Do you know where these people were in the mid to late 1700s. It's very unlikely that they were in the OPD in the mid1700s: that area had almost no white settlement until after the Revolution as most, if not all, of it was Cherokee territory until after 1776. Large- scale settlement doesn't seem to have begun until gold was discovered in the area in the late 1700s. There were gold "rushes" here in the Southeast *long* *long* before Sutter found the stuff at his mill in California. You may have to look far and wide but when you find it, it could be a gold mine. 1 May 1855 Edith Stephens of Jackson Co AL applied for BLWt due from War of 1812. After reciting her deceased husband's military service "she further states that she was married to the said Daniel Stephens in the county of Penalton, South Carolina on or about the 10th day of January 1811 by Elnathan Davis a minister of the Gospel and that her name before her said marraige was Edith Murphey." I also found pages taken out of a family Bible for another family in his Rev. War pension file listing his marriage, wife's maiden name and marriages for several of his children. Can't get much better than that unless you find the church record or county register. Pat

Also, if that fails, you might check church records for the area....a few do exist back that far... ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, January 05, 2004 11:58 AM Subject: Re: [SC-OPD] Marriage records in Pendleton District Thanks for the book suggestions. Melissa: Don't know if there are any recorded "REEVES" or "REAVES" marriages. If so, I'd appreciate you letting me know. Can't find any info. I was able to purchase the surviving issues at the Caroliniana Library (University of South Carolina) Columbia on microfilm. I chose the diazo processed films which were very reasonable. I seem to remember they were about $12 a piece and it was a two roll set. Don't hold me to that as it was several years ago. Naturally, I have not gotten around to going through them in detail:( Here is their link. I don't know if you could order them or not but the staff was very friendly and accommodating when I was there. http://www.sc.edu/library/socar/ I don't think there is an actual transcription but I have seen excerpts in a book or two. There is a book, The Keowee Courier, by Colleen M. Elliott that is published by Southern Historical Press. The book costs $25. It focuses on marriage and death notices between 1849 and 1868 during the years the paper was published. Also, the South Caroliniana Library used to sell microfilms of the paper. A number of years ago I purchased the films through 1900 for about $60. Lauren H.
