    1. [Old96] Old 96 District vs 96 District
    2. Pat Childers
    3. I apologize for posting a little late, but I have been hospitalized and I am trying to catch up on my old emails. I think part of the confusion comes from Old 96 District vs 96 District. Old 96 was formed in 1769 and once included land from 15 different counties. I posted a list of these in an earlier post, but will be happy to do so again. Many of the original counties were later divided so the number involved grew. Some of these counties only had parts of their land included in Old 96. Abbeville Aiken Anderson Cherokee Edgefield Greenville Greenwood Laurens McCormick Newberry Oconee Pickens Union Saluda Spartanburg These along with a map (and the date the counties were established) are included in Reflections: History and Memories of Old 96, Researched and printed by my Old 96 History Class. 1. [Old96] WEED Family of SC
    2. Bettie Pacynski
    3. Hello, I am searching for information on the Weed Families of SC. Particularly a John Weed b unk married Rebekah (?) b unk who had a son Andrew J. (Jackson) Weed b 1817 and a son John Christian Weed. My brick wall is that I need to know when this John Weed was born and who his father was. I am trying to make a connection between "my" John Weed and the John Weed who came to SC from CT/NY and was the brother of Reuben Weed, sons of Samuel and Sara Weed. This would make my line complete from John/Jonas Weed to myself. Any help would be appreciated. 1. [Old96] WOODSON, Union District late 1700's-early 1800's
    2. Robert Woodson was born in Virginia in 1744, died in Union Dist. SC in 1809. His son, Green Woodson was born in Union Dist in the 1790's and married a distant cousin named Nancy Woodson b. 1795 Union Dist. SC. This couple migrated in the 1840's to Gibson County TN where Green Woodson died 4 Nov 1844 leaving Nancy with 1 grown child and 3 minors. I have some notes I made about this family while researching in Spartanburg Library's Gen room but can't lay my hands on them at this time. I'll post them at a later date. One of the sources, I believe it was Upper Edgefield Baptist Church records, recorded several members of this family being reproved for non-attendance! Kathryn Sterling Herrmann Hendersonville, NC

    1. [Old96] BOWEN, MARTIN, GARRETT, FINLEY, CROW, RIDDLE=LAUREN'S COUNTY
    2. Ken and Margie Hartman
    3. My family came from the Durbin Creek portion of Fountain Inn, on the Lauren's/Greenville County Line. I also believe they came from around Warrior Creek area. They were affiliated with the Baptist Church in those two areas. I know that Raleigh Bowen was in the area in 1758, maybe earlier. I know a lot about the Bowens, Minerva Martin Bowen was the daughter of Henry Martin. My mom thought that her mother was an Ann Garrett. I believe her to be from the Germanna, Virginia Martins (no proof) but she was black dutch. I only know grandmother names for Crow and Riddle. Finley was said to have been raised by an old couple, that his mother gave him the family name of Finley as she was unmarried and died in his early years. margie fenley (changed in spelling in Arkansas) hartman.

    3. For the person who was looking for subject surnames in S.C., you might try checking the Carmichael line. Thomas Jackson Dempsey, Sr. married Bertha Beatrice Carmichael on Apr. 20 1910; both of them were born in Jackson, Ga. Their children were: Ernestine Frances, Robert Thomas, Thomas Jackson III, Emily Irene, Anne America, Ambrose Franklin, Alvin Hugh, Bertha Jane, Lee Durant, and Lollie Mae. Richard Cantrell married Mary Carmichael on Oct. 13, 1850, Washington Co., Ark.

