I believe they connect to some of my lines as the name is used as a middle name in the Rotton/Rauton family from which I descend. The Earliest James Smyly that I have is as follows: [Not well researched or documented by me; generation 3 from census records] Descendants of James Smyly 1 James SMYLY b: September 07, 1789 in SC d: December 26, 1838 Burial: Lt Stevens Creek Bapt.,Kirksey, Edgefield Co., SC . +Grace Joanna COATES b: August 20, 1794 in SC d: August 31, 1835 Burial: Lt Stevens Creek Bapt, Kirksey, Edgefield Co., SC ..... 2 William Scott SMYLY b: January 04, 1822 d: January 30, 1856 ......... +Zelime Grace ALLEN b: February 14, 1827 m: November 07, 1844 d: May 01, 1906 Father: John C. Good luck. I have been curious about this family for a while too, but have not gotten to deed in the research. Billie Jones Camden, SC tjones@camden.net

    3. The following shows up in all the Old 96th Dist Posts. ==== SC-OLD96 Mailing List ==== This list serves the area that encompasses present day Spartanburg, Union, Laurens, Abbeville, Newberry, Edgefield and parts of Anderson and Cherokee and adjoining Counties along the NC line. It needs to also include: Saluda (1895) , Greenwood (1897), McCormick (1915) and the northern part of Aiken Co, SC (1971) as these counties were formed from the original Old Edgefield Dist, a part of the old 96th Dist. Most folks seem to be focusing on the more northern counties, but these also were a part of the Original Old-96th Dist, and is the area of my research, altho some of my husband's lines seem to have come to GA. from the upper part of the state. Sorry I did not give a better definition of the book. Benjamin Duckworth, His Descendants and Related Families by Sandra E. Boyd and Lucile Rogers Skehen published in 1989. I believe I saw a copy in the library at Collins, MS. It details the Duckworth family in south Mississippi. Frank A. Holmes Fort Valley, GA.

    1. [Old96] To Joyce-Re:Chappell
    2. Hi Joyce! I, too, am researching the Chappell's in the Old 96 District. I am stuck on James/John Chappell born about 1801 in SC. I have no parents for him, etc. I believe they may have come to the upstate from Newberry. I have much info on his descendants as well as pics, death certs, etc. Another researcher and I are desperately trying to find parents and siblings. He married an Abigail Boren/Bowen abt. 1833 and they were living in Pickens Co. Another Chappell, Delilah, married a James Boren. These families seem to be intertwined, so I am thinking that siblings married siblings, as was the case alot of the times back then. Which Chappell line are you researching? Patricia A.
