    3. Hello Kim, My g.g.grandfather John HERRING and his first wife Catherine ______ were living in the Big Creek district between 1855 and 1865. They are shown in the 1860 census with son L.W. I've never been able to identify his wife's maiden name nor what happened to their son L. W. which I'm fairly certain stood for Lewis Williams. John's father was Isaac HERRING who lived a few miles north of Saluda. Isaac, born in 1789 in N.C. was a schoolteacher in the Saluda area between 1815-1870 and worked in a local saddle shop when school was closed so the children could work the farms. Isaac also had a son Jonithan, b. 1828 who married Amanda Evans. Jonithan and Amanda lived and raised their family in the area all their lives while John and 2nd wife Lucinda REAMES Herring migrated with all of their family except son Jefferson Davis to the Hokes Bluff area of Alabama ca 1882. I would be interested in anything that you run across regarding the HERRINGS or the CHAMBLEE families in this area. My CHAMBLEE family also lived in the Anderson, S.C. area.
