Mary is the identical Mary Green with whom said Joseph intermarried during the revolutionary war, and was never divorced from her said husband during his lifetime. Sworn to and subscribed before Me this 8th day of February 1838 SAMUEL McCLESKEY

Hello, My name is Toni Carrier. I am the founding director of the University of South Florida Africana Heritage Project. Our mission is to rediscover precious records documenting former slaves and to make those records available on a free, public access internet site. Our researchers travel far and wide to transcribe records from archives, libraries and county records, before these are lost to history. Our largest focus, however, is within the genealogical community. We recognize that the majority of the records that mention slaves have actually been discovered by folks researching their own ancestry. So many folks have these records, and wish to share them, and that is where our Africana Heritage Project comes in. Our goal is to be a central home on the internet for any and all records that document slaves. Our website, which will be hosted by Rootsweb (God Love 'Em), is now under construction, and we are accepting submissions from the genealogical community. We are seeking any records that document slaves anywhere in the United States. We cherish our contributors. Please let us hear from you at [email protected] . God Bless! Toni
JoAnn, I saw your inquiry on [email protected] where you mention Donaldsonville of Abbeville District. Do you know where this is? I am looking for Donaldsons in Abbeville. I know they were there because the oldest died there and Administration of his estate is in the Courthouse, but I cannot learn anything about them anywhere - except in the Courthouse. I will appreciate any help you can send my way about where Donaldsonville is located. Gloria Donaldson Wells [email protected]
