Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/GeB.2ACI/954 Message Board Post: SHAKING THE FAMILY TREE.................... BRADFORD males needed for Family Tree DNA We have been fortunate to receive a Grant to start a Bradford Family DNA project. The immediate focus will be to start with at least one representative of the primary lines: Plymouth, MA, Philadelphia, PA, Maryland, Accomack Co., VA, Charles City Co., VA, Fauquier Co., VA and others. This would give us a firm base. The toughest part of starting a DNA project is to obtain enough results to have meaning, thus the reason for the grant is to give us a database of perhaps 10 individuals. After that it will be up to individuals to purchase their own kit. The Details: 1) sign up 2) send lineage, physical address 3) receive kit 4) return kit 5) wait for results. Pricing after the first ten sign-ups, which will be a 12-marker test (or before if you choose): 12 marker Y-DNA test $99: 25 Marker Upgrade $90: 25 Marker Y-DNA test $169. (+ Postage) The website: http://www.familytreedna.com has answers to your questions, as well as explanatory notes. THE PACE SOCIETY's DNA project can be found at: http://pacesociety.org/DNA/. Click on Results. All is not as thought and it is really interesting, several different Virginia lines. On the concern of giving up your DNA - if your insurance person took a swab of your cheek or drew blood, it's a done deal. If you were born after about 1960+ in a hospital, it's a done deal. In numerous ways, it's a done deal. This is secure in that it uses a numbering system - all is explained on the site. The kit comes to you and you return it, the results come to you and to the Project Administrator for analysis and to build family groups. Unfortunately only Bradford direct male descendants are eligible. The ultimate would be to start with individuals who have an idea of their family five or so generations back. The most recent generations would not be used as an identifier. It isn't necessary to have a 'proven' lineage. Representatives of the 'PRIMARY' lines mentioned above are needed to anchor this Project in order for others to add roots to their tree. As the Project increases it is entirely possible to expand the study to identify the areas of origin of our ancestors across the sea, another reason for a substantial base of primary lines. The purpose of the Project would be to identify 'Family Groups' and the common ancestor of each. The Y chromosome is passed from father to son unchanged, except for a mutation about every 500 generations. With the 12 marker DNA results, the numbers can be compared and family groups designated. The conclusions will be available for the benefit of all. If you have an interest or know a Bradford male who would be interested in participating, use the below addresses to sign up or query. C. born 1819. His first born son he named Robert Alexander Simpson. His wife's father was named Alexander for sure so i assume his father was probally Robert . There was a Robert Simpson in in Abbeville in 1820. living next to a John Simpson page 10 tells us that. How ever in 1840 there were more Simpson's there all living in close proximity by one another. In fact there was a J. M. and W. A. Simpson living close to each other page #20. R probally Robert was on page #19 and a William on Page # 24. I am saying there was some type of Realationship there. Just a a chance is possible but not likely.. There is a mistery in my Family as to there begining. There however is a well documented Divorce in 1847 between a Robert and Elizabeth Simpson. I believe this could be this Robert but really not sure could have been another family member. Has any one ever pulled this record? If so what are the names of the Chidren in the paper's . All of these Simpson's may be realated any one have any ideas.? My New E-Mail Address is:: [email protected] Thank You for any input...... Terry Stewart
