    1. [Old96] Buckelews, Buckalews, et al, in Old 96th
    2. Les Buckalew
    3. I'm new to this list. My ancestors were in Old 96 at the time of the American Revolution. Please find below a sampling of my notes concerning my Old 96th ancestors. It's thought that I have the largest Buck?lew (all spellings included) genealogy file in existence, and I shall be glad to correspond with anyone who has an interest in this line and others with which the Buck?lews interacted. The latest update for my Buck?lew file may be found at <http://www.geocities.com/~buckalew>. Les Buckalew :o) NOTES: 1787 Nov. 26- Edgefield Co. Deed Book 2: 1787-1788. 26 Nov. 1787. James Buckelew to John Still, both of Ninety-Six Dist. SC for 50 pounds, sold 182 acres on branch of Little Stephens Creek, being part of 500 acres originally granted 14 Aug. 1772 to Richard Buckelew and his decease fell to his son and heir, George Buckelew, who conveyed to said James Buckelew, adj. Christopher Ward. Signed by James Buckelew, Rachel Buckelew. Wit: Christopher Ward, Ogden Cockcroft, who swore by oath 14 Apr 1788 before Arthur Simkins, J.P (This was a deed of grant and release. the actual deed was the next day, 27 Nov. 1787.) 1775: The first major battle of the Revolution was fought at the Old 96th Courthouse, in the area in which Buckalew families lived. The families seemed to have been divided between the Patriot and Loyalist causes, however. Garrett, George, Richard Sr. and Jr., John, Frederick and William, all gave service time in one or the other. 1778 and 1779: Richard and Garrett Buckelew served as Petit Jurymen at the 96th Dist. Courthouse. Richard also served on the Grand Jury there at that time. 1779 Ninety-six Dist., SC: Name spelled Buckaleu. 1785, 3 Jan., Deed: "George Bucklue, Planter, to William Green, Planter, both of 96 District, SC, 50a being part of a tract surveyed by William Anderson, D.S. 02 June 1772 and certified 17 June 1772, entered in Auditor Generals office 09 October 1772 and granted 14 Š 1772 to Richard Bucklue being now dead and said George Bucklue, his son, became heir at law; said tract on Little Stephen's Creek of Savannah River adjacent Ogden Cockeroff, Richard Buckelew, dec'd, now belonging to said George Buckelew, James Bucklue, Garret Bucklue; signed George Buckelew, Mary (X) Buckelew; witnesses: Azariah Lewis, Efphama (+) Buckelew, Ogden Cockeroff, who swore 31 March 1789 before Arthur Simkins, JP; recorded 26 June 1793. ( Deed Book 8, p 229-235 )." Specifically calls George a son of deceased Richard, and mentions land that is bounded by the land of James Buckalew and Garrett Buckalew. A court record in Loudoun Co., VA, had already established this relationship between Richard and George.

