John McGill was born in Augusta County, VA and died bef. Feb. 1785 in Abbeville County, SC when his estate was administers by his wife Margaret. Margaret was born 1735 in Augusta County, VA. She died November 15, 1820 and is buried at Varennes Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Anderson County, SC. She was first married to Thomas Baskin born 1733 and died 1765 in Augusta County, VA. She and Thomas had two children: 1. Isabella who married Joseph Reid; 2. Mary Baskin. John and Margaret had three children: 1. Elizabeth who married James Thomson; 2. Mary Ann who married John Hamilton; and 3. Sarah Ann who married first Joseph John Pickens, Sr. and second to James Thomson Liddell. It is thought that John was married while still in VA and had three children: !. Samuel who died about 1839. Samuel married Elizabeth Gambrell; 2. Margaret born in 1760 died May 20, 1845 and married Francis Carlile; and 3. Unknown child. Samuel and Margaret were in Abbeville County at least by 1767 when father, John, married Margaret Hartgrove (Baskin). I am trying to prove the connection of John McGill and unknown as the parents of Samuel who is my direct ancestor. A. D. Smith Newberry, SC
