    3. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_00C4_01C294B7.8A66BCB0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit This is only for those people that have had trouble getting to this informantion........... This announcement of free viewing of the 1790, 1800, 1810, 1870, & 1890 census has been posted on some of the list that I subscribe to and quite a few people have advised that they have had problems getting to the census info. Since many of our fellow researchers are rather new at operating computers, I thought that I would list the following steps one should take to gain access: Step #1 http://librarycommission.lib.wv.us This takes you to the WEST VIRGINIA LIBRARY COMMISSION home page. Step #2 This is the home page for the WEST VIRGINIA LIBRARY COMMISSION Right under the word "WELCOME" you will find a hyperlink called Fall 2002 Database Trials Web Page you will need to click here and this will take you to the next page. Step #3 This takes you to a page called NEW DATA BASE TRIALS ANNOUNCED: Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the hyperlink titled: HeritageQuest: http://trials.proquest.com/proquest/servlet/TrialsController?&userid=66861 (click here) Password: welcome Trial expires: 12/31/02 This online database is an important collection of unique material for genealogical research. Step #4 You should now be at the PROQUEST TRIALS PAGE and under the gray GENEALOGY BANNER click on HeritageQuest Online Step #5 You should now be at the HeritageQuest home page where you can click on either CENSUS or BOOKS. Understand that this site is very, very busy and will be very slow.......... so don't give up as long as your browser is searching for information. Another hint is that if you want to print out a census sheet you should select the "100% option" on the census page and then switch your printer into "landscape" mode. I would also adjust the "header" & "footer" settings to their wides settings so that you can print the entire page. 1. [Old96] 300 Citations for Walkers of South Carolina
    2. Hello South Carolina and other Walker researchers: I have uploaded a Walker research database containing about 300 citations to documents concerning the various Walker families of South Carolina about 1770-1815.  These citations have been gathered over the past couple of years by Frances Bateman, Martha Easter, John Rountree and me as we have searched for the correct family for our Samuel Walker, Revolutionary Soldier of Edgefield. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/u/s/Judith-F-Russell/index.html After you click on the file to open it you can use your browser's FIND capabilities (type Cntl F) to search for names, landmarks, cities, whatever. You can use the FIND technique on any of the files -- there is a Walker/Bell annotated bibliography as well as several other primary documents. Remember, though, this is a draft research document and should be used as a basic for tracking down the original documents.. As always, your comments are most welcome.  We are very interested in hearing from other researchers concerning the Walker families of Edgefield, SC. 1. [Old96] Marriage records for the 1780s.
    2. Eldon Wade
    3. Howdy Folks, First let me apologize if you receive more than one copy of this message as I am cross posting. I am seeking advice on where I may find a marriage record (express or implied) for an Edward WADE b. 1760 VA who m. Nancy Ann (surname unknown) about 1780. The marriage could have taken place in the SC Old 96 District, NC, KY, or even VA. In 1790 they are on the Old Pendleton Dist SC census with 3 sons and 2 daughters. Since all the children are under 16 in 1790 and in light of Edward being b. 1760 I am estimating the marriage date being about 1780. Edward is the son of Edward WADE and wife Mary CLEMENTS and I know a great deal about this family but I want to establish Nancy Ann's maiden name. It is a possibility she is a BURFORD (BUFORD, BEAUFORD, etc.). Records often spell Edward's surname as WAID or WAIDE in addition to the common spelling of WADE. Any suggestions on where I might find a record of the marriage of Edward WADE and Nancy Ann would be very appreciated. Thank you, Eldon mailto:ewade@cfl.rr.com List admin. for SC Old 96 Researching: WADE, HAMES

