Hi Billie, Thank you for those points. I think the history goes like this and includes the indicated present day counties. If you find this in error please contact me. Here is how the Old 96 District evolved into the present day counties: In 1769 SC had 8 Circuit Court Districts, one was known as Ninety-Six District. Between 1785-1789 eight counties were established within Ninety-Six District: Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenville, Laurens, Newberry, Pendleton, Spartanburg, and Union. Later, labels fluctuated between either Districts or Counties, and additional counties were formed from these. Today, 15 of SC's 46 counties were formed from some part of what was Old Ninety-Six District. The 15 current day counties that were, at least in part, formed from the Old 96 District are: Abbeville, Aiken, Anderson, Cherokee, Edgefield, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, Oconee, Pickens, Union, Saluda, and Spartanburg. I have not set up a gateway (messages posted to that board are automatically posted to this list) but the board is found here: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=an&p=localities.northam.usa.st ates.southcarolina.schist.old96 Eldon mailto:ewade@cfl.rr.com List admin for SC-Old96 Researching: WADE, HAMES -----Original Message----- From: Lee and Billie Jones [mailto:tjones@camden.net] Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2003 10:18 PM To: SC-OLD96-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Old96] District encompases additional lands. The following shows up in all the Old 96th Dist Posts. ==== SC-OLD96 Mailing List ==== This list serves the area that encompasses present day Spartanburg, Union, Laurens, Abbeville, Newberry, Edgefield and parts of Anderson and Cherokee and adjoining Counties along the NC line. It needs to also include: Saluda (1895) , Greenwood (1897), McCormick (1915) and the northern part of Aiken Co, SC (1971) as these counties were formed from the original Old Edgefield Dist, a part of the old 96th Dist. Most folks seem to be focusing on the more northern counties, but these also were a part of the Original Old-96th Dist, and is the area of my research, altho some of my husband's lines seem to have come to GA. from the upper part of the state.
