    1. [SC-OPD] Re Naturalization Petition
    2. If you haven't read this article it will help you understand some places to look and how persistent you will need to be. http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/research_topics/naturalization _records.html I would check with SC State Archives first to try to locate the court jackets. If they don't have a clue and you have access to FHC do consider ordering all the films of court records that might cover the period of time. Since LDS doesn't always microfilm all records (and rarely microfilms the contents of the jackets) at a court house you may need to spend some time at the court house (or wherever all their historical court records and jackets are now held) or hire a local professional who is familiar with all the records and knows where those jackets are (if they now exist) and how they are filed. County and court clerks simply don't have the time to do this type of service for the public. If your contact with Nat. Archives was through Washington DC you might consider contacting the NARA branch at Atlanta for more input. I wish you success on this project. Pat

    1. RE: [SC-OPD] Mark Freeman
    2. Rebecca Bannister
    3. I have downloaded the application to join the Old Pendleton District Gen Society several times. I seven of my twelve main lines came through there -- but I keep putting it off. I would love to have the attachments you mentioned. Someone told me they ran installments a couple of years ago on my Baldwin line -- I can't keep putting off that membership -- there's no telling what I've missed. I couldn't agree more with you about that Alabama book! I'm so tired of hearing about that in response to every single post. She must be trying to sell it!!! I'm like you -- I want to pin down the earlier lines before I start worrying about where they ended up. To be honest, I can't remember my source on Polly Freeman Adams' being the daughter of Barney Freeman and Margaret McCollum. The database from the Old Pendleton Society website, maybe?? I'll look through my notes tomorrow -- now I'm really curious. It makes sense though, my 2nd great-grandfather's name was Barney Adams -- I assumed he was named for his grandfather Freeman. I can say for sure that Polly was Barney's mother -- I found that on his death certificate. (I am working on finding conclusive proof for everything I cite from sources on the internet -- I use it as a guide map, but not an absolute source. I don't have a lot of information on Jacob's descendants other than his son George Washington. I only connected the dots on this line a couple of months ago. I grew up hearing tales from my grandmother, mother and aunts about their Old Uncle George Freeman. (Sorry to digress a moment -- but the Freemans and Adams are part of my paternal lines.) Come to find out, Uncle George married my great-grandfather's sister, Necia Baldwin (from the OPD Baldwins I mentioned earlier.) They lived in the Conns Creek District of Cherokee County, Georgia. The Baldwins moved here about 1880 from Oconee County. Necia died in childbirth with their first child and Uncle George never remarried. He is buried at Conns Creek Baptist Church with the rest of his family. Jacob and his wife, Charity Price are buried there. I got their birth and death dates from their monuments. Jacob -- b. 1/16/1790 d. 3/10/1873 Charity -- b. 2/5/1810 d. 2/13/1904. I only have one of their children in my database so far -- George Washington Freeman. He was born 10/19/1829 in Habersham County. (A lot of the pioneers in this area spent time there. The settlers had left South Carolina headed for the Cherokee lands of North Central and North West Georgia. The lived in the counties close to the SC line while they waited for the Cherokee Removal to take place.) He died in September 1900. He married Savillia Jane Beardon on January 27, 1855. I have two of their children in my database. Uncle George who I mentioned earlier and Charity Freeman born 1860. She married Bud Beard. I don't know his real name. My grandmother, Mattie Baldwin grew up with their children. One of them, Mattie, married my grandmother's first cousin, Lee Sartor. The other daughter, Dicye, married my grandfather's (A.J. Fletcher -- Mattie Baldwin's husband) second cousin, Bob Purcell. (When I write this -- I get confused -- I apologize if it's too confusing!! We really aren't inbred around here!) Oh my Lord -- if Polly was Jacob's daughter instead of Barney -- I think I may be kin to myself!! Oh wait -- I already am anyway!! I almost forgot -- I live in