    3. Allow me to say Good morning to all of you looking around in Old 96 for ancestors. Eldon has suggested we repost the names we are researching and I welcome the opportunity to do so. I sometimes think if I could just sit down under the shade of a tree near Thicketty Creek, perhaps near my grgrandfather Jacob Kirby's grave at the old abandoned and neglected Porter Cemetery that I could unravel all the mysteries of my many kinfolks from SC. But this is a formidable task so in addition to names and dates I would like to post some information I have on various families in a series of post in the hopes of connecting with others who are researching the same lines. My grgrfa Richard Monroe Kirby was born 25 Jan 1858 in Spartanburg, exact location unknown. He was the son of Ransom Kirby, br Jan 1835, Spartanburg Co, SC and Peggy "Margaret" Garner, br abt 1835, also believed to be Spartanburg Co. Ransom's father was Jacob Kirby, br 27 Feb 1803 perhaps in VA but died 14 Mar 1880 Spartanburg Co, SC, bur Porter Cemetery a few miles from Gaffney, SC. Ransom's mother was Patsy Lipscomb, br abt 1805, unk and died 18 June 1854, Spartanburg. Her gravesite location is unknown to me. [More about Lipscombs later] Richard Monroe Kirby, age abt 20 and his brother John Calvin Kirby, age abt 15 left Spartanburg Co about 1878 with the Garners, probably William and Sarah Garner and several other families presumably for Texas. The 1880 census for Smith Co, TX, Starrville area shows Richard age 22 living in the home of Mrs. H. M. Bryon; John Calvin, 17, nephew was living with William (age 35 br SC) and Sarah Garner. [More about Garners later] From Civil War letters of Elbridge Littlejohn, it is believed some of the families in the wagon train to Texas may have been LITTLEJOHN, MARTIN, GOFORTH, SPINKS (or SPARKS), JEFFERIES and other GARNERS. Other sources also suggest BARBER, WEAVER, PHILPOT, SEAY, LEE, GATLIN and TUCKER. The relationship between these families is another research project as I am still looking for details including why Sam Jefferies killed Shelton Sparks (one of my grgrgrandfathers in l864 there in Spartanburg to keep him from testifying in another murder case against Sam or one of his brothers. [More about Littlejohn, Sparks and Jefferies later] From the census, cemetery, deed, probate and other records, there must have been dozens of Kirbys in Old96. I believe Jacob Kirby's brothers and sisters were: Abel, Katie, Jonas, Robert, Orman, Eunice, Martha, Mary and Agnes, all of whom were either born, lived or died in and around Spartanburg Co. Richard and John (both of whom came to Texas as single young men) are believed to have left behind their mother Peggy (or Margaret) Garner, thought to be a sister of William Garner, and one brother Willie and two sisters, Agnes and Unk. Their father Ransom Kirby may have been killed in the Civil War in 1864. I will very much appreciate any information on the Kirbys and of course, the Garners, Sparks, Lipscombs or any of the others. And I almost forgot that Peggy Garner, age 15, Wm. Garner age 13 and Joseph Garner age 7 were living with Thomas and Elizabeth Owensby in Union Co, SC 1850 seemingly down the road a ways from Shelton and Rebecca (Stotts) Sparks family. Elizabeth Owensby was only 26 so was her maiden name Garner or Sparks or Kirby or what? Sorry about the lengthy post but I just get absolutely carried away with researching for my kinfolks. Thanks for any help you can give me. Rex Kirby
