I am very interested in any research that you might have of the Greenville Smiths. 1880 Butler Township, Greenville Co., SC p. 237D has a family that contains the three known names I have for my g-grandfather and his parents. Smith, John A. W M 46 head farm laborer SC, SC, SC , Narcissa W F 44 wife keeping house SC, SC, SC , John W. W M 16 son farm laborer SC, SC, SC [the date is off by 4 years with his death cert] , David W M 14 son at home SC, SC, SC None of the family could read or write. Son David is listed as maimed, crippled, bedridden, or otherwise disabled. There is also a probate record for a John Smith, no wife named, in 1890, in Greenville, with a son John W. Smith listed as admr: GREENVILLE., SC March 5, 1890 A Notice appears in the Greenville Mountaineer and Register [Microfilm at Greenville Co. Public Library] State of SC, Greenville C0, March 4, 1890: Petition of J. W. Smith for Letter of Administration of J. H. Smith. To appear 20 March 1890 to show cause why said adm. should not be granted. Did not find an obituary in the preceeding issues of the papers. SPECULATION: Greenville Co. Index to Estate Records "S" 1787-1976 located at Greenville Co. Public Library, Greenville, SC. 53-047, 1890 1890 Administration of one John H. Smith. Copied parts and transcribed below. " State of SC , County of Greenville: I, J. W. Smith do solemnly swear or affirm that John H. Smith, deceased, died without any will, as far as I know or believe, and that I will well and truly administer all and singular the goods.... and pay all his just debts as far as the same will extend, and the law require me, and that I will make a true and perfect inventory of all the said goods.... sworn on the 20th day of Mrch 1890. Signed J. W. Smith." [need to try to find other signature and compare it] Statement of Settlement, estate of John H. Smith: number of shares given as 10. Names listed: J. D. Smith R. S. Smith W. L. Smith J. W. Smith Mrs. Sallie Vendin B. W. Smith J.R. Smith I seem to be missing several names.. need to recheck this at the Greenville Library. 1893 City/Co Directory, Greenville Sc.
