Hi folks: I am looking for any history on Enoch Carter born 1824 in Abbeville. Married Nancy Mays born 1831 in Abbeville. They had four children: Moved to Georgia and then to Alabana. Savanah born 1856 Mathew Denis born 1859 John K. born 1869 Franklin born 1880 R. L. Carter Beancounter13@juno. com
Frank, I have researched the Hawthorne clan for many years and thought that I knew almost every one of them and particularly the ones in the Old Pendleton District, however, I have nothing on Edward Nichols Hathorn/Hawthorn/Hawthorne. In about 1810 (can not be exact without checking the will) Joseph Johnson Hawthorn inherited a plantation from his mother which was located a area referred to as the Old 96th District and I think that he was the first of the clan to settle there. During this time period there were three (3) known Hawthorne Clans living in the area now know as Abbeville County (part of the 96th District). One clan picked up an moved during a mass Presbyterian migration to Preble County, Ohio, and another headed for Alabama, Louisiana and then Texas. The remaining clan stayed primarily in the same geographical area (Western South Carolina and just over the state line into Georgia-around Athens) until the early part of the 1830's. During this time a few of the Hawthorne women married into families that headed into Northern Mississippi which was being opened to white settlers following the signing of the Dancing Rabbit Treaty in about 1834. In 1850 the entire family of Thomas Hawthorn, which included his married children and their families, migrated to Tippah County, Mississippi. This group contained some 11 families and their children. I would really like to find out who this "Nick" Hawthorne was and which of the clans he was connected to. I checked for Elizabeth "Betsy" Bryant but did not find her either. I do have information on the Duckworth line starting with John (b. c1670 in Lancashire, England - d. c1698 in St. Mary's, Maryland) and following the line into Abbeville County, SC. The only John Owens that I have in my dBase was married to Sarah Caldwell and when I checked them out I found that I do not have a listing of their children. The Caldwells and the Hawthornes were neighbors and there is a good chance that the Owen family also lived in the same area. Perhaps if we work together on this we may be able to piece this whole thing together. I hope so, because there is a very good chance that this "Nick" could have been from my clan and I would like to gather as much on him as I can. By the by, if we can connect him I will load you down with information. Regards, Fred Hawthorne (JFHawthorne@ATTBI.com) "One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been." ----- Original Message ----- From: <Holmesfranka@aol.com> To: <SC-OLD96-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 01, 2003 1:54 PM Subject: [Old96] HATHORN, HAWTHORNE, HATHORNE, BRYANT, DUCKWORTH. > A book on the Duckworth family in Mississippi includes the following: > > "About 1820 there was a large immigration from S. Dear Mary, I have been told that COCHRAN is another spelling for the surname COCKERHAM. Do you know if this is true? If true, do you have any connection to William Winn COCKERHAM? I am descended from William Winn COCKERHAM of NC and SC. The family came down through GA to Pickens Co., AL and was in the Noxubee Co., MS area by about 1830. My 4g-grandmother and William's second wife, Nancy Estes COCKERHAM, d. 14 Mar 1842 and is buried in Choctaw Co., MS. Their daughter, Mary COCKERHAM, was married to the Rev. Silas DOBBS. I am particularly interested in finding PROOF of Lydia Linn's maiden name. The oldest son of James (d.@1824) and Lydia Linn (outlived husband) was Garrison Linn (1805-1845). If naming patterns have anything to do with it, Lydia was a Garrison. I have searched as many Garrison records in the OPD as I can find, but have found no Lydia. Although born in the OPD, Garrison moved with his family & cousins to Cass County, Georgia, shortly before he died. If Lydia Linn was not a Garrison, does anyone have any clue as to her maiden name? I have much information on the Linns, which I am willing to share.
Looking for any information concerning the Gallaugher Surname anywhere. Particularly interested in John Gallaugher of Abbeville Dist. who was married to Sallie Hearst before 1808. Various spellings, including Gallaher and Gallagher. Thanks, Dennis Smith
Does anyone happen to know where Shoal Creek is/was in Old 96? There is/was a Pendleton Isbell's Church there. It is possible Pendleton Isbell was someone from the church. Thank you Tammy Lynn Collard Collards@knology.net
I would like to suggest to those who participate in roll calls to put your surnames in the SUBJECT of your message. Why waste time placing your notice of names you are researching only to have the message deleted before it is even opened because you have not given surnames? Most listers have lots of messages to go through on a daily basis. I am guessing most do the same as I do and just delete the ones which do not show a surname in the subject.
