Responce to Nancy: What do you know about the John who was the son of Frances Gaines? I am looking for a John Smith who married Narcissa and had a son John Wesley Smith born January 06, 1868, d. November 15, 1937, Richmond Co, Ga. He was possibly born in Lexington Co, SC, but that is not proven. His family may be the one found in the 1880 Greenville Co, SC census as follows: 1880 Butler Township, Greenville Co., SC p. 237D has a family that contains the three known names: Smith, John A. W M 46 head farm laborer SC, SC, SC , Narcissa W F 44 wife keeping house SC, SC, SC , John W. W M 16 son farm laborer SC, SC, SC [the date is off by 4 years with his death cert] , David W M 14 son at home SC, SC, SC None of the family could read or write. Son David is listed as maimed, crippled, bedridden, or otherwise disabled. I figure that the John I need was born 1820s - 1840, depending on whether my John Wesley was the oldest or youngest child. Most of my research is in the Old Edgefield Dist, and later John Wesley Smith and his wife Elmira Short are living in Aiken, Aiken Co., with their children, which included my grandfather age 1. I don't have a Zachariah in my files, but it seems to me that in reading lots of books in the SCDAR library, housed in the Camden ARchives and History Museum in Camden, SC where I live, that I have seen the name Zachariah Smith. I will let you know if I ever find anything reference to him altho I will be slowing down my genealogy a lot with the holidays and my Mother's health. She may be facing surgery for lung cancer in the near future. There should be a special place in heaven or at least some extra stars for those of us who are reseaching the Smith line. And I married a Jones and am doing his as well.
