    3. Does anyone know anything about this Barram BOBO? My WRIGHT family of Spartanburg and Union Counties (pre 1825) used the given name Barram. I couldn't help noticing that! Mickey -----Original Message----- From: Jack Keller [mailto:jek3105@maxinter.net] Sent: Friday, January 10, 2003 9:54 PM To: SC-OLD96-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Old96] Cross Anchor, SC. In a book, "Our Heritage, A Community History of Spartanburg County, S.C.", by Michael Leonard, pages 34-36 are on Cross Anchor (Spartanburg Co.) and Cross Keys (Union Co.). The book is reprints of newspaper articles fron the Spartanburg Herald- Journal, and copyright 1983 and 1986 by same, published by Band and White, Inc. I bought my copy around 1999 in a store in downtown Spartanburg. Price on cover is $22.95. Legend has it that about 1800, the British ship Sally docked at Charleston and the Captain and purser set out to explore the upper sections of South Carolina. They happened upon a crossroads and the captain (unnamed) liked the area and set up camp. The purser traveled about another 5 miles and set up his own camp on a knoll. The captain and purser rejoined each other a few days later and vowed to return and settle at their respective sites. They did return an build homes. The captain names his Cross Anchor. The purser names his Cross Keys. The captain's home burned down in 1932. The purser's home still stands (November 27, 1981 -- date of article). The Cross Keys house is identified as built by Barrum BOBO by the Cherokee District of the Daughters of the Confederacy (plaque placed by them). There is a picture og Cross Keys home, Spartanburg Herald-Journal photo. Caption says there is a stone just below roof peak engraved with crossed keys and the date 1812 beneath it. Some old names identified to Cross Anchor area in article are Hays and Lambright (both before 1800) and Dillard (about 1860). A 1924 Cross Anchor H.S. track team photo identifies Roy Starns, John Welsh, Algie Bobo, Dan Yarborough, Welch Hollis and their coach L. B. Templeton, Jr. Hope this info is helpful. 1. [Old96] Puckett/Scott
    2. M. Young
    3. The surnames I am looking for in OLD96 are: Puckett and Scott. Specifically, I am looking for parents and siblings of Miles C. Puckett b. c. 1813 SC d. after 1903 GA and parents, siblings, and first wife of John Thomas Scott b c. 1787 SC or VA, d. 1844 Union Co., SC. Both families were in Union Co., SC for a time. John Thomas Scott appears to have had a long time residence in Union Co., SC. According to the 1880 listing for one of his sons, he was born in VA. A listing in 1880 for another son said he was born in SC. Miles C. Puckett was a Methodist Minister and, thus, road the circuit. He changed circuits and primary addresses quite a bit. His first circuit, however, included Union Co., SC and he kept returning to that county from time to time. For those reasons, I believe his family may also have been from Union Co., SC. Any information would be appreciated. Melanie

