For a list of the soil survey maps that are available check out this web site. http://soils.usda.gov/soil_survey/pub_sur/sc.htm It looks like most of the ca. 1943 surveys are out of print and no longer available but I have sent the state office a note and requested that if there are still a few stashed away, that they would sent us copies. Seems like someone was searching for a Gregory a couple of weeks or month ago. Found this tonight listed on USGENWEB > SC> Aiken Co> Cemeteries > Warrenville Cem. Couldn't get the cem to come up when I clicked on the link, but in doing a search for surnames I got it. The following is the URL http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sc/aiken/cemeteries/warrenvi.txt Went thru it and saw this: 29. John C. Gregory December 29, 1888 February 13, 1964 At Rest Footstone Double Marker with Lula Elizabeth Gregory 30. Lula Elizabeth Gregory August 18, 1893 May 25, 1966 At Rest Footstone Double Marker with John C. Gregory 31. No Name Unable to read Funeral Marker 32. F. Odell Gregory November 28, 1923 November 4, 1989 Footstone Father Double Marker with Margie E. Gregory Nearer My God To Thee 33. Margie E. Gregory August 17, 1931 April 8, 1996 Footstone Mother Double Marker with F. Odell Gregory I think I saw a couple of other Gregory folks as well. Billie Jones Camden, SC tjones@camden.net
I've got a copy of an old soil survey map ca. 1934/37 that shows the location of each school in Pickens County at that time. Apparently there was a map and booklet produced for each county in the state. You may want to check with your county soil conservation office to see if they still have a copy. I got mine at the Pickens office less than 10 years ago, so there may still be some floating around out there for the other counties. It is very interesting to look at the old maps, especially one as detailed as this, to see how the roads ran, and where the churches and schools were. Each house in the county is represented by a dot, so you can determine how many neighbors your ancesters had and how close. John Cook

Dear Mrs. Childers: You may want to check out my article "South Carolina Reports of Free Schools For Anderson and Pendleton Districts 1825-1836" in The Carolina Herald and Newsletter, Volume XXVII, June 1999, No. 2, pages 51-54. Photocopies of the Free School reports and additional historical information may be available to the public at the Anderson County Museum when it opens in early January 2003. This material has been donated by me to the museum. The limited material includes the South Carolina Acts of Assembly to establish the free schools and names the districts (if memory serves me correctly at this time). I hasten to add .... I am a genealogists who has learned about South Carolina history in a very limited way. My home is in Alabama ! My maternal roots take me back to the Pendleton District ca1790s. However, my Leveretts were outstanding educators of Anderson in the 1830s-50s. Wesley, Stephen and Chesley (my gr gr gr grandfather). Hope this will provide you and your class with a few clues to the early schools in your area. I will be glad to email you a copy if you do not locate the publication. Sincerely, Charlotte Tucker Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Hi Mrs Childers and others I read in the Old 96 District mailing list that you and your class are searching for information on Old Schools in the Old 96 District. While searching the Martin line of W.W.Martin and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Mills Martin,I came accross A Martin School, which I believe to have been on Martin School Rd. in Pickens,SC. W.W.Martin worked in the Clerk Of Court office of J.M.Stewart,about 1870-90s. I am connected to this line thru their daughter,Sarah Elizabeth Susannah (Martin/Holcombe?) Stewart married to my ggrandfather Daniel Carter Stewart b.1842 Pickens co.SC.,son of Robert Stewart and Elizabeth Durham. There is a Martin collection at Clemson Univ.of some 200 letters belonging to this Martin line. I placed a folder of letters and information from the Pickens co.SC. Stewart line connected to this Martin line at the Faith Clayton genealogy room at Southern Wesleyan Univ. in Central,SC. Anne Sheriff is the curator in the genealogy room there. I have a 2nd cousin, who has a large school book on geography, which belonged to Sarah Elizabeth Susannah Martin/Holcombe Stewart.I suspect the book was connected to the school. Also there is a Barbara Martin in the Oconee area, who still has the original Bell to the School and maybe more information that I have on this Martin School. I realize that this School is not in the areas you mentioned, but it was in the area that was once Old 96 District,I hope you will include it. I will put the email address here of three other Martin searchers, who may have additional information on the Martin School. Thank you and much success with your project. Gay Stewart Beam jimfile@aol Barbara Martin DisMartin @aol Dick Martin Mountaineers2@bellsouth.net Sandy I will put a link here for these three back to your Abbeville,Old96 School page. It is that time of the year when in addition to enjoying the holidays with our family and friends we can anticipate meeting lots of genealogists who will be joining our mailing lists. Since many of these folks have been genealogists for some time they will bring lots of info to share. However, some of them will still be learning how to use their new computers that they just got for Christmas and have done little or no genealogy on the internet so we will need to be especially helpful to these new members. I am confident that each of the 479 members of this list will be understanding and go that extra measure to assist our "newbies". May each and everyone of you have your best holiday season ever.