Dear Mr. Smith: When I awoke yesterday mornimg my intention was to reply to your exciting, informational and well received letter all in response to a one line query. One thing and another seemed to take precedence and the day was done, sooo I want to take this opportunity to express my profound THANKS for sharing your thoughts and sending me BONEDIGGERS postings. As I started to read my heart raced and I wanted to read very slowly to prolong the enjoyment and learning experience-----kind of like eating an ice cream sundy with yummy toppings, you just eat slowly to savor the delicious taste. The reading thereof has generated a plethora of questions. First----let me outline for you who I am and my great interest in it all. My 3rd great grand father John Batte Baird bn 1745 in Va.md Jenny (Jennifer) Jennings abt. 1764 His father was Benjamin and he had a brother Alexander. They were well to do and owned thousands of acres of land both in Va. and in North Carolina ( Anson Co. and Mongomery Co.) They built mills, saw, Grist and lumber. Owned slaves,Were favored by the governor and king.In the HISTORY OF ANSON COUNTY NC 1750-1976 by Mary M Medley. It states in the appendix List of Major James Cottan,s accts. 1776.The claims of the loyalist James Cotton, A major, against the British Govt. for losses in the revolution in the province of N.C..and it lists BENJAMIN, JOHN BATTE and ALEXANDER BAIRD ,MATHEW RAIFORD ,JOHN JENNINGSJ;S( JENNY,S FATHER) AND JOHN SMITH along with others that I suppose are all LOYALISTS. Written by Robert O. Demond "the loyalists of NC during the revolution" Later Benjamim and Alexander and their families went to BAIRDS MILL, in Wilson Co. TN.and some to Ky. just accross the border. BUT,my John Batte went south to 96 district of S.C.where he appears in the 1790 census with his two sons his Alexander ( my great gt. grandfather )and William .They are living on a large plantation and he has 14 slaves. So, I suspect he has been living there for some time.He is still there in 1800 census with his new wife Mary Raiford and their son James Reynolds Baird,This is a second marriage for both John Batte and Mary.John Battedies in 1803. In the meantime his sons Alexander and William along with Jeanette wife of dseceased THOMAS BAIRD 1797 ,a son of Benjamin and brother of John Batte.all living in district 96 S.C.(Abbeville)move across the border into Franklin and Jackson Counties in Georgia. 1799. So--- this is the setting and these are my questions. # 1 Samuel,Aexander.s son, my gt grand father, could write very well and read.( according to a copy of a letter I have)He was bn 1801 in SC,TN, or Ga ?(1850 census says Tn.)Where did he get his education and second his maternal grandmother wasWinifred Elizabeth Patience Smith bn. in Williamsburg S.C. to Abner Smith and Mary Godwin who in turn, were md. in Duplin Co NC. 5 Aug 1780.Are you related? # 3 Samuel supposedly had a sister Mary Polly ,who some say married William F Forncrook of German ancestry. I have never been able to find any Forncrooks in the south,(a couple in NY.)but my family never went up there.BONEDIGGER talks about he strong German Lutheran influence in the area of 96.Sooo ,I wonder ,now, if Mary could have md .one of them. (my spelling of Forncrook may be entirely wrong, just a hand me down) It sure makes sense. But I can find Nothing. # 4 INDIANS --- MY ALEXANDER 1814 joines up with General Jackson at Hog Mountain in Jackson -Gwinette Co. Ga. to fight the indians who had gone on the war path and massacred a great many whites,It appears that he was killed by the indians at some point as he just disappears from all records and not only him but his family(except for Samuel)There should be about seven of them, but NOTHING. Could they have been victims of the massacre as well?Samuel died of yellow fever in New Orleans and left us nothing. History Wars, regulatorsLoyalists,Indians, education all played a big part. You have opened the door into added insight for me. Can you give me any more----Anyone out there? Sincerely Fred Baird [email protected]

May I ask a question? Why would Regulators leave NC and go to Abbeville area---District 96? be one? What if they started out as LOYALISTS? I will have to check my records to see if I have the children of John.