    3. Craig, A very good website for the Wood family who came to Winston and Neshoba Co., MS is: <http://www.ealgood.homestead.com>. This site belongs to James Algood, and he has some very good information as well as pictures. My Wood connection is through Matthew J. Wood. I am not directly related. M. 3. Hi Craig, I, too, have a Wood line in Greenville/Spartanburg SC. I have another, different - I think way back coming out of VA. All I have on my WOODs are as follows. I have a William Wood born unk but who was the father of a John WOOD born abt 1725, he married Maiden SEAY, unk where they were born BUT their daughter, my direct ancestor, was Jane WOOD who was born 10 Feb 1780 in Spartanburg CO SC, she married Stephen Pace, of the very rich and well know PACEs of VA. I have 7 children for them. One of their daughters Maiden Seay Pace b 26 Dec 1802 d 17 Jan 1882 in Greenville Co, was my ggggrandmother. I see my John as sort of paralleling your William, brothers maybe?? I thought I'd send what I have, not much, on the Woods. If you find any thing that connects please keep me in mind. 1. [Old96] Casey's in the Canebrake area Revolutionary War Loyalists YES or NO
    2. Tim Casey
    3. Looking thru some online pages I typed in Casey Revolutionary War. Found a site that had the following from a letter at that time. http://sc_tories.tripod.com/loyalists_captured_in_december_1775.htm Now that Christopher Casey who died in Cole Co MO can not be the same as he was in the Rev War and recieved a pension. Now who were these 4 Casey's I assume descendants of who could be their father was John , Moses, Christopher or Jesse . But if this is correct not all Casey's were Revolutionary Soldiers but some were Loyalists (Tories) It seems in SC at the time of the Revolutionary War it was more of a Civil War father against sons and families. Something to think about. Another point brought up on some of these sites is that those fighting both were actually subjects of the British Crown so if you sided with England you were a Loyalists "Tory" , if you sided with the new colonies actually you were a Rebel and you were guilty of treason to the British Crown. You could have been hung or lands confiscated. I wonder if that happened to these four Casey family members. Or did Gen Levi or Christopher, Randolph , William , Benjamin step in and saved them. What do you think now about this.???? I think I know who these Casey men belong to do you? This is my opinion on the Revolutionary War I may be wrong but if so any explanations would be appreciated. John , Moses, Christopher , Jesse Casey of the Canebrake were arrested as Loyalists!!! Where is the Canebrake area at that time? I found the following explanation: Moses Casey land was between the Enoree River and the Tyger River , the Enoree on the West and the Tyger on the West and the Enoree may connect farther south to the Broad River. Actually downloaded a map from the 1700 periods and trying to document where each Casey family was located. 1776 In the area of Spartanburg, SC, Captain James Ford and his wife were killed by Indians sympathetic with the British. Ford's daughters were taken captive by the Indians in this attack. Ford lived on the Enoree river near a placed called the Canebrake. Settlers sympathetic to the British sat beneath poles bound in white cloth, called "passovers." These were supposed to protect Tories from Indian attack, but Ford and his family were not so protected, even though they had a passover. Later, the daughters of Capt. Ford were freed from their captivity. [Some Heroes of the American Revolution (In the SC Upper Country), Bailey, 1924; reprinted 1976, Southern History Press, Easley, SC, p. 224.] List of 136 Loyalists Captured during the Snow Campaign The following letter and attached list of 136 Loyalists were first published (1855) in a book by R. W. Gibbes, M. D. entitled Documentary History of the American Revolution Consisting of Letters and Papers Relating to the Contest for liberty, Chiefly in South Carolina, from Originals in the Possession of the Editor and Other Sources, at pages 249-253. Biographical sketches of four of the most important of these men are appended to this web site and are accessible from the hyperlinks shown below. Mr. Richardson to the Council of Safety [Original MS.] [To] The Honorable the Council of Safety. CONGAREES, January 2d, 1776. GENTLEMEN: By Col. Thomson of the rangers, you will receive, if nothing happens, the prisoners, we thought proper to detain, which, upon examination, find were the most leading and active, in taking the powder at Ninety-Six, and the late camp. They were long out before taken, and have been some time since in durance, from which circumstances they of course will make but a despicable appearance, adding also, that the spirit of humility and contrition takes place of the opposite character. I shall say but little now, as I wrote so fully yesterday by express. I am at a loss to know how to recommend my brother Colonel, will only say his behavior has been as becomes him, and deserves your notice. My hurry in getting off the people provisions, etc., obliges me to desist, and only add that I am, gentlemen, Your most obedient humble servant, RICH'D RICHARDSON. 1. [Old96] Cross Anchor, SC.
    2. Jack Keller
    3. Jack Keller in Maryland. (Sims and Harris connections in Union and Spartanburg Counties)

    3. Thank you for the outline on the Langford family. Have you gone to the Library of Virginia site and searched the Edwards name? I have found many thing on this wonderful site that I have never come across in books. Regarding Edwards name, I have an intermarriage in Mississippi of another family line with the Edwards family. I haven't done much work on this family since I have been devoting so much of my time to the Langfords. (Too much time I think sometimes!) I am going to retain your message in my inbox and if I should stumble upon anything about Sarah, Samuel and Hannah and Edward Edwards I will be happy to pass it on to you. I am assuming that they were Virginians who migrated through NC to SC. It is so strange that I have seen the Lester name in Georgia but did not know that Amy Langford married a Lester. And Jones Co. GA has just become a point of interest in my Langford research due to a guardianship matter involving my 3greatgrandfather Edmund Langford and the orphan of John Burton whose wife was named Elizabeth. I was looking at my notes and have found that Mary Langford married Daniel Morgan (both of Newberry) and a daughter Sarah Morgan who married Samuel Quintus Price. This family intermarried with the Summers family. In the same town in Georgia was William H. Langford who was crippled as a young man and invented the "Langford Horse Collar" This was in Senoia, Coweta Co. Georgia. Perhaps this William who died young was the brother of Amy and Mary. Isn't it marvelous how a bits and pieces of information can come together and create our families? If you hadn't told me about the Lester family, I would not have placed it on my to-look-for list in Jones Co. Georgia. Thank you very much. 1. [Old96] Early VA/NC Cogburns said to be ancestors of Edgefield's John Cogburn, SR.

