Annette - regarding your comment of Black Dutch, Black Irish, German-Jew, what exactly are the Black Dutch and Black Irish? I've heard of this, but have never been able to determine exactly what it means. Reply (in part) from Elizabeth Whitaker: Here's a possibility -- go to http://www.wofford.edu, click on the link to the library, and then on the link to archives. The archives of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church are housed in the library building, and they have an online obituary index. Look for Hanies/Haynies/Haneys there, in the 1800s. (The denominational newspaper (Southern Christian Advocate) began publishing in 1837.) If you find any who look like good possibilities, e-mail the archivist (rpstone@wofford.edu) and ask for copies of the obituaries. -------- Thanks so very much Elizabeth for that information, I appreciate any & all ideas from everyone with a knowledge of SC & or OPD. Seeking family of Benjamin Franklin Hanie (3 March 1821 Pendleton District, SC - 9 January 1888 Hall Co., GA) a physician , he attended (in GA) the 1884 Methodist Conference, where he is listed as a Deacon (local preacher) with the Methodist Church - South Blessings To All Annette in Jackson Co., GA
You replied: One can search SC Archives by typing that in and selecting research. When you get to search screen you can type in last name of family searching and find archive records. You may have already done this. I did just find a John Hanie applying to practice medicine in 1850. Hope this helps some. I know about brick walls. Billie Sutton Smith Thanks for you ideas Billie, yes I have search for Hanie in any and ever place over the years! Even found a place/township with Hanie, Hessen-Kassel, Germany I have wrote years pass to elderly relatives (now departed) and a similar line always comes around: Black Dutch, Black Irish, German-Jew as being where did the family come from! Maybe I won't find out until the other side when I meet my ancestors...<smile> Thank you Annette in Jackson Co., Ga
Debbie, I've read and heard that these Black Dutch and Black Irish are classed as possible MELUNGEONS, mixed nationalities. The Melungeon group has a mailing list and lots of information. (I had three generations of direct descent who were Methodist clergy in SC.) I make sure to send info there that I know or assume (for good reason) that they don't have. This is also a good place to inquire about lay Methodist clergy who were or who may have been part of the S.C. Conference, which did cover parts of Georgia and NC at various times. Are there any Alabama Smiths in Jackson County included in this? I have one uncle who is pure male line from William C. Smith. That is as far back as we can find any records, so we are very intersted in Smith information. I am a Smith twice on my father's side (South Carolina and North Carolina) and once on my mother's side. Unfortunately I am a girl, so I can't participate in this. -----Original Message----- From: W. My great-great grandfather sworn in an affidavit in the 1880's that his name was Benjamin Franklin Hanie, born 3 March 1821 Pendleton District, South Carolina. That he came to Georgia as a boy and been here ever since. I first found him at age 16 in Gwinnett Co., GA, when he volunteered to fight in the FL-Indian War. He was still there when he married in 1839. to Elizabeth Margaret Martin (, born ca 1822 GA her parents unknown) The family still therein the 1840 census, no other Haney/Hainey/etc in that county appears to be his family. Later census after he left that county going into Forsyth, Pickens & Hall Co's Ga gives SC as a place of birth for his parents. He appears to have been able to read & write from those early times in Gwinnett Co., Ga as he used those skills to read the works of Dr Thomson receiving his 'Right' to practice his type of medicine (1842) no other license needed. He was a physician and a Methodist lay-preacher . The first names of his children (in order of birth) were: Sarah Adaline; William H.; John ,; Thomas Newton; Nancy Emaline; Elizabeth Margaret; Mary Amanda; James Minyard; Josephine L.; Samuel Tate' Olivine Sophronia & Benjamin F. Jr. I have search what I could on all the variable & surname families in the OPD area I have just about given up after 20+ years. I guess this family's beginnngs were of the unknow...but somehow I just have a feeling they were there in OPD......can anyone give me a way to go, PLEASE!! Thanks Annette
