Rex- thanks so much for your reply to my question about the Kerby/Kirby's. It seems we are not from the same Kirby's, though. Morgan Kerby (my ggggrandfather), was b. 1810 in NC, and moved to GA around 1830. He married Hannah Shaw in 1838 in Rabun Co. GA. He is my brick wall. I wish I knew of your Jacob Kirby, but that name is not in my line so far. If I run across it, I will let you know, and I have saved your e-mail in my ancestry file. Thanks again, and good luck to both of us in our searches!! Connie, larw4@aol.com.
Hi, Would you please look for Duty's in your book"Gone to Georgia" ? Thank you. Diana
Rex, do you think you have family buried in Troup Co GA? I am planning a trip there soon. Mary
Connie, My gggggrfa Jacob Kirby was born 27 Feb 1803, Spartanburg and died 14 May 1880 in Spartanburg. He is buried in the old Porter Cemetery out Hwy 150 near Thicketty Creek toward Gaffney. I was there in 1978 and took a few pictures. I assumed - erroneously so - that the cemetery would be listed among those of Spartanburg Co with a list of individuals buried there. It may be now but as of a few years ago it was not listed and any number of individuals have asked me for directions, etc.. Jacob married Patsy Lipscomb about 1828. She died 18 Jun 1854 but I don't know if she is buried in the old Porter Cemetery. Jacob and Patsy had 13 children - I think...one of which was Ransom L. Kirby, br Jan 1835 in Spartanburg. He married Margaret "Peggy" Garner about 1857. They had four children, Richard Monroe, br 25 Jan 1858, Alice br 1859, John Calvin br 1862 and Laura, br 1864. I found them on the 1870 census in Union Co at Jonesville. Richard was 14 and John was 8. Richard and John but not the rest of the family next appear on the 1880 census, Smith Co, Texas with Richard's age being shown as 22 and John shown as 17. It is believed that Richard and John came to Texas with the Garner and other families about 1877 or so. I have never found what happened to Ransom L. Kirby and his wife Peggy Garner or daughters Alice or Laura. There is a Ransom L. Kirby in Troupe Co, GA but I don't seem to find the date he first appeared there. However, based on age and the names of other family members it appears that Ransom in GA was an uncle of Ransom in SC so I think my Ransom was still in Spartanburg in about 1877 when the two boys left home for Texas. Where my Ransom got off to, when he died and where he is buried has puzzled me for many years. So I have left open the possibility that maybe Margaret died, he may have remarried and took off to GA or maybe he and the rest of the family tried to follow Richard and John to Texas but decided to stay in Georgia. I apologize for the lengthy answer to your question but I am hoping you or someone on the list might shed some light on what happened to Ransom L. Kirby, his wife and daughters. And yes in 1978 I walked through many cemeteries in that area of SC and wrote down every Kirby name I could find but Ransom was not one of them nor have I found a Morgan Kirby/Kerby in any of my computer files. But I will keep that name on my list. Maybe there is a connection between Jacob br 1803 and Morgan br 1810. Thanks for any assistance you can give me.
