    1. [Old96] Re: Thomas families of SC and AL
    2. THOMAS - Looking for early residents of Greene County and Edgefield Distr., SC. There follows information for Jeremiah Thomas from Edgefield, SC. I visited Greene County at the county seat in Eutaw across from Scooba while at a family reunion several years ago. These Thomas' are on the census and I've traced them to Scooba. I'm trying verify the name of William A. Thomas wife. It's shown on his sons death certificate as Polly Roaden. Most of my Thomas bunch were from around Edgefield and I think over into Savannah, GA. Seeking information on Jeremiah Thomas, place of Birth and parents. Through a lease Jeremiah Thomas of the state of GA, planter, was present in Edgefield County, 96 Dist, SC in Oct 1795. Sold land granted to him in Oct 1794 on Little Steven's Creek and waters of the Savannah River. His name appears on the SC 1800 census. Jeremiah Thomas served in the Revolution during 1778 under a Capt. Anderson Thomas and 1782 under Capt. Robert Frost in SC. Note in the Audited Accounts 7725. I believe he had at least two sons, Joshua, b 1799 and Jeremiah 1800 something. Joshua was my GGGrandfather he is shown in Greene County, in Jones and Gandrud Records on pages 82 & 83, Vol. 94 or 108. My GGrandfather was William A. Thomas born in Green Cty, AL in 1829 and Grandfather was Charles William Thomas b Scooba, Kemper Cty, MS, in 3-10-1863 where he married Sallie Frances Blair in 1890 and moved to Houston, TX where he worked for the Southern Pacific RR. Joshua and Jeremiah were present in Scooba, Kemper Cty, MS, in the mid/late 1800s. Joshua at age 71 married to a Narcissa with a son David on the 1870 census. I have these Thomas's in Texas to date. There was a Josiah (John) Thomas at the Red Bank Baptist church on the little Saluda River in Edgefield Dist before 1792. He was on the 1790 census for Edgefield Dist, SC. Thought these names might be of the same family somehow. There was a Reverend John Thomas in that area of SC that is credited with some 12 children that lived to become adults. During the course of year, he had at least two wives and lived to a very old age. This dates back to prior to the Revolutionary War. This Reverend Thomas is most aptly the father or grandfather to the Thomas families in that area of SC. And, check your history references. Prior to the War of 1812, very few settlers were stupid enough to cross the Ocmulgee River at Dames Ferry in Jones Co...... The settlers, that did, met with dire consequences; if the Creek didn't slaughter them between the Ocmulgee and the Chattahoochee, the Choctaw did over in what is now Alabama. BEFORE Alabama WAS Alabama, it was just a part of Georgia. Check the date of division for a clear date of Alabama coming into existence. 2. I am searching for the parents of Robert Thompson. His wife is Rhoda Ann Grubbs both from SC. I have reason to believe Roberts father is Herod Thompson, wife Sary (possibly a nickname). I can place Herod in Edgefield in 1790, 1800 and 1810 via census. Rhoda's father is William Grubbs. Robert and Rhoda eventually moved to Alabama along with William Grubbs. I have not been able to place Herod in Alabama.

    3. For years I have looked for the final resting place of my grandfather Lee WADE. My grandfather died in Jefferson Co AL and I live in FL so my physical visits to the various cemeteries has been limited to my trips to AL. BUT, the other day, another genealogist who lives in Jefferson Co who has been helping me look for my grandfather found his grave. In addition to that I discovered another child my grandparents had that I did not know about. I am one very happy grandson. Don't ever give up on your quest to find those ancestors. They are out there waiting to be found by you. Happy, happy, happy. Eldon mailto:ewade@cfl.rr.com List admin for SC-Old96 Researching: WADE, HAMES

    3. Congrats Eldon!! I know how happy you must be. Although cemetery survey books are good starting points, I would like to warn all not to depend on them 100% especially if you know your ancestors MUST be buried in the area. My ggg grandparents were not listed in a cemetery survey. Quite by accident I found them when I went to visit my ggggg grandfather's grave. He had a granite Rev War marker which was easy to read and survey. On the other hand, my ggg grandparents tomb rock was hand made and could only be read if the sun shined at a particular angle. I was VERY happy to find them. Melissa --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - File online, calculators, forms, and more

    3. Lowell, While at the library today, I was looking through Vol I & II of 'A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogy and Family Records' by James E. Wooley. There was a short paragraph on Richard Cannon of Pendleton District. I believe it was in Abbeville, SC. Also, there were some short notes on some Harris families. I won't be back there for a couple weeks, but will take another look and let you know what I find. Please ask me about this in a couple weeks, so I will be reminded. Thanks. 1. [Old96] The "96" in Old 96 District.
    2. Eldon Wade
    3. Someone on the OPD list asked the question as to how the Old 96 District became so named and I thought some of you may be interesting in this: According to legends this is how the 96 District was so named. At the hub of the district was the South Carolina outpost of Ninety-Six. How Ninety-Six got its name is the stuff of fantasy and legend. Ninety-Six claim two legends. An Indian maiden and a Surveyor General are the major participants in these legends. One story is certainly more romantic than the other one! The naming of Ninety Six is credited in one legend to the Cherokee Indian maiden, Cateechee, in a story and to a Choctaw maiden named Isaqueena in a poem. Her name was supposed to mean "Deer's Head". Cateechee (the preferred name) fell in love with a young man named Allen Francis. He visited her village of Keowee in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to exchange guns and calico cloth for deerskins. Francis lived in a small trading post on the Cherokee Path. One night in 1760, Cateechee overheard the Cherokee warriors plotting to wipe out that trading post. Swiftly, she mounted her pony and galloped away through the forests. She arrived at the post with its log stockade in time for the settlers to be prepared and repel the Indian attack. She traveled ninety six miles and because she saved the settlement, her mileage was made its name. Thirty years earlier, in 1730, Surveyor General of the Province George Hunter plotted the Cherokee Path which connected Echota (an Overhill Town in the Cherokee Nation) to Charles Town. He scrawled "96" on his map at the point where a fork in the path led southward to Savannah. By counting the paces of his jogging horse, he estimated the point to be 96 miles from the Lower Town of Keowee. The site - high, level and dry - was popular as a campground and soon became known as Ninety Six. The Cherokee Path began as a trail for Indian warriors and hunters and turned into a route for traders and later, settlers. 3. Mary, Yes, that is my 4th gr-gf. I don't know how he is related to the Hodges either. I thank you for the offer regarding the wills, but I already have his estate papers. He died intestate, so there was an estate sale which lists many Hodges names. I thought for a while that his wife may have been a Hodges, but recently found information that she may have been Gilley Anderson. Gilley Watson is listed on an inventory sheet as having purchased items from the estate sale. I always thought the Gillie Watson listed was his wife as my gr-gm was named Gillie. Possibly one of their daughters married a Hodges or either Hezekiah or Gillie's families were Hodges. I thought it odd that he was buried in a family cemetery and like you just assumed he was related to the Hodges in some way. If so would sure like to know how. Thank you for your reply and sending the link to the cemetery site. I got his birth and death information with your help. Much appreciated!
