Good Morning, A.D. Smith and list, William Duncan is one of my brick walls, I hav`nt worked on my Duncan family for a while. This is what I think but can`t prove: William Duncan b 1770 - 1780 NC m Francis (Franky) Benson abt 1800-1805 parents of: 1. Lemuel James Duncan b 1804 SC m Sarah M (Melissa?) Cox b 1814 in NC Sarah`s parents are Martin Cox and Nancy Howerton. They are in the Greenville area in the census 1800 and 1810. After leaving Greenville they are in Warren Co Tn in the 1820`s and in Cannon Co. Tn. in 1830. In 1850 Sarah`s parents are also in Tn. I`m trying to do this from memory so will have to get out my papers. Lemuel and Sarah move to Madison Co Ark in 1860 and settle their for life. I need to enter this data back into my genealogy program. Thanks for the response and I`m going to study the information. Linda
Looking for more defendable information for one of my "needles in the haystack"; need solid info or leads on family composition of one William SMITH of NC>PendletonSC /Franklin Co GA (there were 32 Wm Smith's with War 1812 service records living in GA alone) who is possibly son of John "Little River" Smith (Montgomery Co NC); he is believed to be the one who enlisted for Rev War service in Nov 1780 in 96th/Pendleton Distr; maybe uncle to one William Smith R9701 Served as a captain of a mounted Indian spy company and was at the siege of Augusta and Savannah. In addition, this William SMITH assisted in building several forts in GA and Smith Fort on the Ogeechee. He was also at the siege of Charleston and in numerous skirmishes. Perhaps it is this same William Smith who sold his SC bounty lands to Capt Rang for 20 lbs. (British money still used after the war ?) ; my William SMITH (b abt 1763) & wife Elizabeth, moved to Elbert/Franklin/Habersham Co GA abt 1789; my William may be the one recorded as an Indian "spy", Wilkins Station, Franklin Co GA militia in 1790; beginning abt 1802-1805 took land in Lincoln Co TN and thereafter was involved in selling off his land held in NE GA to various parties, including several WHITEHEAD transactions. One of his daughters, Nancy SMITH (b 1791 NE GA) married Archibald WHITEHEAD abt 1807 in TN or GA (?); and by 1810 were living in Lincoln Co TN. Nancy's father, my William SMITH is next known to be buying land Nov 25, 1824 in Walker (land in now Fayette) Co AL. Said William SMITH's location is then unknown until matters related to settlement of his estate arise related to a "deed of gift" conveying this Walker/Fayette Co AL "land and a slave for the rest of her life", signed in Nov 3, 1838 by said William SMITH to his daughter Nancy Smith Whitehead. She later had to pursue her father's lawyer (BROWN, of Tuscaloosa AL; hired by one of William SMITH's sons), who attempted to keep the land for himself, and thus Nancy won back the land in a proceeding before the Alabama Supreme Court in 1851. Nancy's case was supported by a deposition provided by her brother, Jasper SMITH of Lauderdale Co AL. It is unknown where said William SMITH or his wife Elizabeth died. Other than Jasper SMITH, other sons of William SMITH are not known, but some clues follow. Among the other candidate sons of William SMITH are: Lemuel "Lee" SMITH, b 1798 SC; seen in 1830c of Fayette Co AL; Robert C. SMITH b 1799 SC, seen in 1840c of Lincoln Co TN; Jonathan SMITH b 1804 SC, seen in 1850c of Lincoln Co TN; Daniel Franklin SMITH, b 1806 Greenville SC, took land in 1832 adjacent to Fayette Co AL lands of William SMITH; James Rufus SMITH, b 1811 TN, took Fayette Co AL land in 1850 alongside Nancy Smith WHITEHEAD; Alfred SMITH b 1813 TN, in 1836 took Fayette Co AL land adjacent to William SMITH; Moses Howell SMITH b Feb 15, 1811 SC, living in 1840c in Fayette Co AL community where Wm SMITH's land lay. [some of above may be sons; some may be nephews; some may be unrelated ???] Any SMITH experts out there who can help fully establish subject family ??? Trying to find the origins of the HAZEL family who settled in the Saluda side of Edgefield near Mill Creek, Tarpin Creek and Halfway Swamp Creek. Also settled on the other side of the Saluda in Newberry near Goose Pond Creek. Rumored to have been there as early as 1756. Were definitely there by 1772. Later moved to GA, AL, TX, OK. Early HAZELs intermarried with CULBREATHS. Are these CULBREATHs related to the CULBREATHS/COLBREATHS from Halifax and Mecklenburg Cos, VA? Also sorting out JOHNSONs from the same general area -- near Saluda. David JOHNSON came from Lunenburg Co, VA in the late 1780s. One of his sisters married Drury MALONE who also ended up in Edgefield. His sons, Morris, Joshua and Samuel were all in Edgefield as adults in the early 1800s. David seems connected to the RAMSEYs. No idea how. Any clues gratefully received. Happy to share what I have. Barbara

In regard to Charles Blakely's post about his family leaving for TN & AL about 1810. That is about the same time my family migrated. I have also seen several families that traveled about the same time and area. What was happening to bring about such relocation? Was there land allocated for Rev. war vets, or economic hardships I'm really curious? Any ideas? My quest is for Charles Whitten that ended up in Lauderdale County, AL & Wayne County TN. John L. Whitten

Civil War records state that WILLIAM H. STEPHENSON was born Dec. 2, 1817 in the Anderson District of SC. The Anderson District was not formed until the late 1820s, therefore, he must have been born in the Old 96th District. The death certificate of WILLIAM H. STEPHENSON gives the name of his parents as JAMES S. and MARGARET STEPHENSON. Would appreciate any information on any of the above individuals. Betty, I'm interested in your Blakleys. Especially if they were in Laurens or York Counties, SC in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Mine were there, and left for TN and AL around 1810.
