    1. Re: [SC-OPD] lookup for John CANNON
    2. The book I referred to is "Our Heritage" by Arlene Rickenbaugh 1929. She provided lots of valuable info, but some of it was wrong. I have been told that some of the work of current researchers is to go thru earlier work and fix up wrong data. Just imagine trying to do this without the use of a computer, and probably long distance phone calls were few and far between!! She said my John was in OPD, and that his children were all born there. One thing that was definitely "fixed" was our understanding of one of the marriage records in Caldwell Co., KY in 1819, where they had removed to. There is a John marrying a Rachel WOOTEN....Arlene naturally assumed that this was a son, John. But a professional did some work for a "cousin" and proved that the handwriting matched that of the father, John. It's really incredible to have photocopies of your 4xgrandfather's handwriting. He didn't seem to have a good command of the pen but had a distinct way of doing capital letters. At least we know he was not illiterate, at that time anyway. As to the John in Newberry....he died in SC in 1828, son of Samuel on Cannon's Creek. I have put together a time-line using an index of the Royal Land Grants prior to 1776, wherein I am able to follow the posession of some of the land to the next generations. I also believe very strongly that there were two separate Samuel CANNONs marrying a wife named Lydia...which has caused a lot of misapplication of info in that northern SC area circa 1750+. There are two James CANNON RW vets and researchers on ea of these lines have claimed the same Newberry, Cannon's Creek Samuel, as their line. But there is another Samuel on Tygar Creek just to the north a bit.....well, you can see it's difficult to do research in the 18th century fog!! Janice
