Osiyo 96th/Pendleton District Researchers, We just returned from an Aiken wedding of our cousin's daughter. The wedding was held in a garden park among ponds and old stately trees and heat/hunidity of 110 degrees F. It was beautiful, and the ladies were issued fans in the bride's colors. After rejoicing with the family the day after, we headed up to Anderson to see what was available for my research. The courthouse clerks and officials were just wonderful in helping me with what records were available on site. The records were primarily indices, particularly land recordings back into the 1700s. This was what I particularly needed. I next went to the local library [brand new building] and again found the staff to be tops in cooperation. From here we went to Pickens where, again, the library staff was extremely helpful. We tried to find a McMahan Cemetery and failed because we could find no one who actually knew where it was located. A DAR description did not help due to road name changes. We tried several different routes which did not produce results. The Church was Presbyterian which supported the Scot heritage; still no one could point to a church, present or past, of that denomination. <sigh> From there we traveled to Cowpens and King's Mountain to get a feel for what my ancestors might have experienced there. I was able to establish that my McMAHAN and OLIVER ancestors were in the Old Pendleton District, for sure, and that according to RW records and local history my, John Samuel McMAHAN was from Pennsylvania, though he may have stopped in both Virginia and North Carolina. And, other members of his company and regiment were also from Pennsylvania, particularly the Lancaster region. Is there anyone else on this list researching McMAHAN and/or OLIVER families? Also, I have cousins tied to the FOREMAN and BAILEY families; any one researching these families? Wado, Bill Oliver -=-
