I overlooked this message the first time around. I'm so glad I didn't tonight! I'm trying to find the parents and birthplace of my 3rd great-grandfather, John White. In the 1880 census he gave his birthplace as North Carolina. My great-uncle says he was born in South Carolina and his family came from England via Charleston. I have never found anything to substantiate this. He married either a Jane or Anne Pendley. (The Pendleton District is my best guess.) He lived in Habersham and Hall Counties before settling in Pickens County, Georgia. Does anyone know the approximate year of birth for the John listed as the son of William G.W. White Sr and Mary Early? My John was born between 1810 and 1813. And I'm not convinced the birthplace is correct -- I've found many conflicting birthplaces in census records. This sounds like the R.E. Fortescue I am looking for, he and Emma (Massey) had a daughter in the 1920 SC census that was only 6-------so I am assuming they must have married when they were in there 40's-----I am almost positive this Emma that was married to R.E. Fortescue is Emma Massey born around 1869 -1870 and the daughter of Elias and Eunice Nix Massey-----in the 1920's census they were living next door to George and Mamie Rice, which , George would be Emma Massey's nephew , being he is the son on her sister Sally Massey who married Joesph Erza Rice, thank you Connie for that information, does anyone else have anything that they think might fit into this Emma Massey Fortescue story-------------with the information I have , I am going to make by hypothesis that Emma who married R.E. Fortescue is Emma Massey, the location is right for her and the ages, and in her brother's obit it states he had a sister Mrs. R.E. Fortescue---------------- would anyone else like to make an assumption about this Emma also I am still trying to postively find out who Elias Massey and Eunice Nix's parents were. Elain

Alabama has good early marriage records. I have done a lot of research in Alabama, but not on the Mayfield lines. Be careful that you look very closely when looking at Alabama marriages. The marriage which many researchers looked for between a Cynthia Morton and Marc Lacey is recorded as Cynthia Mountain and Mack Lackey. It took awhile and many supporting documents to figure that one out. Good Luck in your search. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, January 10, 2004 3:26 PM Subject: [SC-OPD] Marriage: Mayfields > Thanks for the advice. > For the record, Samuel Mayfield lived on his father's land in OPD until > 1825 when he migrated to Tuscaloosa MS where his brothers had settled. > Sarah may have married in MS but I have had no luck in finding the > record. > Her husband, Berryman McDaniel, family and neighbors moved to Saline,AR > territory in 1840 when the recession of 1835 bankrupted many farmers. > (Caused by Andrew Jackson's war with the Nat'l Bank) > So everyone moved regularly. Mildred, William Robertson dies in Tuscaloosa Co., AL abt 1863 and names a daughter, SARAH McDANIEL, as one of his heirs. SOURCE: Tuscaloosa Genealogical Society, PIONEERS OF TUSCALOOSA COUNTY ALABAMA PRIOR TO 1830, (Montgomery, Alabama, Herff Jones Division, 1981): 439. Hope this clue will help---- Charlotte Tuscaloosa, AL
I apologize to everyone. I meant ALABAMA, not Mississippi. David McDaniel is a son of Berryman McDaniel and my gg grandfather. My cousins and I are stuck with Berryman McDaniel (1788-185?) because he said he was raised in KY and we cannot find his family. Of couse that was pioneer land at that time. Another question is whether Sarah McDaniel was a Mayfield. There is a Mayfield-McDaniel Bible in Ar which suggests strongly that she was, BUT!!. I need the marriage certificate to settle this. In 1817 would they have married in Tuscaloosa Co? Mildred http://community.webtv.net/MLowrie/BERRYMANMCDANIEL
