Looking for any information related to the Daniel SMITH (born 2 Jul 1789) who married (1808)Sophia ASHLEY (born 1785). They appear to have had the following children: name DOB Found on: Agnes 30 Jan 1809 (Bible Record & 1850 Census) Richard 17 Aug 1810 (Bible Record) Rebecca 17 Aug 1810 (Bible Record, 1850 & 1860 Census, Sophia's Will) John 7 Jan 1812 (Bible Record, maybe 1850 & 1860 Census) Joshua 7 Jan 1812 (Bible Record) Mary Ann 13 Nov 1813 died 1816 (Bible Record) Charlotte 22 Feb 1816 (Bible Record) Sophia ca. 1823 (1850 & 1860 Census, her mother's Will) Daniel 6 Jan 1824 (Bible Record, 1850 Census, Sophia's Will) The 1850 census of Abbeville District, pg. 83A 1305/1305 shows Sophia Smith aged 65, birthplace unknown, as HH with the following in the household: Anna aged 42 (probably same as Agnes) Rebecca aged 40 Sophia aged 26 Daniel aged 24 Amy aged 22 Polly A. aged 7 Three houses away at 1308/1308 is a John SMITH whom I believe is the John born 1 Jul 1812. Can anyone confirm that this John SMITH who married Jane (ASHLEY) is the son of Daniel and Sophia? If Jane is an ASHLEY, who are her parents? What happened to Richard, Joshua and Charlotte? When Sophia sent her family Bible to the US Pension office in 1845 in support of her mother's widows pension application she stated that the "handwriting of the register is in the handwriting of her husband who is absent, and who has been absent for three years, and his affidavit cannot be secured." From this it appears to me that Daniel SMITH, and possibly the missing children, must have moved elsewhere by about 1842. Daniel may have gone elsewhere before 1840 since he is not on the 1840 Abbeville Census. Where did he/they go? Sophia made a will dated 21 Oct 1853 (recorded 16 Nov 1853)leaving her estate to Rebecca, Sophia and Daniel. On the 1860 census of Abbeville Dist, pg 123B, Rebecca SMITH, now aged 50, is head of a household which contains: Sophia BURTON aged 37 Mary A. BURTON aged 17 "Abbeville District Wills and Bonds", by Willie Pauline Young, pg. 491 has the following dated 3 Feb 1851: "David Russell made gdn. of Polly A. Burton a minor. Sophia Burton showeth that her dtr. Polly Ann Burton is a minor under age and that she is entitled to an interest in a land warrant granted to her father Josiah Burton by the U. S. Government for services rendered during the Mexican War." Are the parents of Josiah BURTON, Josiah BURTON and Sarah OSBORN? What happened to his widow and child? Is the "Bena" or "Beca" BURTON, aged 62, who is living in the household of Willis SHAW in 1870 (1870 Abbeville Census, Lowndesville Twp. pg 280 137/145) the same as the Rebecca SMITH born 17 Aug 1812? If so, what is her relationship to the SHAW Family? On the 1860 census of Abbeville Dist, pg 124A, James SMITH, aged 32, is head of a household which is between Moses ASHLEY and Joshua ASHLEY and contains: Catherine SMITH aged 23 James W. Smith aged 6 Margt. E. Smith aged 3 Does anyone know if this James SMITH is actually James Daniel or Daniel James SMITH - the Daniel Smith who was in his mother's household and aged 24 on the 1850 census? Is James Smith's wife, Catherine, Moses ASHLEY's daughter Catherine, aged 12, who appears in his household on the 1850 census (pg 84B 1321/1321)? This James Smith may be the James SMITH who served in Co "I" of the 19th SCV and died of typhoid fever at High Point, NC 6 Apr 1865. Can anyone confirm or disprove this? The BIG question - where did Daniel Smith, born 1789, come from? Is he related to the Smiths who appear on the 1800 Census of Pendleton Dist. pg. 13: Household 661 = John Smith Household 662 = Daniel Smith Household 663 = Daniel Smith Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
