Trying to find the origins of the HAZEL family who settled in the Saluda side of Edgefield near Mill Creek, Tarpin Creek and Halfway Swamp Creek. Also settled on the other side of the Saluda in Newberry near Goose Pond Creek. Rumored to have been there as early as 1756. Were definitely there by 1772. Later moved to GA, AL, TX, OK. Early HAZELs intermarried with CULBREATHS. Are these CULBREATHs related to the CULBREATHS/COLBREATHS from Halifax and Mecklenburg Cos, VA? Also sorting out JOHNSONs from the same general area -- near Saluda. David JOHNSON came from Lunenburg Co, VA in the late 1780s. One of his sisters married Drury MALONE who also ended up in Edgefield. His sons, Morris, Joshua and Samuel were all in Edgefield as adults in the early 1800s. David seems connected to the RAMSEYs. No idea how. Any clues gratefully received. Happy to share what I have. Barbara
