See http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ It is intended that this site be able to answer about any question you'd have about the cd. > I should also ask you whether my Family Tree >Maker version 7.5 will work with this new CD? Will I be able to download the >database from the CD into my FTM? Regrettably, if you use FTM (any version), the cd is the ONLY way you can access current versions of the database (since October 1999) unless you are using Win2000 or WinNT. FTM (Win95/98) cannot import a gedcom of this size, but CAN access a database prepared in Win2000. Prepared databases are included on the cd for FTM 5, 6 and 7 (includes 7.5) and for several other programs. Broderbund is well aware of their problem, but has not resolved it. Programs other than FTM can import the gedcom downloaded from http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Delta/8155/site1.html but the cd is provided for the convenience of those who'd prefer an inexpensive cd to undertaking a computer task of this proportion. The cd had its birth on this mailing list. It became apparent if Herman Geschwind's database were to continue to grow, a means had to be provided that it could be readily accessed. If you are using about any genealogy program other than FTM, and have good computer skills and a relatively modern computer, it is still quite workable to download the gedcom, reassemble it, then import it into your genealogy program. Many who are capable of doing so have elected to obtain the inexpensive cd and let us do the rather time-consuming chore for them.
