    2. Hello, I am searching for any info on Lewis Walker who was born about 1796 in SC and was living in Gordon Co GA on the 1850 census. Wife was named Huldah and she was listed as born in SC also. Any help greatly appreciated. Mary

    1. CALDWELL,CARY,RUSK
    2. I am new to the list and am posting my research surnames: CALDWELL, David. I have an A.C. (probably Allen Cary) Caldwell who was born ca 1804-08 in Anderson, S.C.; therefore, Pendleton District. He was in St. Clair Co., AL in 1830; Talladega Co., AL in 1840; and Randolph Co. in 1850. Presumptive father was David Caldwell. There is a David Caldwell in the 1810 and 1820 Pendleton Dist., S.C., Censuses. There is also a John Cary living nearby in both Censuses. Do not know where this David Caldwell came from--perhaps from the large Caldwell clan in Laurens/Newberry? Relation, if any, to Cary clan. RUSK, James. There is a John Rusk in Pendleton Dist--presumed Old Stone Church mason. Have a plat which shows James Rusk in 1794 having land beside John Rusk. However, no James Rusk in Censuses. James Rusk goes to Walton Co., GA and then Jersey/Greene Co., IL by 1830. Trying to connect two Rusks. If anyone has Pendleton Dist. databases/books showing land, wills, court cases, etc. on these surnames would appreciate hearing from you. Cynthia in California

    3. I wish I could help you. For 12 years I published The Wood-Woods Family Magazine, but gave that up in 1982. I will look at the back issues to see if I have anything on them. My ancestor was Joseph Wood, whose son was Robert, my ancestor, who moved to North Georgia in 1830s. My mother's people were in Randolph Co., AL. They were Wills and Whitten and May. Do you have anything on them? ----- Original Message ----- From: <EVERETTLATTIMORE@aol.com> To: <SC-OLD-PENDLETON-DIST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 01, 2006 5:10 PM Subject: Re: [SC-OPD] Gr Gr Gr grandparents > Green Wood and Selah Pentecost near as I can tell raised the family in > Randolph Ala. > > I have heard many folks from here moved to that area of Alabama, > early > 1800's > > Regards > Barbara > > > ==== SC-OLD-PENDLETON-DIST Mailing List ==== > EDIT YOUR QUERIES > Remember to edit those replies. > Excess information takes up valuable web space. > > > > -- > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.8.0/353 - Release Date: 5/31/2006 > >

And for the other states mentioned above? 3. FYI, as appeared in our local paper: Dear Mr. Myers: While researching my ancestry, I found a reference that a distant relative of mine once owned a "zygocephalum" of land in the late 1700's. I have looked for a definition of this term in my dictionary, but can't find one. Can you help? ANSWER: In America's early days, settlers and farmers in many parts of the country had no surefire way to determine where their property ended and a neighbor's began, because a standard method to measure real estate hadn't yet been adopted. So, they resorted to a measuring system that had been used for centuries in the countryside of Merry Olde England - - the "zygocephalum," defined as the area of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day." This wasn't exactly the most accurate way to establish property rights, perhaps because some oxen moved faster than others (and some farmers worked harder than their neighbors). So, the zygocephalum eventually gave way to our current system of "metes and bounds," which uses a property's physical features to determine its boundaries.

    3. Hi Jeffie, Your best bet would be to find a Morman Church close to you. You can order original records through them. You will have to read them at their church library, but it is worth it to see the original records. 3. On Thu, 23 Mar 2006 13:16:09 -0500 (EST) Elizabeth, Thanks for the help, Conroe has a great library and will order the film for me. We had one on the Baptist church. Clayton Library Houston TX. is one of the best but no deeds. We have a Mormon Church here but I need to check for deeds.I had to send to the state archives for deeds in Rusk Co TX. That is the reason I was wondering where we could get them. So many Co deeds have never been micrifilmed. Ask the reference librarian at your public library if they can do this for you. (You would have to use the microfilm -- and keep it at -- the library.) This is more usual for things like microfilm of old newspapers. Ask your reference librarian if the library has an agreement whereby you can borrow microfilm from the Mormons (Family History Library in Salt Lake City): if not, ask if he or she knows where the closest Family History Center might be. What bigger place is Conroe near? Sometimes, you can get more genealogy services out of a nearby bigger public library system. I do this: I live in Pickens county, but I also have a card with the Greenville county library system and do most of my genealogy research in their collection. Elizabeth Whitaker
