The following info. is from the web site http://66.25.20.212 Ray Porter 832.453.6056 rporter6@houston.rr.com He gives the following info. on the father of Edgefield Co, SC's John Cogburn who married Hannah [Harry]. _________________________________________ Michael Cockburn 1720 - 1768 Not much is known about Michael Cockburn, except the few records we have been able to find in North Carolina. However, from records of two of his sons we know the Cockburn family was in Virginia from about 1745 until at least 1750. One son states he was born in the "neighborhood" of George Washington in the year of 1749. Thus between the years of 1750 and 1764 we don't know where the Cockburn's lived. May 15, 1764 Michael Dixon, grantor to Michael Cockburn, grantee, 93 acres no witnesses Orange Co., NC Register of Deeds 1752-1768 Nov 1764 Hugh Barnett, Paul Harrelson, Paul Ham, Burges Harrelson, Garrett Guttery, Edward Chambers, Michael Cockburne & Wm. Chambers, Jr, and that Burges Harrelson be appointed Overseer of the Road leading from Mayo's to Hico ford and that Thomas Douglass be Overseer of that part leading to Granville line. Orange Co., NC Court, p. 248. 1 Apr 1768 Sarah Miles swears before Jho Pryor that the land and plantation where he ( Michael Cockburn) did live, Michael Cockburn lent to his wife for her natural life and then gave it to his son Henry Cockburn and his heirs and that five shillings Va money he gave to John Cockburn. 1 Apr 1768. William Miles Jun. swears before Jho Pryor that Michael Cockburn lent to his wife Mary Cockburn for her life the land then it to go to son Henry and he gave John Cockburn 5 shillings cash. 1 Apr 1768. Proved by oath of Mary Cockburn. Caswell Co., NC Deed Book A This record indicates a couple of things about the Cockburn's. One, Michael had died by 1768, and two, it suggests John was not only the oldest son, but was also the prodigal son. It is known from South Carolina records, John was already established in Edgefield County by 1768. 14 Aug 1775 John Cockburn of Granville Co, now in Ninety Six District of SC to Henry Cockburn of Orange Co., NC, 97 ac on east side of Gents Cr a branch of Hico and part of a larger tract Cockburn purchased of Michael Dickson by deed in Orange Co. of 4 Aug 1764. wit: James Cockburn, Michael Cockburn. 14 Aug 1775 Caswell Co., NC Deed Book A, p.34. John had apparently bought land from Michael Dickson which was unrecorded in Orange County records. What's interesting is the witnesses. This record suggests there may have been another son named Michael. The other possibility is the sale took place before Michael died, he was a witness of the sale, and the sale was recorded later. Known children of Michael and Mary Cockburn: John Cockburn of Edgefield County, South Carolina. Henry Cockburn of Union County, South Carolina. James Cockburn of Greenville County, South Carolina. He has links on his page to the known children above. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright@2002 by Ray Porter.
