Beverly, Thanks for asking this question. I had said I did not have the time right now to get in on the Copelands due to family matters, but perhaps I can explain this, since it is my DAR papers from the 1950s that has everyone so confused and I feel guilty. Capt. William Copeland DID NOT have wife Sarah Harper. She was the first wife of William, Jr. When she died, Jr. m2 Mary Nichols, my ancestor. These two marriages were in the time frame of both Williams and my mother, who did the work, had a question mark after Sarah Harper marrying the Capt. My grandfather had said the Copelands called the Harpers "cousin", but he did not know how they fit in. We did have two deeds a few years apart, one with wife Sarah and one with wife Mary. The registrar of the DAR filled out the papers and left this question mark off. All I did was sign the papers, as I had nothing to do with the work. My chart has the question mark. I kept wondering where everyone was finding the proof, so when you see this printed in many places, just disregard. I actually saw my papers about 3 years ago and was astounded to see that Sarah Harper was down absolute as the Capt.'s wife. So much more information has now been printed and become available and it is proven that Sarah Harper was indeed the first wife of Wm., Jr. who was born 1791 in OPD, not Chester Co. The William in Chester Co. was an uncle to the Capt. and he had a son Wm., also. These Copelands all landed at the same time and the Capt. is listed as the William, Jr., while the Wm. of Chester is just William. The name was spelled Coapling. Thank goodness the DAR in now much stricter on documented proof. So, to answer your question, no one that I have ever heard of has found the true name of the wife of William, Sr., the Capt.,(who was called Wm., Jr. when landing from Ireland), not even her first name. Perhaps some day it will be found in a record.
