    3. I am wondering if I have a connection to your Major family through my 5th great-grandmother, Mary Major (1726 Brunswick County, Virginia -1789 Warren County, North Carolina). I don't know her parentage, but she married Joseph Duke in Bute (later Warren) County, North Carolina. Her son Major married Elizabeth Drury and moved to Union County, South Carolina. I don't know if this means anything concerning the Epps family connections (or lack thereof) you mentioned, but Mary Major Duke's eighth son was named Epps Duke. There was a William Major apparently in Wake Co., NC about this time. He was connected with the Brassfields that possibly were the ones from Cumberland Co., Va. There were a gob of Major families in old Caroline Co., Va just next door to Cumberland Co., VA. I haven't got into this yet but I have a deed transfer from a John Major 1805 to a Brassfield of Wake Co., NC. In the 1780-1800 time frame there were a bunch of Major families in this part of NC. Some went to TN and KY and others went to SC and GA. I'm still tracking John Major and Rebecca Chandler Major into SC. Old family history had this down pat, i.e., Gamewell Major and Patti Major Bostick. AS my David Hendricks Sr. m Sarah Major, her father John Major, named their first daughter Rebecca. Even the Francis Epps Association which has compiled and re-compiled Epps records finds no connections also. One problem there wasn't to many many Edward Major men at that time of Charles City Co., Va that could fit a William Major of our liking. However there were a great number of other Major families in SC and NC who could fit. I just don't have all of them run to ground. I have been concentrating of John Major. I have started sorting out John Major and Rebecca Chandler Major's children. The biggest puzzle to date is who is the <10 year old girl in John Major's household in the 1810 census of Newberry Co., SC? Epps Majors m Susannah Teague does not seem to fit either. He is most likely a son of one of the Majors of Fairfield Co., SC next door to Laurens Co., SC where Joshua Teague settled. Joshua Teague was not in NC during the time that John Major m Rebecca Chandler was there. He had been in SC some 10-12 years. If you will note carefully both Susannah Sloan and Epps always used the name Majors. More later. God Bless. Their daughter Mary Chandler Major m. ca 1818 Waymon Holland. Mary Chandler Major Holland supposedly had a sister Nancy who m. Henry Hendricks (1767-1835). On the 1830 Pickens District Census Wyman Holland is Family #999, and Henry Hendrix is Family #1002. Alice Hills Lexington, KY

    1. [SC-OPD] Susannah Majors and David Sloan
    2. Herbert Hendricks
    3. A little background. My name is Herbert D. Hendricks. I was born and raised near Pendleton, SC in the Lebanon community. I am a Hendricks by my father and related to the Smith family via my mother. My mother has a line of Hendricks in their lineage which are brothers to my Hendricks line. David Hendricks Sr. m Sarah Major is my first connection (father) and Henry Hendricks m Nancy Major (mother) my second connection.. Samuel Whittaker Smith m Martha Eliza Major daughter of John Perry Major son of John Major who first shows in formal records in Newberry Co., SC in 1800 census, my third connection. David Hendricks Jr. m Mary Ann Major daughter of John Perry major is my fourth connection.. I went to school at Lebanon and Pendleton and knew a lot of the Sloan people that are kin to David Sloan and Susanna Major/s. About 30 years ago I became more interested in my family history as my grandmother Annie Lizette Welborn Hendricks who was born and raised in Pickens Co., SC used to talk about all the Hendricks of Pickens. My grandfather John Franklin Smith (Lebanon and Pendleton) used to say we were kin to nearly everyone in Pickens and Anderson Co., SC. I was raised about 1/4 mile from both of the old home places of John Perry Major in the Lebanon community about 3 miles SE of Pendleton. I took a lot of the Smith history in "Smith Cousins Four" and began to search for connections in Virginia as I was a Physicist with NASA in Hampton, Virginia. I revisited SC and got Patty Major Bostick's old Major file as well as Annie Laura Kealser Moore. Also I found an old Anna Smith handwritten lienage of our Hendricks with Major connection. I also talked to a number of the Sloan family members still in Pendleton. Their opinion from their data that Susanna Major/s was not kin to John Major seemed to ring true. So I kept all this in mind when I began my search. Their information was that David was a RWS from NC and married Susannah in NC. Living only 60 miles from Richmond I compiled all the Major family data I could find. Nothing much showed on the SC connections to John Major and Martha Elizabeth Epps or a Susannah Major. I have a 550 kbit file in the archives on this research. However I did find one piece of information that needed more work. It was a James and John Major in Henry Co., Va in the 1778-1782 time frame. For about five years I was involved in building a new home and a new life in Lynchburg Virginia area. About a year ago I started up again. I met Anne Major Doggett in NC via the internet and talked about the James and John Major. She showed a connection to this particular John Major with the Chandler Family. In the meantime I was continuing my search for all the John Major I could find in PA, MD, VA, SC, NC, KY, TN and GA. I revisited the Chandler family files and found a note on John Major suing Robert Chandler for his wife's inheritance from her father's estate, Joel Chandler, in Wilkes Co., NC. I went to Henry Co., and Pittsylvania Co., VA courthouses as well as Wilkesboro , Wilkes Co., Courthouse in NC. Sure