This Thomas Wilson lived in the vicinity of present-day Williamston, and was a deacon at Big Creek Baptist church in 1805. The last citation I find for him in Pendleton Dist. was in 1806. Thomas Wilson was likely a member of the Golden Grove-Big Creek Wilson line, as evidenced by his proximity and by his witnessing of deeds (see below). --------------- Descendants of John Wilson, Esq. 1 John Wilson, Esq. 1740 - 1823 CH. Ann, Stewart, p. 33, Kilpatrick's Regt.- Oconee census p. 18 Household #21 00100-10100-02 With the following notation: Asa Kemp bought land on Little Beaverdam Creek of Tugaloo on 16 September 1799 from Samuel Barton. Edward Kemp was in the 1790 Pendleton census and Asa and Thomas in 1800. The names of Jonathan and DEMSEY appear in a 1799 deed but were not enumerated in the census. Stewart, p. 60 Kilpatrick Reg/t - Oconee census p. 30 Household #648 Thomas Kemp 10010-20100-00 with the following notation: Edward Kemp was in Pendleton in 1790 as were a number of the family in Greenville District, some of whom later went to Gwinnett Co. GA. Not found in the census, Jonathan Kemp sold 14 August 1799 to John Harris, land on Coneross Creek in this area, with Dimey (Dicey) Kemp as witness. Asa Kemp of the Pickens Co. area in 1800 bought of Samuel Barton on 16 Sept.1799 land on Little Beaverdam of Tugaloo. Pressly and James Kemp reached Walker Co. AL by 1833 and Calvin 1840. Stewart, p. 74 Kirkpatrick (Oconee) census p.35 under an entry for a Ezekial Harris, Stewart says A John Harris , prhaps the executor above, was livng in the Coneross Creek area in 1790 and he or another John bought land there from Jonathan Kemp. (editorial note by csholem: seems Stewart is repeating previously noted info.) Stewart, p.96 Moor's Reg'taq Anderson Co. census p. 40 under an entry for Drury Pruit household, Stewart says: Fields Pruit/Prewit was granted land on Cane Creek of Little River 2 June 1787 which he sold to Jonathan Kemp sold it to Harris . That's all for Kemps. Cordelia
Thanks Cordelia for your kind offer to do look-ups. Is there any mention of a Jepther Dempsey? That first name could also be spelled Jeptha. I am also researching the KEMP and LENDERY/LINDERY families. Thanks again, Ann
Ray, Here is what Stewart has on Durhams: Stewart, p. 4, page #2 of Brown's Reg't-Pickens Household #68 William Durham 20010-30010-00 And following that is : A number of Pendleton residents moved to Jackson Co. GA about 1800/1801. On 2 Decemer 1801,John R. Blackburn, who had done so, sold his land on the road from A. W. Copeland's farm to the George Creek Iron Works and the Meeting House, to William Copeland and WILLIAM DURHAM. William Copeland who is household #91 has the following notation under his name: Copeland bought of James Cunningham on 15 September 1794 land on Brushy Creek and in 1801 addtional land near WILLIAM DURHAM. Stewart, p. 21, census p. 11 same Reg't and county as above: Household #546 Charles Durham 20010-40010-00 Household#547 Daniel Durham 00100-10100-00 Stewart's index lists a Nathaniel Durham, but I find nothing on the page he says it is on. Howdy! Could you please check about any land transfers for Daniel Durham or any other DURHAM? Daniel's daughter, Elizabeth, married a Robert Stewart. I know that Daniel & wife, Gazelle, lived in Old Pendleton area all their married lives (1799--her death 1872). Thanks for your assistance. Ray George Bryan, TX
Could you please look and see if there are any land transfers for Wiley Bishop? I have been researching him for years and he seems to be a brick wall. Wiley is listed in 1800, 1810, and 1820 Pendleton Dist. census. I have found a deed where he bought land on Mountain Creek of the Savannah River. i assume this would be around present day Oconee Co. Any info appreciated!! Thanks! Patricia A. Cantrell Columbus, GA PACA1509@aol.com pacant1104@hotmail.com
Listers, I need help with Blacks and Snells. Stewart, p. 100 Moor's Reg't - Anderson census page 42 Household #121 Alexander Snell 00001 -01301-00 The Pendleton census for 1810 (which I do not have, but have read), shows: Two Alexander Snells and One A. Snell I have no proof that my gg. grandfather David A. Black's father was a Joseph Black. I had a distant cousin (DAR) who maintained that Joseph was the ggg grandfather. I only know that David A. Black had two sons (ten daughters; I have all of them, spouses, etc.). The sons were named Samuel Oliver Black and James Pressly Black. These names could have come from their mother's side; her father was Samuel Young and her grandfather was James Bonner. Today, in Easley, there is a David Snell. I do not know him and have no idea if he has any Snell genealogy. I wonder if any of you know of cemeteries in any/all of the three counties where Snells are buried. Snells from whom I descend were in Mecklenburg NC as early as 1783. Where they came from, I haven't been able to find. They did use the given name Alexander for sons. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Akexander Snell and his wife Martha ???? witnessed an early Pendleton deed, which I do not at the moment have at hand. Thanks. Cordelia
