Sally, The "removed" term indicates the generational difference between two individuals who share a common ancestor. For example, my mother's first cousin is my first cousin once removed and my son's first cousin twice removed. My mother's first cousin's son is my second cousin as we are of the same generation. He is, however, my son's second cousin once removed. My second cousin's son and my son are third cousins as they are of the same generation. And so on. . . What does someone mean when they say they have a cousin once removed, or twice removed?