    1. [Old96] Smiths in Abbeville
    2. William Lindsey
    3. Nancy and A.D., This is a long shot, but would you have any idea of the background of an Eliza Jane Smith b. abt. 1790? Abt. 1815, in Plaquemines Psh., LA, she married Samuel Kerr Green, who was b. in abt. 1790 in Pendleton Dist., SC. Samuel was the son of John Green and Jane Kerr of Abbeville Co., SC, and Jane was daughter of Samuel Kerr and Mary Calhoun. The given name Ezekiel runs in my Green line, perhaps because Mary's parents were Ezekiel Calhoun and Jane/Jean Ewing, but I wonder if there is also a Smith connection to the given name. Samuel Kerr Green and Eliza Jane Smith named their first (and only son) Ezekiel S. Green. Could the S. have been for Smith? Samuel K. Green came to LA abt. 1817, probably with cousin James Edward Colhoun, a naval officer whose father's plantation adjoined that of John Green and Jane Kerr in Pendleton Dist., SC. James was son of John Ewing Colhoun and Floride Bonneau. In a case filed by Ezekiel S. Green vs. his father Samuel in 1857 in LA, a witness testified that Samuel Kerr Green and Eliza Jane Smith were distant cousins, and that Samuel K. Green's family had raised Eliza Jane, whose mother was related to Samuel Kerr Green's family. Any clues in your Smith research that would fit this pattern? If the information in the 1857 case is correct, then Eliza Jane Smith would appear to have roots in Abbeville Co., SC. Will appreciate any information. I am looking for a John Smith who married Narcissa and had a son John Wesley Smith born January 06, 1868, d. November 15, 1937, Richmond Co, Ga. He was possibly born in Lexington Co, SC, but that is not proven. His family may be the one found in the 1880 Greenville Co, SC census as follows: 1880 Butler Township, Greenville Co., SC p. 237D has a family that contains the three known names: Smith, John A. W M 46 head farm laborer SC, SC, SC , Narcissa W F 44 wife keeping house SC, SC, SC , John W. Son David is listed as maimed, crippled, bedridden, or otherwise disabled. I figure that the John I need was born 1820s - 1840, depending on whether my John Wesley was the oldest or youngest child. Most of my research is in the Old Edgefield Dist, and later John Wesley Smith and his wife Elmira Short are living in Aiken, Aiken Co., with their children, which included my grandfather age 1. I don't have a Zachariah in my files, but it seems to me that in reading lots of books in the SCDAR library, housed in the Camden ARchives and History Museum in Camden, SC where I live, that I have seen the name Zachariah Smith. I will let you know if I ever find anything reference to him altho I will be slowing down my genealogy a lot with the holidays and my Mother's health. She may be facing surgery for lung cancer in the near future. There should be a special place in heaven or at least some extra stars for those of us who are reseaching the Smith line. And I married a Jones and am doing his as well. 2. Nancy or Warren, In your research, have you found JEREMIAH SMITH, b. ca. 1773 in SC. He had twin daughters, RHODA and ROSANNA, born in Newberry Co in 1824. One of these daughters married Corbin Nelson in Habersham Co, GA in 1843. It seems the family moved to Cherokee, AL ca. 1840. Children of Jeremiah/Mary Unknown in my research may be: Jeremiah Smith Jr., John B. Smith, Peggy Smith, Luke Smith, Henry L. D. Smith, Rosanna "Rosey" Smith, Rhoda Smith, Joel D.(R.) Smith. Also in 1850 Cherokee census included in his household were Julia A. Smith, Littleton Smith, Thomas Smith. Also, associated closely with this Smith Family are Polly Smith b. ca. 1812 and Joel Anderson Smith b. 1854. I visited Newberry and found Jeremiah Smith on the estate sale records of Adam Tidmore (1808) and Adam Thomas (1805). Other Smith's included: William, Moses, Matthew, and Stephen Smith. In the will of Mathew Smith of Newberry, he named sons Luke and Lyttleton. ID: 186765 on RootsWeb WorldConnect Project names Jeremiah Smith b. abt 1780 in SC m. Mary Tidmore in Pickens Co, SC. Any information or leads on Jeremiah would be appreciated. He is my "brick wall." Gail
