This was sent to me because it has the Edgefield Co. reference. I don't know anything about this line, but thought I would post it just in case someone else could use it. It would seem to me that there may have been two completely different set of Messer families in Carter County. My Messers that went to Carter County from Knox County and before that they were from Edgefield County, South Carolina. I wonder if the Jacob Messer and Nancy Colburn you speak of that came from South Carolina was a brother to my John Messer. Do you know if this last Jacob is a son of James Messer b. 1735 died 1784 in Edgefield County, South Carolina or at that time known as District 96? I have just finished photographing and indexing and annotating the Horsley Cemetery in Carter Co. Been working on this project far longer than I thought I'd be. (And hopefully in the near future I'll be able to learn how to get all this to the Carter Co. web site !!) Life has been busy, and I've just gotten into church records in Germany on my husband's lines. What a treat!!!! So have spent a lot of time on the Raker and Obertate lines(Carroll Co., KY) Frank, 1874 - 1953, and Pearlie (COLLIER), 1882 - 1966, MESSER are buried in Horsley Cemetery. Horsley Cem. is also called Rock Springs. and Greenup Co. calls it the Zornes Cemetery. Frank is the son of Jacob, 1846 - 1925, and Mary E. (McGUIRE) Messer. Jacob is the son of Jacob Messer, b. South Carolina, and Nancy COBURN. Mary E. 1853 - 1927 is the daughter of James McGUIRE and Elizabeth HANEY. Pearlie (Collier) Messer is the daughter of Newton Collier. Children of Jacob and Mary E. Some of the information came from death certificates in Kentucky, other info from local people in Carter Co. Let me know if your dates and info don't add up to what I have. The "Floyd" families were very numerous in the Mullins, S.C. and surrounding areas, to include Darlington, in the 1900s.
Thanks to all who sent me suggestions for research areas. Since I only have 1 day (Friday) I think I will start out with the Greenville Library. Hopefully I'll find lots of clues to my Meredith lineage. Thanks again, Barb in GA

Hi, I am still seeking information on Jeremiah Hubbard's early days. He was in the area in 1786 as he is listed as witness to a land sale. I am looking for his parents and where they came from before Old 96. Also, I am seeking information on the Levi N. Robins who once owned a piece of land originally granted to Ruben Pyles. According to a deed dated 1810, the sheriff seized the land from him for payment of debt and Jeremiah purchased it at auction. There were two other Levi N. Robins in later years, one born in 1812 and one born in 1852. The elder of the two is son of Albert and Susannah Norton Robins the younger is son of Abel and Rachel King Robins, all of the Pickens District. I would like to see if there is a connection between the elder Levi and the two younger ones. Thanks, Lauren Richardson
Can someone please send me RnBFloyd's e-mail address? I must have copied it down wrong! Thanks in advance, Marty

I feel these are old historical books and you can only obtain them, many times, through large libraries or ones that are within the Old 96 locality, that folks all over the USA cannot go out and purchase these old books, and many times they are out of print. I have several books that have been reprinted several times over the past 100 yrs. If this can help someone in areas where they have only small libraries and do not have many books on SC (such as folks in Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, etc), I would be happy to look up something for them. Over the years, many, many folks have helped me with giving me information that came out of our of print books, or rare books that I feel a bit obligated to do the same. Since, no copyright clause is written in this 90 year old history book, I will continue until someone who has a family or legal interest this books request that I stop doing lookups. Johnnie, They object because it effects the marketability of the book. I have the same problem with mine. I am willing to do a look up in my book so that the buyer won't have to buy something that is useless. I don't give out specific information but will tell the interested party if the name is there or not. This has worked well for me but some people still try to give all the info out of the book and thereby negate the sale. These books are self published and cost a great deal, both in time and money. Believe me, there is no profit. You do well to pay for the publishing with nothing for the time. The love of history and genealogy has to be the reward. It also takes a lot of time to do look ups but I would rather have a happy customer. Having said that - if anyone would like a look up under the above conditions, my book is "Abstract Henderson County NC Estate Records 1838 - 1900" Kathy Summers ----- Original Message ----- From: "Johnnie Nivens" <jnivens2@carolina.rr.com> To: <SC-OLD96-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 02, 2002 12:05 PM Subject: RE: [Old96] old 96 Bible look up OFFER > I think as long as you are not give too much information, they should not > object. I am looking for any clue to the birth, parents, and siblings of Dicey Malone, b. about 1805. Some say she was born in Edgefield Co. but I have not found anything on her in any Edgefield material. She married George W. McGraw who was born @ 1812 in SC. They moved to Alabama and had 14 children. I have the names of 11 of them. Any information on Dicey MALONE will be most appreciated. I am considering a research day this Friday but I don't know where the best place to research for the Old 96 area info. My family migrated through that area in the late 1790's early 1800's. I will be coming from the Atlanta Ga area. Any suggestions? Thanks, Barb
Thank you Tim. I have Sharne Doliante's book and did find Eleanor Pickens information about her marriage to John Prather (no source cited). The book also makes mention of Robert Pickens, mostly in land transactions with John Prather. But those two are the only Pickens' mentioned in her book. Other information about Pickens ancestry appeared in the OPD-database CD that I bought in January of 2000. However I could not find "sources cited" for any of that information. Bill Lindsey has offered information about the Pickens line. I am hoping he can cite sources for me. It is so nice to see a group help other researchers. Berry of the Deed Book 27, p. 245, 3 February 1806?) ..... 2 Patsy GORMAN m SCOTT ..... 2 Claborn GORMAN Can you help me sort them? Which children belong to Hannah Spraggins? I know that the 1790 census gives the following; John Gorman 2m 16+ , 2m <16, 2 females , 5 slaves - so he had 3 sons and 1 daughter by 1790, while married to Hannah Spraggins. He married NANCY FLUELLEN GIBSON born abt. 1779 in Warren County, GA. They were married December 20, 1794 in Warren County, GA. and I have one child listed, there probably were more children. The one listed is SARAH GORMAN born abt. 1805 in Gwinnett County, GA. > Hope this helps someone!