    1. [Old96] Cantrell, Dempsey
    2. Hi Shirley! I am a Cantrell whose family migrated to the Spartanburg area in the late 1700's. The family were in New Castle, PA (now DE), then removed to the Orange Co, VA then to Orange Co, NC which is present day Rockingham Co, NC, I believe. I am not up on my county changes. The lines in Spartanburg mainly descend from two brothers: John and Isaac. Both men had rather large families (over 20 children each) which most Cantrell's in the United States descend from. From Spartanburg Co, the Cantrell descendants spread all over the country and we now have Cantrell's in virtually every state. Which line do you descend from? I am out of Isaac through his son, Reuben. Then, Samuel Cantrell>Thomas Cantrell>Alfred Cantrell>Elliott Cantrell>my father>me. My Cantrell's left Spartanburg and went up into Rutherford Co, NC. Then, over to present day Transylvania Co, NC. I would be interested in hearing about your Cantrell line. I also perhaps have a Dempsey line through Sarah Dempsey and Daniel Murphree of Bertie Co, NC. Their descendants moved into the OPD in the late 1800's and have since spread around the country also. 3. Someone was interested in JOHN GORMAN and, at the time, I could not locate him. I have the info now so will post it and hope they see it! JOHN SPRAGGINS GORMAN born abt.1770 in Edgefield county, S.C. and died before 1820 in Warren County, GA. Father was JOHN GORMAN and mother HANNAH SPRAGGINS. He married NANCY FLUELLEN GIBSON born abt. 1779 in Warren County, GA. They were married December 20, 1794 in Warren County, GA. and I have one child listed, there probably were more children. The one listed is SARAH GORMAN born abt. 1805 in Gwinnett County, GA. Hope this helps someone! Marty

    3. Betty, We don't have to go back 200 yrs for stuff like this. Back in the 1930's when I was growing up in the country on an oil lease (camp) if someone caught something contagious like smallpox, the Health Dept. came and nailed a sign on the front door, warning everyone to stay away. Kids in the household could not go to school and you had to stay put. Somehow, I think, even today, this dosen't seem like a bad idea. Wanda

I have a couple of wills that might be earlier than you have, but hold them for future reference. Those lines of mine are all found up around the Ninety Six area of Greenwood Co., so it is possible they were in early Abbeville Co., since Greenwood took a portion of Abbeville and Edgefield Co. when it was formed in 1897. Sorry these don't have your names in them, but maybe someone will see these and your data, and be able to connect them for both of us. Brenda, I am a May desc., but don't have the Mays showing up in my line. _________________ Estate of JOHN WAITE, Dec'd. 2. BEVERLY NELSON
    3. Hi, Wendy, I am going to send this answer to the whole list to share with anyone else who may have additions, corrections, or input on these families. The James Allison/Ellison will written in 1778, probated in 1784 names his children & some of the grandchildren. Isabella Ellison was married to John Casey. I use a working circa birth date of c1751 for her. Elizabeth was married to William Casey. (This marriage and data on the family from Shelia Creek of Beauford, Ga., quoting family records.) John Casey was the son of Jesse and grandson of Abner with William his brother. Jesse Casey was supposed to have been born c1726 in Maryland. Children of John b c1750 & died 1816 in Spartanberg) will probated 1 July 1816) & Isabella b c1751 & died after 1816: Joseph, Moses, Jesse, Allison, Jenny (m Jonathan Crow), Susanna, Mary and Casander. Joseph was named in his grandfather's will. Children of William (b 1755 & died 1828) and Elizabeth (b c1756): James, Jean (mWIlliam Stone) Randel (m a Couch) Moses, Robert (DId he have a daughter Sally who married Watson Ellison Lynch in Claiborne County, TN???), a dau. who married Benjamin Sherbert, Jesse, Isaac (m. Dicey Henderson) Aaron, Betsy (m William Harris), Mary (m Reuben Harris), Uriah, Susan (m Casey Crow), William Jr., John. James was named in his grandfather's will. There is some info on the Casey family in Sharon Doliante's book, Maryland & Virginia Colonials, gving background of Levi Casey, brother to Jesse. She says Levi was born in Virgina. I hope this helps you sort out your Caseys. Bev Nelson ----- Original Message ----- From: Stampnqueen@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2002 5:01 PM To: bandbnelson33@msn.com Subject: John and William Casey I read your message about the Ellison family on the Old 96 list. I hit a brick Wall with the Casey family a long time ago and was so glad to see your post. Can you tell me anything about John and William Casey? I have two generations of brothers named John and William Casey, but I am not sure of the dates we are talking about. Do you have dates on them or dates on their Ellison wives?? I have a William Casey (no dates) and no wife listed has sons John and William both born between 1800-1805....all in Edgefield Co. area which was then the old 96 district. John had two sons William and John Lucian, one born 1839 and the other 1840. All of these men died young around the age of thirty. I look forward to hearing from you, Wendy Leon
