    3. Donna, I was told that David Greer gave the land for Honea Path to be built on. And I also have a copy of Two article , one below and one from The Honea Path Milestones. He was Martha Cobb's Grandfather and Martha Cobb married my gggrandfather Elijah Andrew Pitts Sr. Donna ,I am with you.I sure would like to know for sure too.If I find out anything will let you know and if you fine anything ,please let me know.If you want what I have, just let me know. Shirley (Pitts) Bennett HISTORY NOTES ON DAVID GREER From a copy of a 1917 obituary from the Tugaloo Tribune for J. F. Greer, David's Greer grandson. "Mr. Greer was descended from the strong Scotch-Irish race, his grandfather (David Greer ) the first of the family now become native, arrived in 1789 and settled soon after in the place that is now Honea Path, South Carolina. He purchased between 600 and 700 acres of land there and lived to see his children and grandchildren in prosperous circumstances after the northern-southern war." "Mr. David Greer ... allowed the town of Honea Path to be built on his place. It was proposed to name the new town Greer, but David Greer believed the name of the old Indian, Chief Honea, who, with his retinue, passed through there often, making a path or an Indian trail, would best represent the growth and prosperity of the town. After David Greer should be dead, the historic path of Chief Honea would remain as a classic in the history of the Anderson County town. Mr. Greer lived to within a couple of months of being 100 years old." ----- Original Message ----- From: Donna <dbrand@itexas.net> To: <SC-OLD-PENDLETON-DIST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 09, 2000 9:51 PM Subject: [SC-OPD] Admin Staying > Well, the conversation has turned from me asking you guys not to leave, to > you guys asking me not to leave. > > I'm not going anywhere. 3. Well, the conversation has turned from me asking you guys not to leave, to you guys asking me not to leave. I'm not going anywhere. This list was my brain child and I've watched it grow into a great group of neighbors. The Old Pendleton District was where several of my ancestors came from. There is my great great grandmother, Mary Jane Spearman who was born on Brushy Creek, Old Pendleton District, S C. She married a man from there named John Moore. While I have information on her heritage way back to when her Spearman ancestors migrated from Virginia to South Carolina, I have yet to track down the heritage of John Moore's father and mother. All we know about John's parents was that his father was James M Moore born 1797 in S C, and his wife, Mary G was born 1812 S C, beyond this its like they came from nowhere and disappeared the same way. I sure would like to get a little further back on this line. Mary Jane Spearman's mother was Elizabeth Christina Slaton who was born 1805 in SC. Her parents were William Slaton born ca. 1770 while her mother was Sarah Honea. Thanks to a great cousin on this list we know the Slaton family way back to England. However, we still don't know the origins of one William Honea who, it has been said, may have had the town Honea Path named after him. We don't know that for sure about that either, but sure would like to find out. Further back on the Spearman line I have the Clardy family, and the Booth family, and the Oldham family. Most of these folks migrated to SC Old Pendleton District. So you see, I'm not going anywhere. This is where a large part of my heritage lies. Thanks, guys, for all your support. donna list admin

I know that every time someone posts a request for that special person that would fill in a blank spot in their genealogy tree, someone learns something of value. Families are built here.
