The book is reprints of newspaper articles fron the Spartanburg Herald- Journal, and copyright 1983 and 1986 by same, published by Band and White, Inc. I bought my copy around 1999 in a store in downtown Spartanburg. Price on cover is $22.95. Legend has it that about 1800, the British ship Sally docked at Charleston and the Captain and purser set out to explore the upper sections of South Carolina. They happened upon a crossroads and the captain (unnamed) liked the area and set up camp. The purser traveled about another 5 miles and set up his own camp on a knoll. The captain and purser rejoined each other a few days later and vowed to return and settle at their respective sites. They did return an build homes. The captain names his Cross Anchor. The purser names his Cross Keys. The captain's home burned down in 1932. The purser's home still stands (November 27, 1981 -- date of article). The Cross Keys house is identified as built by Barrum BOBO by the Cherokee District of the Daughters of the Confederacy (plaque placed by them). There is a picture og Cross Keys home, Spartanburg Herald-Journal photo. Caption says there is a stone just below roof peak engraved with crossed keys and the date 1812 beneath it. Some old names identified to Cross Anchor area in article are Hays and Lambright (both before 1800) and Dillard (about 1860). A 1924 Cross Anchor H.S. track team photo identifies Roy Starns, John Welsh, Algie Bobo, Dan Yarborough, Welch Hollis and their coach L. B. Templeton, Jr. Hope this info is helpful. Jack Keller in Maryland. (Sims and Harris connections in Union and Spartanburg Counties)