My ancestor was James M. Graham, born 9/29/1837 in Horry County and died before 1912 in either Florida or Georgia (where he may have been living with his son, William). I have James with his parents on the 1850 Horry County federal census. The next time I have him documented is via his Civil War Muster cards showing he fought for Horry County's Company B, 10th Regiment, SCV and then on the 1870 Horry County census having married Amanda Melvina LONG after the war. I've found a James M. Graham, listed as a 20 year old student, on the 1860 Abbeville census, page 88, household #1282 with the family of Samuel Graham. Samuel does not have a James M. living there on the 1850 census (page 143 household # 2183). Samuel's occupation isn't listed in 1850 but he's listed as a farmer in 1860. On every document I've seen, "my" James is listed as James M. This would include an earlier property survey (where he's listed as James Montgomery but the middle name is crossed out to read James M.), later census reports, and his Civil War Muster Cards and Pension request. I've found no other "James M's". Is there anyone working on the Samuel Graham Family? Any speculation as to why my James would be on the other side of the State? Being a farming student doesn't sound quite right for some reason. As far as I know he didn't have an older brother or Uncle named Samuel. Thanks for any thoughts on this. Dow Norfolk, VA

Many Abbeville people later moved to Texas and were involved in the Regulator-Moderator War here c 1839-1845.
Hi Katherine, Saw your message on SC Abbeville this morning and was just wondering if this Adam and Evan Benbow who married into a branch of my SC Green's are related to yours? Might you know where these Benbow's came to SC from? It is said that Aadam's father's name was Richard. I am not sure about Evan's father. (Evan's will at the end) I've had a devil of a time trying to figure out where my Green's and Ross' came to SC from. Loved your Benbow website! Audrey Descendants of Moses Green (son of Isaac Green. I am being educated in a hurry re/ regulators and proceedings prior to the war. It appears many injustices were inflicted upon the REGULATORS by the CROWN. And I suspect in other battles later on. I am an American and and am grateful for this land of AMERICA . I am trying to find my ROOTS.What I have found surprised me. My BAIRDS were LOYALISTS with allegience to the crown. THey had settled in Va. City, Jamestown JOHN BAIRD, Md margaret Rookings, moved to Chippokes Creek in Surry Co. He was a Miller and a millwright(as was my trade)he and his descendants built and operated mills and owned thousands of acres of ground in Va. and North carolina. He was a vestryman for the parish of martins Brandon and held in high esteem by members of his parish. he moved to Prince George co. and was given 521 acres of land that reverted to the crown because they died seized.so the king and the governor helped them in many ways. He was also made justice of the peace for Prince george county. He d. there abt. 1738.HIS SON ROOKowned land at Cabin point mill. His son Benjamin ,called MAJOR BENJAMIN,bn. abt. 1720Prince george co .Va.md sarah batte Jones, a widow, he then moved to Lunenburg, co. Va,Then Mecllen burg Co. was organized and he was commissioned justice of the peace and coroner.THEN guess where he moved ANSON CO NC.Again he built Mills,Lumber ,grist and saw mills.and bought thousands of acres of land.I am glad ,however that he and his families, didn't move there until after the BATTLE OF ALAMANCE.IN 1772-4.M ontgomery co. was then formed and Benjamin was the entry taker.Benjamin had a good number of children three of whom were Sarah, John batte and Alexander,Alexander and Johnn Batte md. Jennings sisters. Now: in this regardsomeone told me to read the book :from albions seed by David hackett Fischer"I read where a large group of immigrants came EARLY to the Jamestown area in Va. Those that came were from the so. west part of england dominated by the Estates of GENTRY. AND CAME TO James city co,Prince george co.etc.It also said that of 101 gentry families that came to America was the Batte and Jennings Families.who the BAIRD family married and that they represented the Rural gentry of england. Then I read in 'THE history of ANSON COUNTY NC 1750 -1976 by Mary L. Medley" in a list of the LOYALIST major James Cottons Accts. 1776.The names of Benjamin Baird,John batte Baird and Alexander baird. Then hard times appeared to fall on them and Benjamin and his familes went to Tenn (Bairds mill) and some to Ky, Others to Abbeville SC. 96 district where John Batte died 1803. His sons William and Alexander moved accross the border into Ga. 1799. I think in NC Benjamin and a John Smith were sent out at one time as SEARCHERS of what?I'm still learning. Now: as I said:I love this country,I am today 80 years old, I have served in the European theatre of action as a machine gunner and Traveled in every state of the union. Thanks for helping me learn a history lesson. Hope to hear more from all you good and great people. Fred
