Beverley, Oh, my eyes aren't that good, either. Even with my reading glasses, I borrowed hubby's very nice magnifying glass. Beverley, Hi. Another cool way to find locations of creeks, cemeteries, and the like is the US Geological Survey web site for the Geographic Names Information System. I went to their web site at http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=116:1:16061382506666035784 and typed in the word "creek" in the feature name field, asked for feature type of "stream" from the pulldown menu, and asked for those in Pickens County South Carolina. The result was a list of creeks in Pickens county, from which I selected Doddie's creek and got: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=116:3:16061382506666035784::NO::P3_FID:1247533 From this page, I clicked on "Tiger Map server" to pull up a map of the area with the feature pinpointed with a red dot. Scroll down on the map's window to see a more detailed picture of where the feature is and to be able to zoom in and out. Now I feel educated on where your creek of interest is. :-) Judy
Beverley, Hi. I hope someone else has already written you with the answer or you've found it for yourself on the web site referenced in another note. I've just now had time to look for you in my copy of the book "Mills Atlas - Atlas of the State of South Carolina 1826" which I got for Christmas. (Happy dance!) Anyway, Doddey's Cr. is shown on the map. It is north of Pickensville but south of Pumpkin Town, and from the map, it looks to be close to half-way between those two towns, though of course, it was east of both. There appears to be a mountain or a hill labelled "Hickory" which appears to be on about the same latitude as Doddey's Creek (or just slightly north). I hope that helps you find it on whatever map you have access to where you are. I'm geographically ignorant of the area but hoping to use my new toy to learn. Thanks for giving me an excuse to look and learn. :-) Best of luck in your research, Judy Campbell At 05:23 PM 2/17/2006, you wrote: > Can someone help me pinpoint the location of Dowdy's, Doddy's (sp) Creek of >the Saluda River? > >Thanks for any assistance. > >Beverley
Judy, Judy, Judy, Thanks. My eyes are not so good. I bought the Mill's Atlas for ME for Christmas and was searching the dickens out of Pickens! I do not know the area either. I know TX , but that is about it and sometimes that is challenging. Muchas Gracias. I don't have any information on this particular Thomas family, but I have been looking into the family of Jesse and Martha Baldwin Chappell since they were in the OPD area. I have a James/John Chappell born about 1801 in SC and died before 1860 in Pickens Co, SC from stepping on a snake bone. He is supposedly buried in the old Nimmons-Bowie-Ellenburg cemetery in Pickens Co, SC. He is shown as John in 1850 Pickens Census and as James in other documents. He married Abigail Boren (born about 1812 in SC and died after 1900 in Pickens Co, SC, bur. possibly in the Powell-Alexander-Dodson Cemetery in Rocky Bottom, Pickens Co, SC.). There is also a possible sister of James, Delilah Chappell (born abt 1815, SC and died bef 1880 in probably Transylvania Co, NC. She married James Boren (abt 1810, SC-bef 1870, Civil War?) a possible brother to Abigail Boren Chappell. Since there were no other Chappell families living in the OPD area, we suspect James and Delilah Chappell may be descended from Jesse Chappell. He had a son named John and there was a John Chappell living in Pickens District in 1830 with a son old enough to be James. Delilah is already married by 1830 to James Boren. There is also an interview with George Bowie when he was about in his 90's in the 1980's where he said that Jimmy Chappell came from Newberry County, but he also said that no one knew where he had came from. Do you have any information on other children of Jesse Chappell? I found the following on the internet: Jesse Chappell. Wife: Martha Chappell. Sons, John Chappell, Robert Chappell, Thomas Chappell, Humphreis Chappell, Caleb Chappell. Daughters: Sarah Thomas, Ann Morris, Morgan Chappell. Exors: Wife, Martha Chappell, John Chappell, Charles Webb. Wit: F. Stribling, Charles Webb, Thomas Chappell. Date: 6 April 1810. Probate: 18 April 1810. Bk. A p. 116, Roll 131. Anderson Co, SC. --Anderson Co, SC genweb, Will abstracts As you can see, there is a son named John. Robert Chappell had 4 sons under the age of 10 in 1820 Pendleton District. Two of his sons migrated to Illinois. I just wonder if the John Chappell mentioned in Jesse's will could be the father of my James and his alledged sister, Delilah. James had a son named John, but none of the other names like in Jesse's will. Delilah had a son named Thomas, but no other names as in Jesse's will. Perplexing, to say the least. Any information you could provide on Jesse's children might be of help to us in our Chappell research. Thanks so much! Some really good ideas! and I do love the search. I will first take a look at the land lottery. I do have some other ancestors that drew land in this. Thanks again, Mary
Here is how I would look for them. People typically went to Georgia from SC or NC. I haven't seen many who went to NC, then to SC then to GA. So, I would bet they got married in Georgia and that is where I would start looking. Which then makes me think about the lottery lists. In the information about Gordon County, I found this quote, "An act of Dec. 3, 1832 divided the Cherokee lands into ten new counties -- Cass (later renamed Bartow), Cherokee, Cobb, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Murray, Paulding, and Union. " It says Gordon County was formed in 1850. So, it would make sense they show up in the census of 1850 in Gordon County. I know that some of my ancestors who were granted land in the Cherokee drawing ended up on that land by 1838. So, it would make sense that they were there sometime in the late 1830s, before their first child was born in about 1841. That would make Lewis in his 30s and Huldah just about marriage age when they went to Georgia. The questi! on is initially whether Lewis was a lottery winner himself or whether he was the child of one. I'm betting one or the other is true. There are lists and maps online for the Cherokee land lottery. Here is the order in which I would go find this: 1. I would find out which counties Gordon was formed from. 2. I would find the list for the 1832 Cherokee land lottery in Georgia and see if Lewis Walker is listed for whatever county Gordon (my husband's ancestor, by the way) was formed from. If Lewis is not listed, I would start researching the other Walkers (of which there are something over 50). 3. I would find out how early records are available for Gordon County or the county from which it was formed and join the lists for those counties so I could find out more about how things happened there. Happy hunting. -----Original Message----- From: Polo6565@aol.com To: SC-OLD-PENDLETON-DIST-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, 4 Feb 2006 13:11:23 EST Subject: Re: [SC-OPD] Walker help needed Thank you for this information. Hi Gay! Hello! I know this list is for Old Pendleton Dist. but I also know from reading all the posts there are some amazing researchers on here too!! So I have to ask a question and hope someone can help. Madison Waits was born 1832 GA father was Absolum Waits born around 1800 SC. I cannot find any sort of listing on anything for a mother for Madison Waits. Everything I find just lists unknown! Can anyone or does anyone have access to anything that just "may" have a listing for Madison's mother? The Waits actually came from Newberry and other counties around there. Madison Waits married Sarah Adeline Walker Sept, 9, 1852 DeKalb Co GA book 2 page 216. Any suggestions or help so greatly appreciated. Thank you!! Mary

Linda, I have that Abraham Keasler and his parent and siblings on my website [at bottom of this mail] but don't have his descendants there. AD Smith I see has that line. He probably has more than I do on this Abraham but I have lots on his siblings. That Cemetery is about 10 miles north of Anderson, SC on hwy 178. in Lebanan community. Just where is this house and I would love a copy ot the picture? I live in Anderson so I could look it up. We just lost a very great researcher of the Keasler/Kesler/Keistler and other various spellings you will see on my website. Charles C. Miller, Jr. [bonedigger] was a very great researcher of these families but he died last week. Some of us have lots of his files though. Many of Abraham Keasler's siblings and descendants settled in Franklin Co. GA and are kin to many of my families there.
