If any of these SMITHs have a mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother who was born in South Carolina as a WHITAKER in the 1890s, please pass them my name and e-mail address. I am trying to contact the descendants of my great-aunt, Travis, to exchange information and to ask about getting copies of some family photos. I am a granddaughter of Lorenzo Robert WHITAKER (1899-1961) = Virginia SNYDER (1908-1958). LRW was a son of the Rev. George Robert WHITAKER (1855/6-1935) = Julia Imogene HAL(L)FORD (1867-1909). George was the youngest son of David Lorenzo WHITAKER (1823-1906)=(1) Clarissa Pruitt/Pruet/Prevatte (1817-1893?). David was the youngest son of Hugh Hardy WHITAKER (ca. 1765-1849)=Polly Perry (dates unknown). Hugh and Polly came to the Upstate with her family in time for the 1800 census, and were early settlers of the Pendleton District. Clarissa is a big mystery: I've been looking for information on her since October 1984 and have only been able to conclude that she was born in Georgia, possibly in what is now Franklin county. See http://people.clemson.edu/~whitake for a look at some of the information I have on David, Clarissa, and their deceased descendents.
