    3. I am of the opinion that a copy of Mills' Atlas of the State of South Carolina should be a required book for genealogists who are interested in finding their old dead kinfolks in that state because it lists all the creeks & rivers at the front of the book and says where to find them. Most libraries have copies. 23 Mile Creek is just south of the town of Pendleton and runs south into the Senaca River which runs into the Savannah -- or, since you really can't tell by looking on a map, in Mills' Atlas, it looks like a branch of the Senaca River. Some years ago, my husband & I were driving south from the town of Pendleton toward US Interstate 85 and suddenly we crossed 23 Mile Creek. It was well marked. Have you checked a AAA map of South Carolina? Another thought -- even though your specific old dead kinfolks are not listed in Frederick von Clayton's book, this does not mean that they were not in the area he researched and wrote about. You HAVE to check all the courthouses as well as the South Carolina archives in Columbus for deeds and land grants. My Linns were not in Clayton's book, but I found them there on 23 Mile Creek anyway. ³James Linn Senr a citizen 246 Acres of Land situate above the line on Twenty Three Mile Creek waters of Savannah River bounding SE on land laid out the other sides on vacant land when surveyed by William Lesley DS on the 5th of August inst. . . . . plat thereof recorded this 31 day of August 1785 A.Anderson C.S² Probate Office, Abbeville County, South Carolina: Old Records - B, p. 63. Land Plat: Also see South Carolina State Plats, Vol 19, p. 311. A short cut is using Betty Willie's "Pendleton District, SouthCarolina Deeds" published by the Southern Historical Press where I found the following, which helped me immensely: 12 June 1790 PENDLETON CO, S.C. CONVEYANCE BOOK A, 1790-92. "Pages 163-165. 12 June 1790. 3. I have seen your James Linn on the South Carolina Census. A James Linn of North Carolina (Craven/Johnston/Wake) was the father of Sarah Linn who married Archibald McElroy/other spellings. He died and she married Jacob Hartsfield. Does your Linn family connect with that one do you think? ----- James did not mention in his will a wife, but a housekeeper, Priscilla Letmand. Children: John and James, Jr.; Daughters, Hanna Marshall, Lucy Hartsfield, Eliz. Clemmonts, Rachel Wilder, Martha Freeman and grandson, Barney Linn (son of Dan, deceased). Executor: Son John and friend, Andrew Peddy (Petty?). Will recorded 6 Mar 1789 in Wake Co. It also carries date of 18 Jul 1797 Wit: Daniel OAKES, Thomas Kee, A.