enough the connection was there. John Major, Rebecca Major Chandler and Robert Chandler. Upon receipt of the Joel Chandler estate file from NC Archives the connection was solidified. She was his daughter, left an inheritance and from Cumberland Co., VA., etc. However there was some more John Major/s in Wilkes Co., NC. Who were they and who did they belong to. Were there any connections to John Major and Rebecca. What about Susannah m David Sloan. This is from Wilkes, Co., NC Marriages. John Majors & Nancy Wright, 31 Oct. 1782; John Wilson, bondsman. (son of John Samuel Majors Sr.) David Sloan & Susanna Majors, 19 Jan. 1784; Isaac Preston, bondsman (More than probable daughter of John Samuel Majors Sr. and Rebecca Pollard from Maryland. Rebecca Pollard in herits monehy from her father in Maryland and there is a long list of records with this connection. I had eliminated this John Samuel Majors berore based on this data as bein John Major married Rebecca Chandler. Why is this Susannah Majors who married David Sloan? In the 1850 census of South Carolina Susannah Major says she is born in Maryland. If you search the Wilkes Co., NC records for this time frame there is no Thomas Major/s listed there. I understand that David and Susannah Sloan named one child Thomas Majors Sloan. I can't remember any connections when a first and middle name was used. A lot of people used the wife's maiden name as a middle name. I have never found an association of a Thomas Major with a Susannah any where. Some of this is rehash of above but I was lazy and just inserted a message I sent to Beverly Shuler. This shows a daughter of John Major and Rebecca Chandler Major could not have been the bride of David Sloan. A John Major m Rebecca Chandler from all I found out; Rebecca did not get married until after 1769. This from Robert Chandlers probate records for expenses for Rebecca. No charges were made against estate of her father, Joel Chandler died 1755, after 1769. Therefore any of John Major's girls could not have been more than about 13 at that time and certainly, even from frontier times, not old enough to marry. Incidentally this John Major came from Henry Co., VA when he left for Wilkes Co., NC. I can't find him in Henry Co., VA after 1782. He had a brother there also named James. All these records are there for the finding. Spent a couple of days in Pittsylvania and Henry Co,., VA Courthouses plus some more time at VA. Archives. This James did not go to SC like some of the KY Pearce family thinks. The James they have up there from SC is one of the sons of the James Major of Poor Irish Immigrant descendant (arrived 1767 and got land grant in old Belfast Township. This James had a brother John and William. From the land deeds and timing the John Majors of Fairfield Co., SC is more than likely brother to James of 1767 Poor Irish Immigrants. There was another brother named William ) This James and John Major m Rebecca Chandler are sons of James Major b 1720, died 1780 from wounds in Revolutionary War. James Branch Cabell when he wrote his book Majors and their Marriages did not have Bernard Major's will of 1777 (Charles City Co., VA.). If he did he would not have put the John m Rebecca as the John Major d 1810 in Charles City Co., VA. If you want to see how all this works out I'll send it to you. We're trying to make certain the John Major m Rebecca goes to Newberry Co., SC by 1800 Newberry Census. So far I have been able to account for the VA. John Major men and where they went. I've pretty much got all the John Major men of NC straight. Besides my David Hendricks Sr.(my mother's Hendricks family) m Sarah Major named his first child and daughter Rebecca when she was born in 1799. Now that is what Gamwell Major of Greenwood wrote long ago and is in Patti Major Bostick's files. John Major and daughter Sarah are mentioned in Newberry land grants. John Major is mentioned in 1801 as a bounder to Henry Hendricks Sr. brother David Sr. This Henry is my other Hendricks relative (my father's side) Now I'm just going to give you the jist of what I found. It seems highly probable. Now who is John Majors m Nancy Wright. The above John Majors m Nancy Wright is son of; John Samuel Majors Sr. m Rebecca Pollard from Maryland. His will of 1795 set the men children straight and mentions John Major m Nancy Wright. In reality John Samuel Majors Jr. m Nancy Wright is his correct name. I would suspect that Susannah Majors m David Sloane is the daughter of John Samuel Majors Sr. m Rebecca Pollard. See John Samuel Majors family history data. Research shows the above lineage back to Maryland origin as well as his father. This Majors family seemed well off. They owned six slaves in the 1790 census. A John Majors was a prominent man as her served on many Jurys in Wilkes Co., NC. Some times the name is spelled Majours in Wilkes. The first entry I found for this family was a NC state land grant. In reality John Samuel Majors Jr. m Nancy Wright is his correct name. I would suspect that Susannah Majors m David Sloane is the daughter of John Samuel Majors Sr. m Rebecca Pollard. There were other Major families in NC but this is a good bet as to location. Somewhere I have the county and regiment they John Samuel Major Sr. and David Sloan were in an early census. I have the records of John Samuel Majors Sr. of other researchers that show a daughter Susannah. No data on her marriage is available as they left NC before 1800. If you want the lineage data on John Samuel Majors Sr I have just let me know and I will e-mail it to you. I've got gobs of census and court records that support they were there (Maryland) and Wilkes Co., NC. HerbHendricks [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>
