Hello - just an FYI in response to Deborah Bryd's good suggestion for using the SCDAH online. The researcher can access the SCDAH web site at http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/ and click on Records Indexes to Key Series Available On-line. This will provide searches in about 4 or 5 databases online that include the Com Index. This is a MARVELOUS resource for South Carolina material !!! In addition to personal names, you may use the name of a creek, name of a surveyor, etc., to obtain information as well. Good luck ! Charlotte Tucker

To find marriage records pre 1800 in South Carolina, is a needle in a hay stack search. I have a list of a few sources Charleston Newspapers Renouciation of Dowers Wills/Probates all kept in Charleston until 1780 more or less Deeds Land Grants Church Records Private Diaries of people such as Isaac Haynes Diary South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine the South Carolina Historical Society will do a search of the Magazine's index for your surname, several volumes of indexs. The copy fee charge is around $.50 per page The South Carolina Archives will do a combined Index search for you by surname and you will have a list of all the locations in their records where your surname appears. It is called a Com Index. Very helpfull when researching early records. The search will be by exact spelling so if you have a surname such as Byrd, you'll need to request it in Byrd, Bird, Burd. Byrde, etc. Also One of the publishing companies either Genealogical Publishing or Southern Historical Press has published a series of books entitled South Caorlina Marriages. Many of the marriages are implied in various records. Deborah Byrd
