    2. Susan Johanson
    3. John Baylis Clarke, Sr. born c1791 in SC is my biggest brick wall. I would love to know who his parents were. A Jane Clarke was living with him in the Anderson SC 1850 census listed as being born in 1777. She was probably his mother or possibly stepmother. Both John and Jane state on the 1850 census that they were born in SC, but in the 1860 census, Jane states that she was born in NC. With each census, Jane got younger so she was probably born before 1777. John's wife Jennie Sammons was from Greenville Dist. John shows up in Anderson at least by the 1830s as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He bought his first lots in the town of Anderson in 1836 from Daniel Brown. J. B. Clarke, as he called himself, served on the Anderson Town Council from 1845 to 1855. He died in 1855, but I have not been able to find his obituary. His son J.B. Clarke, Jr, his son-in-law Jesse R. Smith, A. M. Holland, and E. F. Murrah signed his estate Bond. I don't know his connection to the last two men. John's son John Baylis Clarke, Jr. married Martha Nevitt, daughter of William Miles Nevitt and was a tailor in Anderson as was their son Elias Lake Clark who was my ggrandfather. These Clarkes in Anderson spelled their name with an "e" at the end. When my line moved to Union, SC, the "e" was dropped. Does anyone know of a Clarke/Clark in SC who had a wife named Jane who may have been born in NC?. If any of this sounds familiar to you , please contact me. I would welcome any clues!! 3. Ellen, I look under the listings by surname first in case of spelling differences. Click on the G and it will list all of the Grants. At this time James W. does not ring a bell. Do you have the dates for him? I could look around and see what I have. Is he buried in Pickens co. ? There was another family of Grants that were in the Northern part of Oconee when it was formed. (Asberry/Asbury) Grant and his wife Lucinda Carter. He is listed on the 1850 and 1860 census for Pickens and is buried in Oconee. Most of my Grants ended up on the Oconee co. side. Let me know and I will be glad to look around for you. Kristy

    3. Olive, I've often wondered -- but everyone and every piece of paper seems to say that my Elisha was born in NC 1805 and went directly in to GA marrying in Marion County (I think it was) to a Saleta Mauk. Guess few, if any, of our family lines went in to TN. I do have a cousin who has a line of McGehees whom he says is from Shadrack McGehee with only two daus listed. But I don't think even that group was in TN. Just our Smiths and Hopes and Mullinaxes knew to be in SC <G> Sorry! 1. [SC-OPD] Horton Cemetry
    2. Dianne Stancil Brown
    3. Thanks to K. Finley for directions to the Horton Family Cemetery in Belton, SC. I found the cemetery Wednesday and was very up-set at the condition. There was heavy under-growth, weeds, vines, fallen trees, sunken graves and the fence was partially down. There were only two "real" markers that I saw, the others were field Stones. But there may have been more markers for I realized that I was standing on one, while I was taking photos of my ancestor's (Edward Vandiver b.1748) tombstone. I cleaned it as best I could, and took a photo of it too. The Cemetery was located in a large parcel about 150' wide & 500' or more deep and there were houses on one side and a small sub-division on the other, So, someone, or the county must own the property. My ancestor's tombstone looks as if it was put there between the 1920's-1960's. My question is: what can be done about the neglect of this and other old cemeteries?

    3. Kristy, My name is Lee Campbell ( my maiden name was Smith) and I noticed in your e-mail, that you and I have several families in common. I have a Cox line, two Moore lines, and three, possibly four Smith lines. I also have Garrett, Heaton, Murphree, Morris, and many others. I think almost all of my ancestors were in South Carolina in 1830, 1840, and quite a few of them in 1850. My two direct lines of Smiths were in Texas in 1850. Hiram and Nancy (Wileman) Smith were in Titus co. Texas, and Luke and Rachel (?) Smith were in Polk Co., Texas. But my two Moore families (Alexander and Lucinda (Sumner????) Moore, and James M. and Mary G. (???) Moore) were still in Anderson Co., S.C. If you are interested, we will see if we can connect on any of these lines. Will share and exchange data. 1. Re: [SC-OPD] Roll Call - DEAN & JENKINS
    2. Anne, Thanks! I have the book. It is being revised and the new version may be out next year. I still need some sort of proof for the marriages of James Mattison Dean. I believe the first wife was Eliza Jenkins, the second Elizabeth Smith, and know the last to have been Sarah Smith. I'm reasonably certain he only had 3 wives. Records of the first 2 marriage elude me, however. Mike