I have posted this transcription of an old letter I have to this list before. But since Smiths are being discussed, I will post it again. This letter was mailed from Cherokee County, Georgia, by William H. Smith, to his sister and brother in law, Squire Joseph and Elisabeth Smith Sanders. The address to S.J. Sanders South Carolina Pickens District Mortins Criak The letter Georgia, Cherokee County, April 2nd, 1853 Dear sister & brother, we received your letter, dated in February, which gave us satisfaction to hear you were all well. I was taken down the 16th of December last with the flu. I was down two weeks as I recovered from the flu, I taken (unreadable) rheumatism and it settled in my knees and ankles and wrists, and never walked a step in about two months. I am now able to walk a little. It has been nearly four months since I done any work, and I do not now when I will get able to work again, if ever I do. The rest of us are well as common. I received a letter from John. He stated he had got able to work again. I have not herd from Philip in some time. The counection is all well in this contry and doing tolerable well. Tell William Burns to write to me. You said in your letter that (unreadable) Brooks married Martha Burns. I never herd that his wife was dead. You stated that his three oldest daughters had joined the church. I could not tell whether they were Brooks or Burns daughters, from the way it stated in your letter. Mary Burns will write you a few lines in this letter. Write to us frequently. Nothing more at this time. But remember your affectionate brother till death. William H. Smith Dear brother and sister, I take this opportunity of writing you a few in this letter stating we are all well, hoping these lines will find you all well. I am enjoying better health than I have had in some time. We are living at John Smiths. This year I have nothing of much importance to write. I want to see all very much. I want to see them pretty babys of yourn y brag so much about. I do not expect that I ever will get to come see you all. I want you to come to see us if you can. So nothing more at present, but remember your affectionate sister till death. Meary Burns

I am looking for the parents and siblings of Louisa Smith born 1836 GA or possibly SC who married Barney S Turner born 1836 DeKalb Co GA. I would sure appreciate anyone with the Smith family to remember Louisa and let me know if they have anything on her. Female relatives to me are the hardest to find. Thank you! Mary
I am a member The OPGS and I request a look up for any info that is available on Henry C Barton who is my gggg grand father born in 1776 and went to Blount Co Alabama around 1815. Especially interested in his wife's last name the land deeds in Blount Co show her first name as rebecca and I think she may have been Cherokee Indian, any and all information on them will be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance for any effort given to this request. George Barton, Birmingham Al.
George, I don't have anything directly. But thought this might fill in a blank for Elizabeth Barton Hartgraves for you. I was recently working on Nipper Hood's children in Blount Co., AL and came across a death certificate for Reuben Virgil Hood. It shows his mother was Sarah E. Hartgraves. Elizabeth Hartgraves was with her daughter Sarah Hargraves (Mrs. Flemming Hood) in the 1860 Blount Co., AL census. This daughter Sarah doesn't show up in Elizabeth's home in 1850 with her other daughters because according to that census she and Flemming Hood were married ca. 1850. Richard, I am not too familiar with South Carolina. Can you tell me where Anderson City is located? Also Little Saluda Creek? I believe my relative Jesse Smith was living in Chester Dist, as a teenage boy when he was drafted for Rev War service. His father and family of origin were in North Carolina, so must assume Jesse had other relatives in South Carolina with whom he was living at the time. I'll check my book, Smith Wills, Deeds and Family Histories for your Captain Edward Smith. What time period was he there? Thank you for replying to my query and I hope to hear from you again soon. If any of these SMITHs have a mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother who was born in South Carolina as a WHITAKER in the 1890s, please pass them my name and e-mail address. I am trying to contact the descendants of my great-aunt, Travis, to exchange information and to ask about getting copies of some family photos. I am a granddaughter of Lorenzo Robert WHITAKER (1899-1961) = Virginia SNYDER (1908-1958). LRW was a son of the Rev. George Robert WHITAKER (1855/6-1935) = Julia Imogene HAL(L)FORD (1867-1909). George was the youngest son of David Lorenzo WHITAKER (1823-1906)=(1) Clarissa Pruitt/Pruet/Prevatte (1817-1893?). David was the youngest son of Hugh Hardy WHITAKER (ca. 1765-1849)=Polly Perry (dates unknown). Hugh and Polly came to the Upstate with her family in time for the 1800 census, and were early settlers of the Pendleton District. Clarissa is a big mystery: I've been looking for information on her since October 1984 and have only been able to conclude that she was born in Georgia, possibly in what is now Franklin county. See http://people.clemson.edu/~whitake for a look at some of the information I have on David, Clarissa, and their deceased descendents.
