Hi - this is a long shot. SC and NC and VA were originally almost one area. Then SC and NC had ties - have you looked in these other states? I have about the same problem with William Gambrel, b ca 1770. He has lots of land dealings in NC. I don't know if this William in NC was perhaps the father of the William born c1770. William 1770 was in the SC Pendleton census for 1800. He had married Winnifred Elkins of NC, and they and their children moved to Kentucky c 1802.