Doris, After 30 years studying all of the above, my conjections are pretty well informed....BTW, at no time did I include Porters or Bairds in this group, I was answering a question directed to me as to why a group may have left and as to who the Regulators were.I see no reason for testiness here. Fred, this is really scarey...#1, I have Beairds in my line...#2 North and South Carolina both had Regulators...a vigilante/like group that florished in the Western part of both states. At issue was the lack of Government in the "outlands". There were no Courts within resonable reach. thus no "justice" to be handed out. These hard working folks were encouraged to be a buffer zone walling out the rough stuff from the good established folks in the eastern sections that had real estate to watch over. Thus, the C.of E. people in the East let those new Presbyterians and Methodists into the Colony to be fodder for the bad guys. They were prayed upon by gangs of the pillage and rape and murder variety. And the Indians frequently tried to wipe them out. As no troops or Courts were present, they up and took care of their own...thus, the Regulators that patrolled and hung their own criminals. There was such a major fuss that Gov Tryon in NC went out to put down the Regulators. Go put the Battle of Alamance on Google and read....Tryon's actions were considered "over the top" even for Royalists and the upshot was...the court system was expanded and some help was offered to bring the wilder elements under control. However...Tryon's actions against what many saw as fine British citizens, in my oppinion led to the Carolinas's being very early into the fray of the Rev War. Tryon began the practice of confiscating the land and property of dissidents. South Carolina was close to run to, near to family left behind, similar in terrain and background of the settlers, and sympathetic to the problems of frontier life. They too had big Regulator actions. And, in my opinion, South Carolina always seems to welcome the sort of people who, if given a multiple choice test, just always seem to select "other' for the dogone right of it! I don't imagine whether they lost their land by confiscation, or sold out to get to a better political climate, many of these folks had much to start on when they left.I know I have folks living in SC, and there is no sign of them in any land records. These people owned land in NC. Prices must have been low in NC when so many pulled out..I suspect they either tennant farmed. or just hired on as labor to someone else. Most of the land here is Royal grant or bounty under the headright system. I don't suppose people who fought against the Crown in NC were likely to pick up bounty land emigrating to SC.I see in old maps some huge holdings in the out in the middle of no where territory up until 1776 when the Royal grants stopped.Sombody had to be working all this land. Many people clearly had land that did not abut...it would take half a day to just get from one field to another....there has to be lots of people here we are not seeing signs of. Georgia was the state that most suffered from "seasoning". ( the time it took for people to adjust to a new climate and it's diseases.) The sapping heat, malaria, water shortages were all hard on the rained-on people of cold England. Many died. Oglethorpe really marketed the land. Please remember. Georgia was never a Colony. It was a Trusteeship. A board of men in England underwrote the entire financial undertaking. No King ever took over GA like happened in VA, and made it a Royal Colony. Oglethorpe, a member of the board, put his money where his mouth was and came over to run the area first hand. No middle man for him. Mosquitos not withstanding. free land to Vets and a lottery for other folks had to be a dream...a new start...a real life...I'd go to GA too. I have absolutely no clue what Searchers were in the Rev War...sounds like a land based pirate on supply duty.Just a guess. As for Loyalists...each state handled the Real property of Loyalists in individual manners. Many states just stripped them bare and schlepped them off on Eng ships. They had auctions and a good time was had by all picking over the spoils. Maryland, for one, did not confiscate the Loyalists' land. I have Loyalist ancestors who never left, though there is a bit of sleight of hand as to who paid the taxes for a while. This isn't always the case though. I suspect Maryland, which thanks to the Chesapeake, was really under the guns of England for many years of the war, always had a large percentage of Loyalists and there was no question of dumping all that land on the market.I really am not sure why MD let it's Loyalists make their own choice.( To leave or stick it out after the war)However, that's a subject to explore another day...I'm getting tired of listening to me.
