    1. [Old96] HAZEL - Edgefield, Newberry parts of Old 96
    2. Hi, I'm researching the HAZEL family (also spelled HAZLE and indexed as HASSELL, HAGEL, HARLE, HAYLE, HOYLE, HASLE and HASEL) who settled in the area of the Saluda River (both sides) near Maxwell's Neck and the present town of Chappell, SC between 1756-1772. John A. Chapman says they were in the "Scotland" area of Edgefield District as early as 1756, coming with the CULBREATHs from Scotland. But I have found no other record of them there this early so far. Phillip HAZEL had a land grant there in 1772 and Henry HAZEL/HAZLE had one across the river in what is now Newberry about the same time. I don't know how they are connected -- father/son? brothers? Both fought in the revolution in the 3rd SC regiment. I have been trying to sort the descending HAZEL males out to determine which married Anny JOHNSON, daughter of David JOHNSON, who came to Edgefield about 1787 from Lunenburg Co, VA. If anyone is researching the HAZELs (who inter-married with the COXes, ABNEYs, ATTAWAYs, BLANDS, ROGERSes, as well as the JOHNSONs and several other families I haven't identified) I'd love to share information with you.