    1. [Old96] Nathaniel Robertson/Amanda Blakely
    2. Ted and Freda Noble
    3. I have been searching for info about my ggggrandparents for a long time. Nathaniel and Amanda Blakely Robertson lived in Laurens County, S. C., in the late 1700's...maybe earlier. They had at least two sons William and Francis. William married Elizabeth Bonner and moved to Butler County, Alabama, about 1814, with their three sons Nathaniel, John and Tyre or Tye. Would like so much to find info about them in South Carolina. 1. [Old96] Researching: PALMER, SHIPP, CALDWELL, TURNER, ROBERTSON, KUHN, FANNIN/FANNON
    2. I am researching the following families: PALMER/PALMORE: The Palmers/Palmores evidently came from Virginia to the upper Old 96th District after the Revolutionary War. There were a few Palmer families that were in the Pendleton District and remained there after Anderson and Pickens Counties were created from the Pendleton District. My grandmother, Nancy Elizabeth Palmer, b: 1853, Townville, Anderson Co., SC. She married William A. ROBERTSON, b: abt 1848 in Franklin Co., GA. After the Civil War, they moved to Gregg County, TX. She was the only child James W and Rebecca Jane Palmer. James was died at Point Lookout, MD, Prison at the very end of the Civil War. James W. Palmer's parents were Chandler Palmer and Martha Thomas Palmer. I am stuck in knowing who was Chandler's father. There were so few Palmer's in the Old Pendleton District. Some believe, with no proof, that Jesse (shown in Pendleton) was Chandler's father. However, the name Jesse was never carried down in this family, and allows me to believe that possibly some other Palmer was the father. I understand that there was a Quaker church in the Old Ninety-Six District, and it moved and the whole congregation followed to Ohio or Indiana. In grasping for straws in my search, I wonder if his father could possibly be a member of that church that moved. When I was a child, we visited my aunt's home and looked at pictures and the women had large white collars and their hair was pulled up on top of their heads. It seems that some had on a white bonnet. They looked different from what we had ever seen. ROBERTSON: My grandfather, William A. Robertson, from Franklin Co., GA, not far from Anderson Co., SC where my grandmother was from. I would like to find out from anyone that has his name in their line. His parents were: Henry W. Robertson, b: ca 1823, NC wife: Catherine B. Clark, b: ca 1828, Franklin Co., GA (d: abt 1851) Issues: William A. Robertson, b: ca 1848, GA, d: 1900, TX Samuel Robertson, b: ca 1849, GA (d: abt 1851) John Wiley Robertson, b: ca 1851, GA I have been unable to find an instrument that ties Henry W. Robertson with the other Robertson's that are in Franklin Co., GA or in SC. I did, however, find some genealogies that had a Henry W. Robertson, son of John Robertson and Susannah Webb. I would like to know if there is someone else that is researching this line and would make contact with them. This line ties into the James "Horseshoe" Robertson line, according to the genealogy that I found. I had almost forgotten my Fannin/Fannon line. My Swiss ancestor from Orangeburgh County, SC, married Mary Fannon/Fannin/ing. My gggg grandfather, Lewis Kuhn, married Mary Fannon after the Revolutionary War. I had set her line aside, however, I would automatically look at Fannin's when I researched other lines. Recently, I pulled out the folder that I had accumulated info over the years and realized that the only Fannin/Fannon/Fannings in SC were in Orangeburgh Co., SC, and that was where the ancestors of the famous JAMES FANNIN who fought and died in the Texas Revolution was from. I had info that the original Fannin that came to SC lived and owned land in Cherokee Co., SC. James FAnnin died at Goliad, but had fought along with Gen. Sam Houston and David Crockett. Of course, in Texas, the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of Goliad were an important part of our history. Anyone researching the Fanning/Fannin/Fannon family? Would like to hear from anyone that might suggest another place to look. Betty

    3. Hello Folks, Our list with it's 366 members continues to thrive as one of the largest lists on Rootsweb. Our members are among the most knowledgeable researchers on the Internet. Take advantage of these 366 genealogical resources by posting your queries and requests for assistance. Some of you may not know that there is a message board for the Old 96 District. I have not set up a gateway (messages posted to that board are automatically posted to this list) but the board is found here: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=an&p=localities.northam.us a.states.southcarolina.schist.old96 For those who have joined our list recently here is a summary of how the Old 96 District evolved into the present day counties: In 1769 SC had 8 Circuit Court Districts, one was known as Ninety-Six District. Between 1785-1789 eight counties were established within Ninety-Six District: Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenville, Laurens, Newberry, Pendleton, Spartanburg, and Union. Later, labels fluctuated between either Districts or Counties, and additional counties were formed from these. Today, 15 of SC's 46 counties were formed from some part of what was Old Ninety-Six District. The 15 current day counties that were, at least in part, formed from the Old 96 District are: Abbeville, Aiken, Anderson, Cherokee, Edgefield, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, Oconee, Pickens, Union, Saluda, and Spartanburg.