    3. The following info. is from the web site http://66.25.20.212 Ray Porter 832.453.6056 rporter6@houston.rr.com He gives the following info. on the father of Edgefield Co, SC's John Cogburn who married Hannah [Harry]. _________________________________________ Michael Cockburn 1720 - 1768 Not much is known about Michael Cockburn, except the few records we have been able to find in North Carolina. However, from records of two of his sons we know the Cockburn family was in Virginia from about 1745 until at least 1750. One son states he was born in the "neighborhood" of George Washington in the year of 1749. Thus between the years of 1750 and 1764 we don't know where the Cockburn's lived. May 15, 1764 Michael Dixon, grantor to Michael Cockburn, grantee, 93 acres no witnesses Orange Co., NC Register of Deeds 1752-1768 Nov 1764 Hugh Barnett, Paul Harrelson, Paul Ham, Burges Harrelson, Garrett Guttery, Edward Chambers, Michael Cockburne & Wm. Chambers, Jr, and that Burges Harrelson be appointed Overseer of the Road leading from Mayo's to Hico ford and that Thomas Douglass be Overseer of that part leading to Granville line. Orange Co., NC Court, p. 248. 1 Apr 1768 Sarah Miles swears before Jho Pryor that the land and plantation where he ( Michael Cockburn) did live, Michael Cockburn lent to his wife for her natural life and then gave it to his son Henry Cockburn and his heirs and that five shillings Va money he gave to John Cockburn. 1 Apr 1768. William Miles Jun. swears before Jho Pryor that Michael Cockburn lent to his wife Mary Cockburn for her life the land then it to go to son Henry and he gave John Cockburn 5 shillings cash. 1 Apr 1768. Proved by oath of Mary Cockburn. Caswell Co., NC Deed Book A This record indicates a couple of things about the Cockburn's. One, Michael had died by 1768, and two, it suggests John was not only the oldest son, but was also the prodigal son. It is known from South Carolina records, John was already established in Edgefield County by 1768. 14 Aug 1775 John Cockburn of Granville Co, now in Ninety Six District of SC to Henry Cockburn of Orange Co., NC, 97 ac on east side of Gents Cr a branch of Hico and part of a larger tract Cockburn purchased of Michael Dickson by deed in Orange Co. of 4 Aug 1764. wit: James Cockburn, Michael Cockburn. 14 Aug 1775 Caswell Co., NC Deed Book A, p.34. John had apparently bought land from Michael Dickson which was unrecorded in Orange County records. What's interesting is the witnesses. This record suggests there may have been another son named Michael. The other possibility is the sale took place before Michael died, he was a witness of the sale, and the sale was recorded later. Known children of Michael and Mary Cockburn: John Cockburn of Edgefield County, South Carolina. Henry Cockburn of Union County, South Carolina. James Cockburn of Greenville County, South Carolina. Amy Langford had 4 siblings: Mary, John, Sarah, and William. I don't have any information concerning them. I am a descendent of the Lester line, John E. Lester was an older brother of my gg grandfather, David W. Lester, Sr., and they were both the children of John Lester and Sarah Edwards. Anyone having information on the ancestry of Sarah Edwards, I would be thankful if you would post it. One researcher shows Samuel Edwards and Hannah as her parents but I have yet been able to verify this information. Another researcher informed me that Edward Edwards, of Virginia, late an immigrant to South Carolina, was her father.

    3. Please forgive the multiple posting of this question. I am trying to locate tax lists for Newberry and Edgefield and Ninety Six Districts prior to and after the Revolutionary War. I have not been able to find any mention of my ancestors in the Abstracts of Deeds books nor the Petition for land grants. They had land on Ninety Six Creek near the Saluda River. They may have obtained it by grant which I have not found yet or purchase from a prior owner. The names of the families I am researching in this area are Jackson and Langford/Lankford. Also my best genie-buddy is researching Wilson family in Newberry beginning about 1771 when they migrated from Ireland. Our library does not have the tax lists nor the SC Gen. Society Journals. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Tree Mother in Texas

    1. [Old96] Re: Caldwell Family
    2. Attention: Joseph E. Browne, On October 25, 2002, you sent a letter to OLD96 Line stating you were researching certain families, one being the Caldwell's. I am also researching the Caldwell's, who came through that area, on down into GA and received land, but eventually ended up in Limestone County, TX in the early 1850s. My line is through Curtis Caldwell, who I believe is related to your Thomas. I have just got started back on this line. I work one line and put it aside and work another. The one thing in you e-mail to this Line was you mentioned a book on the Caldwells by Carroll Wayne Caldwell who lives in Spartanburg. Do you have an address or e-mail for him? I would be very interested in getting in touch with him. I recently purchased several book, one being "The History of Spartanburg" by J.B.O. Landrum, and it has a page or so on the Caldwell family, and it mentions James. Also, in another book entitled "Gone To Georgia" compiled by William C. Stewart for the National Genealogical Society in Washington, DC from records in the National Archives it states the following on the Caldwell families who moved on down into Georgia: It gives names and 1820 census on John and Curtis Caldwell. "Also enumerated in Gwinnett County, GA in 1820 was James Caldwell, Alexander, James and William in Clarke County, Curtis C. Coldwell married in Oglethorphe County May 4, 1826, Sarah McCowan. Most of the Caldwell's came from Pennsylvania to Virginia and moved south and west, first noted in Wilkes County, GA., records being in Alexander from Virginia who took land on Ogeechee, Dec 7, 1773. Some at least of that family in northeast Georgia probably were related to the family of David Caldwell who was in the Pendleton District, SC by 1790." 1820 - Gwinnett Co., GA James Caldwell #210110-21110-0 I hope this will give you some direction where these Caldwell's migrated. Also, a James' name is mentioned twice in the Intestate Records of Georgia as an Administrator of estates that were settled Intestate (without a Will) but without knowing the time frame, I would wait to know if you would want this information. I would very much like to know how to get a copy of the Caldwell book. Betty Rich Paxson
