I know that Martha (Mattie) Clinkscales married Washington L. Prince. I believe on 10/18/1852. They are buried in Williamston Cem. in Anderson Co. I thought there was another one too, but I guess I was wrong.. However, they are mentioned in a few of the Prince wills also.. In 1840 they are living next to my Hudson Prince and Edward Prince.. As for the Wakefield name.... I haven't a clue where they tie into the Prince line... I am just assuming that it was a family name given to Hudson. I would love to see a copy of that book. Will have to check into getting it on interlibrary loan or something... Maybe the FHL has it. Where did you find it??? Prince names: John Edward George Hugh Hudson Winkfield Sylvanus or Silvanus Thanks again for anything you can find Gerry

(in your list of surnames) I am researching the Prince line, and I know of 2 Clinkscales that married Princes.... Do you have anything on this??? Also, the middle name of my g grandfather, Hudson Prince was Wakefield. They were all living in Abbeville during the 1800s. I always wondered where the Wakefield name came from... A couple more generations back, there was another Hudson Prince that named one of his sons Winkfield. Wasn't sure if Wakefied just changed a bit over the years or if it was a family name somewhere that I wasn't aware of.. Any thoughts???

James Crowther and of course have a family tree back to James Crowther and Mary Hyley. The reason for my query was to try and find a connection between the Rev. James Crowther and the James Crowther who was married to Mary Hyley, which I have been unable to do. I do have lots of data concerning James and Mary and their decendants and would love to share it with you. It would be great to know what information your grandfather may have also. My connection to James and Mary is through my grandfather Kyle Dean Crowther who was the son of James Ibsan Crowther and Janie Elizabeth Pruitt. I have James Ibsan Crowther as the brother of H. Luvinia Crowther who was married to John Daniel Murdock. Richard Crowther Mobile, AL

    2. I have been searching for many years to learn the names of the parents and siblings of Thomas Donaldson who was born 1750/1755, lived in Abbeville 2 Apr 1776 when he enlisted in Rev. Army, and died in Abbeville 1811. That is very little to know about a person, and just about all I know about Thomas Donaldson. I do know he had two wives, Janet Reeve dau of William Reeve RS, and Mary Cook. I know nothing about Mary Cook. Someone said Thomas was from Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina, and that he and Mary Cook were married before he came to Abbeville. Thomas' children were: Nancy Agness, b. 17 Nov 1778 Elizabeth b. 30 Sep 1780 James, b. 22 Dec 1782 William, b. 1 Jan 1785 Thomas, b. 15 Oct 1787 Sally Cook, b. 10 Dec 1793 Rubin, b. 3 Mar 1795 Polly Ann, b. 15 Jan 1797 Daughter, b. 1799 Nimrod, b. 5 May 1802 All children were born in SC, probably Abbeville since they were born after he enlisted in 1776. Most of the children migrated into the Atlanta area in GA by 1830 census. The sons James, William, and Thomas were there a short time, but evidently moved on because they disappeared from the 1840 census. I will appreciate any help you have. I have traveled to Abbeville to try and learn where they lived at least, but to my horror, the deeds burned in 1873, so no way to check that. I have found no list of cemeteries that list Thomas and his wives. HELP!! Gloria Donaldson Wells [email protected]

I am positive the family lived in the Abbeville area but can't find J.A. listed as "J.A." This may be a family name for a John, James or Joseph. He should show up in the 1860 census in that area aged about 10 years and not much older because I don't find him in any of the confederate soldier listings. He had to be at least 8 to 10 years old in 1960 if George was born in 1871. I am doing census searches now. Thank you for the info. Fred

    1. Migration to Alabama from Abbeville Co., SC
    2. William Lindsey
    3. Dee, I've found quite a bit of evidence of the migration of networks of interrelated families from Abbeville-Pendleton Dist., SC, around 1820. My Green family (John Green and Jane Kerr), who moved from Abbeville to Pendleton by 1790, moved to Bibb Co., AL, in 1818. In the Andrew Pickens Papers and the John Ewing Colhoun Papers at the South Caroliniana library in Columbia, I have found letters indicating that Andrew Pickens, first cousin of John Green's wife Jane Kerr (son of her aunt Rebecca Calhoun and husband Gen. Andrew Pickens) also moved to AL around this same time. A 23 Aug. 1819 letter of Andrew Pickens to Capt. Wm. Noble of Abbeville in the Andrew Pickens papers says that Pickens was in Monticello, Jasper Co., GA, returning from "the Alabama" where he had left Jhis brother Joseph, who was intending to go to Tuscaloosa. This letter interests me since the early records of Bibb Co. are filed in Tuscaloosa Co. It suggests to me that these cousins of Jane Kerr Green migrated to AL from SC at the same time as did the John Green family. In addition, a 21 April 1819 letter of Floride Bonneau Colhoun to her son James Edward, in the John Ewing Colhoun collection, mentions that Col. Pickens was to go to "the Alabama" for 2 months. Floride's husband John Ewing Colhoun was a brother to Jane Kerr Green's mother Mary Calhoun Kerr. From all I can gather, a primary motivating factor in this migration was that new lands opened up after the native Americans in AL were defeated and the state opened to settlement in 1816. In addition, the invention of the cotton gin allowed cotton grown in upland areas to be more easily processed. With the new lands opening and the expansion of the cotton kingdom, families were eager to move west and try their luck at making a fortune in the growing edge of the Cotton Kingdom.
