    3. Is your Elizabeth WILLIAMS a descendant of Hezekiah or Charles WILLIAMS. The parents, Hezekiah and Sarah ABBOTT WILLIAMS, of these brothers were from NJ and some of the descendants migrated to SC GA and TN. On Nov 7, 2005, at 5:32 AM, Debbie Spencer wrote: > . 3. Hi Ellen - I have some ancestors that are from that area, and I'm full of things that I get in the mail, but I always find the small local types like yourself the absolute most valuable in research aids. I have ancestors that I'll probably never find that are from that area, such as the following surnames: GASSAWAY WILLIAMS WATKINS GODFREY I'm not sure of a solid starting point for finding additional information outside of combing ancestry.com, usgenweb's county site (sadly enough I haven't had any luck on that site), etc. NC Archives has a book on the Gassaway family from your area that you cover, but the book is full of incorrect information. My Isaac 'Ira' Gassaway married Elizabeth Williams, both of that area and settled in Grassy Creek, Polk Co TN (in the Copper Basin, cousin to Fannin Co GA.) I suppose the copper mines drew them up there. I'm interested in being a member if it's something that will produce results. As you might imagine, I could spend thousands a year in subscriptions for my clients and myself! I belong to over 15 currently, and find them all wonderful, but that's because I chose to limit myself to that number. What do you suggest? 3. Beverly, Thanks for asking this question. I had said I did not have the time right now to get in on the Copelands due to family matters, but perhaps I can explain this, since it is my DAR papers from the 1950s that has everyone so confused and I feel guilty. Capt. William Copeland DID NOT have wife Sarah Harper. She was the first wife of William, Jr. When she died, Jr. m2 Mary Nichols, my ancestor. These two marriages were in the time frame of both Williams and my mother, who did the work, had a question mark after Sarah Harper marrying the Capt. My grandfather had said the Copelands called the Harpers "cousin", but he did not know how they fit in. We did have two deeds a few years apart, one with wife Sarah and one with wife Mary. The registrar of the DAR filled out the papers and left this question mark off. All I did was sign the papers, as I had nothing to do with the work. My chart has the question mark. I kept wondering where everyone was finding the proof, so when you see this printed in many places, just disregard. I actually saw my papers about 3 years ago and was astounded to see that Sarah Harper was down absolute as the Capt.'s wife. So much more information has now been printed and become available and it is proven that Sarah Harper was indeed the first wife of Wm., Jr. who was born 1791 in OPD, not Chester Co. The William in Chester Co. was an uncle to the Capt. and he had a son Wm., also. These Copelands all landed at the same time and the Capt. is listed as the William, Jr., while the Wm. of Chester is just William. The name was spelled Coapling. Thank goodness the DAR in now much stricter on documented proof. So, to answer your question, no one that I have ever heard of has found the true name of the wife of William, Sr., the Capt.,(who was called Wm., Jr. when landing from Ireland), not even her first name. Perhaps some day it will be found in a record. 3. Guy - thanks and I do have Larry's files - he has done, and continues to do a terrific service to all the Hembree researchers - and I have 3 lines - albeit pre - Civil War - but still 3 lines counts for something! ----- Original Message ----- From: Guy Merritt To: SC-OLD-PENDLETON-DIST-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, November 03, 2005 8:50 AM Subject: Re: [SC-OPD] B. Nelson and Hembree Elizabeth Sanders Emory was one of the widows that traveled, with her children, via The Widows Wagon Train to Sevier County, Tennessee. She was the widow of Edward Emory Jr. If you are descended from Emory/Emery/Hembree, Larry Petrisky has produced some wonderful research on the surname. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmcmin2/Hembrees.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diane S" <dsanfilippo303@adelphia.net> To: <SC-OLD-PENDLETON-DIST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 03, 2005 7:08 AM Subject: Re: [SC-OPD] B. 3. Guy - saw you mentioned Hembree - which family was this? Diane -----Sent: Wednesday, November 02, 2005 3:28 PM Subject: [SC-OPD] B. Nelson Several widows, with their children, traveled after the war via wagon train, from Old Pickens District, SC, to Sevier County, TN. Some of the surnames were; Sanders, Lumpkin, Emory/Hembree/Emery, etc. You mentioned Gossett as one of you lines. I have a letter written in the 1880s from H.J. Gossett, a preacher, to Elisabeth Smith Sanders. The letter was mailed and received in East Tennessee. ----- Original Message ----- From: "B Nelson" <distler5@charter.net> To: <SC-OLD-PENDLETON-DIST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 02, 2005 2:14 PM Subject: Re: [SC-OPD] William Copeland, Sr. & Jr. > Please tell me where I may see or purchase this publication.
