A book on the Duckworth family in Mississippi includes the following: "About 1820 there was a large immigration from S. C. One caravan of whom I wish to relate mostly from hearsay. there was a man by the name of Benjamin Duckworth. He had a large family .... There were 39 persons in the caravan of movers....George Owens had married the widow Hathron and their family, Nick Hathorn's wife was Betsy Bryant,..." I am looking for the Hathorne family before they arrived in Covington County, Mississippi, about 1820. I believe Nick (Edward Nichols) Hathorne came from Pendleton district but there were Hathornes in Ninety Six prior to the Revolutionary War. Any help on this or related families will be much appreciated. Take Care, Frank A. Holmes Fort Valley, GA.
Hello List, Can anyone give me additional information or tell me where to look for information on the 1820 migration from SC to MS that is mentioned in the message below? Thanks and have a great day! Frank, I have researched the Hawthorne clan for many years and thought that I knew almost every one of them and particularly the ones in the Old Pendleton District, however, I have nothing on Edward Nichols Hathorn/Hawthorn/Hawthorne. In about 1810 (can not be exact without checking the will) Joseph Johnson Hawthorn inherited a plantation from his mother which was located a area referred to as the Old 96th District and I think that he was the first of the clan to settle there. During this time period there were three (3) known Hawthorne Clans living in the area now know as Abbeville County (part of the 96th District). One clan picked up an moved during a mass Presbyterian migration to Preble County, Ohio, and another headed for Alabama, Louisiana and then Texas. The remaining clan stayed primarily in the same geographical area (Western South Carolina and just over the state line into Georgia-around Athens) until the early part of the 1830's. During this time a few of the Hawthorne women married into families that headed into Northern Mississippi which was being opened to white settlers following the signing of the Dancing Rabbit Treaty in about 1834. In 1850 the entire family of Thomas Hawthorn, which included his married children and their families, migrated to Tippah County, Mississippi. This group contained some 11 families and their children. I would really like to find out who this "Nick" Hawthorne was and which of the clans he was connected to. I checked for Elizabeth "Betsy" Bryant but did not find her either. I do have information on the Duckworth line starting with John (b. c1670 in Lancashire, England - d. c1698 in St. Mary's, Maryland) and following the line into Abbeville County, SC. The only John Owens that I have in my dBase was married to Sarah Caldwell and when I checked them out I found that I do not have a listing of their children. The Caldwells and the Hawthornes were neighbors and there is a good chance that the Owen family also lived in the same area. Perhaps if we work together on this we may be able to piece this whole thing together. I hope so, because there is a very good chance that this "Nick" could have been from my clan and I would like to gather as much on him as I can. By the by, if we can connect him I will load you down with information.