Hello Mildred, I am looking at a family group sheet for Archibald Mayfield [1794-1833] & wife Tabitha Bennett [1798-1842]. A brief family history follows this FGS. In the remarks is stated that Archibald moved with family to Tuscaloosa Alabama 1824/25. Also the compilers** states that Samuel Mayfield [apparently a Rev War soldier] followed his son to Tuscaloosa in 1825 and joined Sardis Baptist Church. Within the FGS is named a child of Archibald, Tabitha Ann who marries a David McDaniel in Tuscaloosa & dies in AR. The compilers are **John Ward of Texas; G. W. Drake of AL and J. V. Ernst of Texas; and B.S. Wilson of Texas. SOURCE: Tuscaloosa Genealogical Society, PIONEERS OF TUSCALOOSA COUNTY ALABAMA PRIOR TO 1830, (Montgomery, Alabama, Herff Jones Division, 1981): 145. Is this *your* Mayfield family? I hastily add I am NOT a Mayfield researcher - Charlotte Tucker. Tuscaloosa, AL
Mildred, Please excuse me for reading over your shoulder, but I learn a lot of things that way. I may be able to help you with Sarah's marriage, try looking in Alabama. I do not think there is a Tuscaloosa Mississippi, but there is one in Alabama. Tuscaloosa is the home of the University of Alabama, and it was a frequent target for those moving west from South Carolina in the early 1800 time frame. Also the spelling has changed over the years. Tuscaloosa is the correct spelling today, but in 1825 it may have been spelled Tuskaloosa. It is a Indian name and there were several early spellings. >Thanks for the advice. >For the record, Samuel Mayfield lived on his father's land in OPD until >1825 when he migrated to Tuscaloosa MS where his brothers had settled. >Sarah may have married in MS but I have had no luck in finding the >record. >Her husband, Berryman McDaniel, family and neighbors moved to Saline,AR >territory in 1840 when the recession of 1835 bankrupted many farmers. >(Caused by Andrew Jackson's war with the Nat'l Bank) >So everyone moved regularly. Hi Mildred, I'm also researching for my gr gr gr grandfather in the same area. Nicholas Briskey/Brisky and his wife Elizabeth Mark/Merck. And in my researching I had found that many families migrated around 1830's many to GA around Troup and Harris Counties, and then many on into Chambers County,AL. I have a copy of the Heritage of Chambers County,AL book by Heritage Publishing company and I looked in the index and found three pages of Mayfields. Which could be decendents of your line. I have found many for other families from the same area. And what is nice in this book also decendents who did the articles names and addresses are there. Mayfields are on pages 37,62,295. You can go to your local library and ask them to order a copy through the inner library loan dept. Other wise it's about a $50.00 book. Page 37 has to do with the Baptist church's and Presbyterian Church. page 62 has to do with the Alsobrook family which is probaby a marriage there. And page 295 are two families wheeler-hammock family and whitlow family. So probably marriages there too. Seemed like everyone had large families back then. Good luck Sandel [email protected] Seattle Surnames: Briskey,Brisky,brisque,Demastus,Sutton,Meadows,Hodnett,Moore,McIntosh,Leverett,Mark/Merck (States SC, GA, Chambers COunty,AL, Washington State, TX and france) willing to share and trade info
Thanks for the advice. For the record, Samuel Mayfield lived on his father's land in OPD until 1825 when he migrated to Tuscaloosa MS where his brothers had settled. Sarah may have married in MS but I have had no luck in finding the record. Her husband, Berryman McDaniel, family and neighbors moved to Saline,AR territory in 1840 when the recession of 1835 bankrupted many farmers. (Caused by Andrew Jackson's war with the Nat'l Bank) So everyone moved regularly. Some of the Mayfields stayed in MS while others moved. Thanks forthe info. The OPD web site has a file of many families including MARTIN (data submitted by users, etc.) Perhaps you could find help there. Sorry I dom;t have the address right now. Google it -john
Does anyone have a simple suggestion as to how I can find a Pendleton or Abbeville marriage record that shows where a Martin male married a Margaret somebody around 1812(+/-)? I believe this Margaret Martin was the widow with three (3) children in the 1820 Abbeville census. In the mid 1820s this widow and children were in Hall County, GA. Any help will be appreciated because I'm grasping for straws. Paul R. White [email protected]