Woodstock, Georgia -- about thirty minutes from the areas I've described. It's north metro Atlanta. I once interviewed for a job in Greenwood. I can't remember the name of the company -- but they made vitamins. Not Pfizer but a big drug company name like that. (I'm in marketing.) I want to get up your way someday soon. I have so many roots up there. Happy Hunting Rebecca Bannister [email protected] 770.926.8211 -----Original Message----- From: Wilma C. I know now they lived in the Old Pendleton district. And also trying to find out exactly where their homestead was. Elizabeth's father gave them a lot of acreage upon their marriage. It tells in his will. But doesn't say exactly land etc where. Just between his home and her sisters house. Far as I can go back is their marriage in 1789 in Charles town (Charleston). I keep hitting brick walls when it comes to finding he and his brother's military records in the American Revolution. Good luck on yours. I'm sure the Alabama are probaby decedents of freemans. 3. Thanks, Sandel, for the tip on Chambers Co., Al. I don't know of any of my Freemans that went there, but some of the distant cousins may have. Needham's sons Mark and Benton (mine) stayed in OPD and died there. It is through Mark that the Freeman cousin comes that had the DNA test. 3. Hello, Cousin Rebecca! Thanks for the info. My mother and father went into Ga. years ago, back in the 1950s, and found some of our relatives, but all those folks are probably dead by now. My mother is now 93 & 1/2. Do you know any male cousins that carry the name Freeman that would consider having the DNA test? If you are following along in this, you do have a cousin representing us. We just need some more representing the different sons. I will be in touch with you. Thanks for answering. 2. Hello, Did any go to chambers county,Al? In my copy of heritage of chambers county,Al by heritage publishing there are several pages of freemans (in marriages). I have found many decendents in this book for other families from SC area. Also GA. And are probably decendents. What is nice the articles each have name and address of contributor as contact for that family. We'll worth time. I would go to your local library and see if they can obtain a copy to look at through your inner library loan dept. Otherwise the book is expensive around 50.00 or so. Good luck Sandel [email protected] Seattle Surnames; Briskey,Brisky,Brisque,Demastus,Sutton,Meadows,Hodnett,Moore,McIntosh,Leverett,mark/merck (States SC, GA, Chambers County,AL, Washington State, TX and france) also looking for melton family chambers county as there are two baby graves from 1850's burried near where our family plantation once stood. Sad in underbrush would be nice to locate family

    2. Hello, I'm also researching SC area. For my gr gr gr grandfather Nicholas Briskey/Brisky and his wife Eliabeth Mark/Merck. Around 1789 or before. And in my researching I found that many of the families migrated together around 1830's. Many to parts of GA around troup and harris county. And then to chambers County,AL. I have found many decendents for those from SC area and GA for others. I looked in the index and freeman is on several pages evidentally with marriages into other families of the area. We'll worth a trip to your local library and ask if they can order you a copy to look at through your inner library loan dept. 3. My 3rd great-grandmother was Mary Pauline "Polly" Freeman, daughter of Barney Freeman and granddaughter of Needham Freeman. She married Pearson Adams and moved from OPD to White and Dawson Counties in Georgia and Rogers County, Oklahoma where she died in 1903 at the age of 86. Polly Freeman Adams' brother, Barney Freeman (Jr.?) married Pearson Adams' sister, Malinda Jane. They also moved to Georgia. Descendants of Needham's son Jacob settled in Cherokee County, Georgia and married into one of my maternal lines -- Baldwin -- which had also originated in the Old Pendleton District (the area of Pickens County which later became Oconee County). There was an older one here, getting land in 1773, along with a William and a Sarah Freeman. Needham Freeman, (s/o John who d. 1800 in Wake Co., NC) came to OPD just after 1800. He named one of his sons Mark and this Mark did not leave OPD.. I have been trying to find some SC kin before 1800 to John that died in Wake Co. and just thought that the earlier Mark might be kin. I can't find the father of this early Mark. Alsa/Alcey Freeman, brother to Needham, left OPD and is said to have gone to TN and possibly his brother Francis also wound up in TN.
